Chapter 2 - THE BLACKWATER VIDEO

Adrian did not question Grant in front of the family.
Not because Grant deserved privacy.
Because Adrian finally understood that every person on the terrace might become part of the evidence.
He called outside law enforcement.
That decision made Celeste furious.
“Adrian, this can be handled internally.”
He looked at his mother.
“That sentence has already cost me enough.”
She stopped.
Vanessa sat alone in the cabana under security watch.
Grant surrendered his phone but refused to speak until counsel arrived.
Lily remained with Adrian.
He asked whether she wanted to leave the resort.
“Yes.”
“Home?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“Not Grandma house.”
Celeste’s face changed.
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“Why?”
Lily whispered:
“Aunt Vanessa comes there.”
That was enough.
He booked a private suite in another property under police supervision and brought Lily with him.
No Voss security.
No company staff.
An outside detective named Mara Chen arrived before sunset.
She had worked corporate cyber cases but had no ties to Voss Holdings.
Adrian liked that immediately.
He gave her Elena’s letter.
The resort backup video.
His phone.
Access logs.
Everything.
Chen read the letter twice.
“What is Blackwater?”
“A retreat property.”
“Owned by you?”
“By Voss Holdings.”
“Who had access two years ago?”
“Family. Senior executives. Security.”
“Your wife?”
“Yes.”
“What was she doing there?”
Adrian opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
He did not know.
That realization hurt.
Elena had said she was going for a weekend alone.
Adrian had been angry.
They had fought.
He accused her of disappearing whenever company pressure rose.
She said:
“You call it pressure because you refuse to call it control.”
He remembered the words now.
At the time, he thought they were about his work schedule.
Maybe not.
Chen asked:
“Did Elena investigate the company?”
“Not officially.”
“What was her background?”
“Compliance law. Internal investigations.”
Chen looked at him.
“And you never wondered why she went to a company retreat property alone?”
Adrian looked away.
“I thought she needed space.”
Maybe he had wanted that explanation.
Chen requested Blackwater records.
Grant’s department controlled them.
Problem.
Adrian authorized an independent forensic image before anyone in company IT touched the system.
The archive showed something strange.
The week Elena visited, forty-seven minutes of camera footage were exported.
User:
GMERCER.
Grant.
File:
BW-ELENA-04.
Copied to an external drive at 11:42 p.m.
The night Elena died.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Elena left Blackwater at 8:10 p.m.
Her car went off the mountain road at 10:36.
Grant copied footage one hour later.
Why?
Grant finally spoke after counsel arrived.
“I was protecting you.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
Of course.
“What was on it?”
Grant looked at Chen.
Then Adrian.
“Elena meeting someone.”
“Who?”
“Victor Hale.”
Adrian frowned.
He knew the name.
Former Voss chief operating officer.
Fired seven years earlier after an expense scandal.
Adrian had trusted him once.
Then stopped.
Victor disappeared from business world.
“Why would Elena meet him?”
Grant said:
“She believed Victor had evidence against Vanessa.”
Vanessa.
Adrian stared.
“What kind?”
“Corporate diversion. Vendor kickbacks. Share manipulation.”
Adrian felt cold.
Vanessa served on the Voss charitable foundation board, not operations.
At least officially.
Grant continued.
“Elena believed she and I were involved in a proxy plan.”
“You and Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“To do what?”
“Take temporary voting control if you were declared unstable after Elena’s death.”
The room went silent.
Adrian stared at him.
“You’re saying my wife thought you were planning around her death.”
“I’m saying she found documents that made it look that way.”
“And were you?”
Grant did not answer.
Adrian stood.
Chen said:
“Sit.”
He looked at her.
No one told Adrian Voss to sit.
He sat.
Good.
Grant continued.
“There was a continuity plan.”
“Whose?”
“Your father created original framework.”
Adrian’s father, Samuel Voss, had died eight years earlier.
Always the dead fathers.
“What framework?”
If Adrian became impaired after spouse loss, emergency voting authority could shift to a three-person continuity board.
Grant.
Vanessa.
Corporate legal officer Nathan Pierce.
Adrian had signed trust updates years ago.
He vaguely remembered.
He had never imagined Elena’s death as trigger.
“Did Elena know?”
“She found it.”
“Did I?”
“You signed.”
That hurt.
Chen asked:
“Why did you copy the video?”
Grant stared at table.
“Elena told Victor she had evidence continuity plan had been modified.”
“Modified how?”
“To make your impairment easier to certify.”
“What counts?”
Public outburst.
Security misuse.
Threat against director.
Failure to attend board.
Substance misuse.
Child-custody conflict.
Adrian felt sick.
The resort incident.
Lily endangered.
Adrian arrives furious.
