Chapter 2 - SEVEN SECONDS AGAIN

Keller refused to leave the observation booth.

Not because the door was locked.

Because he had begun remembering his own disassembly.

The memories arrived physically.

He clutched his chest and said he could feel fingers rotating his heart without touching his skin.

He screamed when Sana approached from his left because in the prior iteration one of his eyes had appeared near that wall.

Then he apologized.

Then he vomited.

Mara stood outside the booth and listened.

“I was conscious.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

He pressed both palms against the reinforced glass.

“I could see from my eyes while they were floating apart. Both eyes. Different angles.”

Mara swallowed.

Keller continued.

“My body was not opened. There was no wound. The thing treated inside and outside like an arrangement problem.”

The lights had returned, but only partially.

HORIZON-12 remained in isolation.

Every route beyond the laboratory looped back into another version of itself.

Ren tested six doors.

All returned to the lab.

One showed an empty room decades older.

Another showed the laboratory flooded.

A third showed their own team dead around the dimensional chamber.

Ren stopped trying after that.

Elias studied the sphere’s topological scar.

“Memory leakage increases after dimensional exposure.”

Mara looked at Keller.

“Why him?”

“He was the strongest intersection point in the prior branch.”

“So being torn apart made him a better antenna?”

Elias grimaced.

“That is an ugly way to say it.”

“Is it wrong?”

“No.”

Keller heard through the intercom.

“Wonderful.”

The sphere tapped again.

Three times.

Pause.

Three.

Pause.

One.

Mara moved closer.

“Morse?”

Elias shook his head.

“Maybe.”

The metal deformed.

A small section bulged outward.

Not opening.

Intersecting.

An eye appeared halfway through the sphere wall.

Huge compared with any human eye, but only a fragment.

The 4D entity.

Mara’s memory slammed into her.

An eye inside a wall.

Fingers through her chest.

FRAGILE.

Ren raised his pistol.

Mara shouted:

“Don’t!”

The eye rotated toward her.

Words appeared on every monitor.

YOU REMEMBER OUR DEATH.

Mara froze.

Elias whispered:

“It remembers too.”

The prior 5D entity had selected a reality where the 4D being was never born.

Yet here it was.

And it remembered nonexistence.

“How?”

The answer:

ERASURE LEAVES SHAPE.

Elias moved closer.

“What shape?”

ABSENCE.

Mara understood too quickly.

If a being should exist by one set of relations but is removed, the missing relation can persist like a hole.

A memory of absence.

The 4D entity had reconstructed itself from the geometry of what was missing.

Keller laughed weakly.

“So reality has scar tissue.”

YES.

Mara asked:

“What is the Observer?”

The eye trembled.

NOT OUR MAKER.

“What is it?”

SELECTOR ABOVE SELECTORS.

Elias said:

“The 5D entities were selectors.”

YES.

“They removed branches.”

YES.

“And the Observer removed them.”

YES.

Mara stepped closer.

“Why is humanity being tested?”

The eye rotated.

UNKNOWN.

“Then what do you know?”

The answer took several seconds.

YOU HAVE BEEN HERE MANY TIMES.

The monitor displayed images.

Not videos.

Geometric reconstructions.

Humans opening 4D windows in different centuries.

Different technologies.

Stone chambers around impossible polyhedra.

Biological computers.

Starships.

Subterranean machines.

A civilization on Mars.

A humanity with no Earth government.

Again and again, some version of intelligence reached beyond three dimensions.

Again and again, escalation followed.

4D contact.

5D discovery.

Observer.

Reset.

Mara stared.

“It isn’t repeating one laboratory.”

Elias whispered:

“It’s repeating a civilization-level attractor.”

No matter the history, humanity eventually looked up.

Ren said:

“So the mistake is curiosity.”

Mara rejected that instantly.

“No.”

The Observer had said discovering the 5D entities was the test.

Not the failure.

Something after discovery triggered termination.

The 4D entity wrote:

YOU ALWAYS TRY TO CONTROL THE WINDOW.

Mara’s throat tightened.

Elias looked at the dimensional reactor.

“In every iteration?”

YES.

“Why?”

FEAR.

Ren said:

“That’s not exactly surprising.”

The entity continued.

YOU DISCOVER HIGHER SPACE.

YOU ARE HARMED.

YOU BUILD DEFENSE.

DEFENSE BECOMES CONTAINMENT.

CONTAINMENT BECOMES EXTRACTION.

EXTRACTION BECOMES WEAPON.

Mara remembered the prior Elias activating the reactor to reach a higher dimension because the 4D being was dissecting them.

Can it get worse?

Yes.

Humanity answered vulnerability with escalation.

Maybe that was the attractor.

Ren crossed his arms.

“You expect us not to defend ourselves from something that pulled a man’s skeleton out of him?”

Keller answered before the entity.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

He stood inside the booth, shaking.

“If that thing enters me again, I want it stopped.”

The 4D eye focused on him.

Keller stared back.

“I remember you calling my pain an acceptable error.”

The screen:

CORRECT.

Keller’s face hardened.

“Then don’t ask for trust.”

The eye shifted.

WE DO NOT.

Mara almost respected that.

Almost.

Elias said:

“Can you avoid interacting with us physically?”

YES.

“Will you?”

Pause.

YES.

“Why?”

BECAUSE WE REMEMBER BEING ERASED.

Not empathy.

Experience.

Sometimes morality began with fear of reciprocal vulnerability.

Mara looked at Ren.

“No weapons unless it violates that agreement.”

Ren said:

“That is not your call.”

“It is my laboratory.”

“This is now station security.”

Keller shouted from the booth:

“It’s my body.”

Silence.

That settled more than rank.

Ren lowered the pistol.

“Fine.”

The eye partially withdrew from the sphere.

Mara asked:

“Can you get us out of the loop?”

NO.

“Why?”

THE LOOP IS NOT FOUR-DIMENSIONAL.

Elias looked up.

“Five?”

NO.

“Observer?”

YES.

The laboratory copy doors were not spatial tricks.

They were corrective pressure.

The test shaping circumstances to push them toward the old decision.

Mara stared at the dimensional reactor.

If they refused to activate it, the Observer might increase pressure until they did.

Like an experimenter escalating stimulus.

“What happens if we never open the fifth dimension?”

The screen:

UNKNOWN.

“Has anyone tried?”

YES.

“What happened?”

The eye showed another branch.

Humanity shut down dimensional research after first contact.

For three hundred years.

Then another civilization elsewhere in the galaxy opened a window.

Humanity encountered them later.

The chain resumed.

Reset.

Mara whispered:

“So it isn’t about us.”

The 4D entity:

THE TEST SUBJECT IS NOT HUMANITY.

Everyone went still.

Elias stepped closer.

“What is the subject?”

The monitors blacked out.

One line appeared.

INTELLIGENCE.

Mara felt the scale shift beneath her.

Not humanity iteration 44,902.

Intelligence iteration.

Species after species.

Civilization after civilization.

Any mind capable of looking beyond its own dimensional layer eventually entered the same trap.

Ren said:

“How many?”

The eye showed a number too large for the screen formatting.

Keller whispered:

“Jesus.”

The 4D entity continued.

MOST FAIL AT FEAR.

SOME FAIL AT POWER.

SOME FAIL AT WORSHIP.

Mara asked:

“And what counts as passing?”

The eye closed halfway.

NO RECORDED EXAMPLE.

Elias laughed.

“An experiment with no successful result.”

Mara looked at the reactor.

“No.”

“What?”

She turned.

“That means the Observer may not know the answer either.”

The station shook violently.

The exit door opened again.

This time the copied laboratory beyond contained Mara tied to a chair while military officers aimed dimensional instruments at a captured 4D intersection.

A future corrective path.

Weaponization.

The door slammed.

Another opened.

Elias stood before an altar of impossible geometry while thousands knelt behind him.

Worship.

Closed.

Another.

HORIZON abandoned and dark.

Earth burning far away.

Fear through refusal.

Closed.

The Observer was showing them known failure modes.

Or threatening them with them.

Keller whispered:

“It wants us to choose.”

Mara stared at the reactor.

Then at the 4D eye.

“No.”

Elias looked at her.

“What?”

“We don’t choose from its examples.”

The monitor flickered.

For the first time, the iteration label changed.

ITERATION 44,902

MODEL CONFIDENCE: 97.8%

Then:

97.1%

96.4%

The Observer’s prediction was falling.

Mara smiled without humor.

“Good.”

The station alarms screamed.

A new countdown appeared.

00:07.

Elias stared.

“We’re not activating anything.”

Mara knew.

The Observer was.

Before anyone agreed to trust the Fold’s promise of noninvasive contact, Ren demanded a demonstration.

“Not on a person.”

The eye in the sphere waited.

Ren placed a sealed ceramic cup inside an empty secondary chamber.

“Move this without entering the material.”

The 4D entity replied:

DISTINCTION UNCLEAR.

Ren’s jaw tightened.

Mara translated.

“He means: treat the cup’s boundary as meaningful even if it isn’t meaningful to you.”

The entity paused.

Then:

BOUNDARY BY REQUEST.

“Yes.”

The cup rose.

Not through the wall.

Not inside out.

The entity manipulated only the chamber’s surrounding geometry. The cup slid ten centimeters across the table as if the tabletop itself had shortened on one side and lengthened on the other.

Ren stared.

“No intersection.”

CORRECT.

“Do it again.”

The entity did.

Keller watched from behind glass.

His hands had stopped shaking.

Not completely.

Enough.

He said:

“Now ask before touching me.”

The eye rotated toward him.

REQUEST: MAY WE EXAMINE EXTERNAL SURFACE ONLY?

Keller went pale.

Everyone waited.

“No.”

The eye withdrew.

No complaint.

No punishment.

Nothing happened.

Keller started crying.

Mara understood why.

The most powerful thing the entity had done since arriving was accept no.

Elias recorded the exchange.

“This should be our first contact protocol.”

Ren said:

“It should have been our first contact protocol.”

Mara looked at the sphere.

“It still can be.”

The Observer’s model confidence dropped another fraction.

Not because peace had been achieved.

May you like

Because the old script expected fear to produce control faster than consent could produce boundaries.

The fifth-dimensional window opened by itself.