Family watches.
Security cameras preserve outburst.
A manufactured instability event.
He looked at Grant.
“You were doing it again.”
Grant shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why were you there?”
“Vanessa asked me to come.”
“Why?”
“She said Lily had become difficult since Elena died.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Chen asked:
“Who gave Vanessa Elena’s letter?”
Grant shook head.
“I don’t know.”
“You turned off camera.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa told me the man who brought it said cameras could not record.”
“Who was the man?”
“I only saw hand.”
Silver signet ring.
Adrian knew one person who wore that ring every day.
Nathan Pierce.
Corporate legal officer.
But too obvious.
Maybe.
Chen asked:
“Where is the copied Blackwater video?”
Grant looked at Adrian.
“I gave it to you.”
Adrian stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“The night Elena died. I put the drive in your home office safe.”
“I never saw it.”
“Then someone removed it.”
Who knew safe code?
Adrian.
Elena.
Grant.
Vanessa? No.
Nathan? Legal emergency access? Maybe.
His mother?
Possible.
Then Chen’s phone buzzed.
Independent forensic team found the Blackwater export mirrored in an offsite backup Grant did not know existed.
The video survived.
They watched.
Elena sat at a wooden table across from Victor Hale.
No audio initially.
Then backup switched to second microphone.
Victor said:
“Grant knows about the modification.”
Elena:
“Does Adrian?”
Victor:
“No.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Then Grant is not protecting him.”
Victor slid documents.
“The person who changed continuity language is not Vanessa.”
Elena looked up.
“Then who?”
Victor leaned forward.
“Someone Adrian trusts more.”
The camera angle shifted.
A shadow moved near the doorway.
Elena looked past Victor.
Her face changed.
She whispered one word.
“Grant?”
Grant watching in present went white.
Because on the video, he stepped into the room.
And Elena said:
“You followed me.”
Grant whispered now:
“I can explain.”
Adrian stared.
The video continued.
Grant sat.
He looked exhausted.
“Elena, you need to stop.”
“Why?”
“Because the person you’re looking for already knows you found the plan.”
Elena’s voice lowered.
“Who?”
Grant looked toward camera.
Then reached out.
The video cut.
Adrian stood.
“No.”
Grant looked at him.
“I didn’t delete it.”
“You copied it the night she died.”
“Yes.”
“Then tell me what happened after camera stopped.”
Grant’s eyes filled.
“Elena told me she was going to expose Nathan.”
Adrian stared.
Too easy.
Grant continued.
“And I told her Nathan was not the one she needed to fear.”
Adrian’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
NATHAN IS THE FALSE TRAIL.
Then:
ELENA KNEW THAT BEFORE SHE LEFT BLACKWATER.
A final message:
ASK ADRIAN WHY HE NEVER READ THE LETTER SHE LEFT IN HIS SAFE TWO DAYS BEFORE SHE DIED.
Adrian stopped breathing.
He had never seen any letter.
Which meant someone had been inside his safe long before the Blackwater drive disappeared.
The Blackwater footage created another problem.
Elena had not gone there secretly enough.
Her vehicle used Voss fuel card.
Her phone connected to property Wi-Fi.
A kitchen invoice showed dinner for two.
She had left a trail.
Adrian stared at the records.
“She wanted somebody to know she was there.”
Chen nodded.
“Or she wasn’t trying to hide.”
That embarrassed him.
He had assumed Elena’s investigation meant secrecy.
Maybe she had simply stopped telling him because she expected him to interfere.
Grant said Elena had asked him whether Blackwater cameras were independent from Voss headquarters.
“What did you tell her?”
“That local storage mirrored corporate security.”
“Did that make her leave?”
“No.”
“She stayed.”
“Yes.”
So Elena knew she might be recorded.
Maybe the meeting itself was bait.
Victor confirmed later:
“Elena wanted whoever was monitoring to know she had found me.”
Why?
To force reaction.
That sounded like Adrian too.
Push.
provoke.
expose.
Elena was not passive.
She played strategy.
And perhaps took risks.
Adrian had spent two years remembering her only as victim of a crash.
The files brought back the more difficult woman he loved:
stubborn.
analytical.
willing to challenge.
That mattered because idealizing dead people can become another way of not listening to who they actually were.
Then Chen asked Adrian:
“Did Elena ever have access to your safe?”
“Yes.”
“So the missing letter could have been removed by Elena too.”
Adrian stared.
He hated that possibility.
Why would she?
Maybe she changed mind.
Maybe replaced.
Maybe tested access.
No evidence.
Chen wrote:
Possibility, not conclusion.
Adrian began to understand investigation as discipline against his own imagination.
May you like
Every clue tried to become a story.
He had to stop it from becoming one too early.
