Chapter 3 - VICTOR’S VERSION

Victor DeSantis surrendered his passport before anyone asked him to.
His lawyers announced it publicly.
Cooperation theater, Maya called it.
Maybe.
Still, he did not run.
Then he sat for an interview with prosecutors.
His version of Rafael’s death differed from Luca’s in one important way.
Victor admitted receiving Rafael’s discrepancy report.
He admitted telling Vincent Rallo:
“Keep him internal until we understand what he has.”
What did that mean?
Victor said:
convince Rafael not to send incomplete accusations to regulators until finance reviewed them.
Prosecutors asked whether “keep him internal” could be understood as physically stopping him.
Victor said:
“No.”
Could Rallo have understood it that way?
Victor hesitated.
“Yes.”
There.
Then the phone call after Rafael fell.
Rallo told him:
Duarte got hurt.
ambulance called.
files not recovered.
Victor claimed he ordered:
“Get him help and report it.”
Did he instruct cover-up?
“No.”
Then why emergency payment to Mason Pike’s vendor?
“Security incident retainer.”
Why same night?
Because Pike had been present and Victor wanted counsel? That makes no sense.
Records showed payment authorization labeled incident response, routed to Pike's company.
Victor said Rallo requested it.
He approved without detail.
Again:
not asking.
Then footage.
Did Victor know Rafael’s arrival footage existed?
He said no until later.
A month after death, Rallo sent him a report calling incident “off-site robbery following voluntary accounting meeting.”
Victor approved closure.
Was that false?
Yes, because Rafael was injured during the meeting.
Did Victor know?
He said Rallo told him injury happened after Rafael left.
But phone call timing undercut.
Maybe.
Then current ambush.
Victor denied completely.
He said Luca invented recruitment.
Then police produced messages from a burner? No need tactical. Forensic recovery from Luca's phone showed texts with a number linked through payment and location records to Victor's executive assistant? Better not too tech heavy.
A contact labeled V.D. had sent:
11 minutes.
basement entrance.
keep Tomaso upstairs.
car will take him.
No explicit Victor identity.
Payments:
Luca received $75,000 from a consulting company partly owned by Victor’s brother-in-law.
That was stronger.
Victor said payment was for legitimate security consulting.
Invoices:
risk assessment.
travel security.
Did work exist?
Minimal.
Then his executive assistant, Rachel Kim, testified Victor asked her to create the vendor file.
Did he say pay Luca?
“Yes.”
Why?
“Special project.”
What project?
She was not told.
Then company calendar showed Victor meeting Luca twice outside normal security process.
Evidence growing.
Still no verdict.
Then Enzo.
Board suspended Victor.
Independent COO appointed.
Tomaso also placed on administrative review.
Why Tomaso?
Because current security system failed under his watch.
He was loyal in hotel.
Still oversight failure.
Enzo hated it.
But agreed.
Good.
Then internal governance review.
The Marciano Group had one enormous weakness:
security reported through operations to Victor.
Travel reported through operations.
Vendor onboarding often through operations.
Emergency cash through operations.
Enzo received summaries.
Victor had become a single gate.
Why?
Because he had saved Enzo from a kidnapping attempt twelve years earlier? Could be too dramatic. Let's make he stabilized companies after Giuseppe died.
When Giuseppe Marciano died suddenly from stroke six years ago, Victor kept payroll moving, negotiated lenders, retained staff, and shielded Enzo from dozens of disputes.
He became indispensable.
Enzo rewarded that by giving more.
No conspiracy required to create vulnerability.
Then Amelia learned because Enzo’s company released governance report publicly under pressure.
She read only once.
Then her father's old discrepancy report.
Police allowed family copy after evidentiary processing.
Twenty-eight pages.
Rafael’s handwriting in margins.
He had identified:
four security vendors sharing addresses.
duplicate invoices.
cash advances with no receipts.
overtime charged for guards not on shift.
Total suspected unsupported charges:
$486,000.
Not tens of millions.
Enough to matter.
Then one note:
V.D. says this is how G.M. wants it.
G.M.
Giuseppe Marciano.
Enzo’s father.
Amelia’s stomach tightened.
Rafael had written:
Asked for written policy. None.
Then:
L. Ferretti says stop asking.
There.
Luca.
Then final page:
If no answer by Friday, external accountant.
He died Thursday night.
Timing.
Then Giuseppe.
Was Enzo’s father behind the fake vendors?
Maybe.
The records showed one vendor paid for legitimate off-books protective work? Let's nuance.
Forensic review years later found:
two vendors were legitimate but poorly documented.
one was related to Vincent Rallo’s cousin and inflated.
one was a shell used to fund confidential security informants and occasional illegal payments.
Giuseppe approved the confidential fund concept.
Did he know of fraud?
Unclear.
He liked informal systems.
Again:
family culture.
Then Amelia asked Maya:
“Does that mean Enzo’s father knew?”
“About some off-book security spending, probably. About duplicate billing and your father’s assault, not established.”
Specific.
Then a letter surfaced from Giuseppe to Victor two weeks after Rafael’s death.
Your Newark people made a simple review into a corpse and a police problem. I want no more improvisation.
Amelia stared.
Giuseppe knew after.
Did he report?
No.
He ordered internal cleanup.
That made him complicit in concealment after death, even if not initial assault.
Then another line:
Settle the Duarte family quietly if counsel can do it without reopening robbery.
Did they?
No.
Why?
Elena Duarte refused a vague “employee death benefit” because Rafael did not die at work according to official story.
Amelia remembered.
Her mother tore up an envelope.
There.
She had never understood.
Then Enzo learned same day.
His father had hidden truth from him.
He called no one except counsel.
Good.
Then he requested permission through Maya to meet Amelia.
She said no.
Not yet.
She needed father to remain father, not become bridge to Enzo’s feelings.
Then news leaked Giuseppe letter.
MARCANO PATRIARCH KNEW OF DUARTE DEATH COVER-UP.
The name misspelled? Let's use Marciano. Fine.
Amelia’s phone exploded.
She turned it off.
Hotel offered paid leave again.
She took one day.
Then went back.
Control over schedule mattered.
Then Luca requested restorative meeting through his lawyer.
Amelia said no.
No forgiveness obligation.
He sent a written statement instead, held by Maya unless Amelia wanted.
She did not read.
Not yet.
Then Mason Pike.
Located in Arizona under his own name, working industrial security.
Police arrested him on old charges related to Rafael assault and cover-up.
No fugitive mastermind.
A man who had gone on with life.
He admitted being present.
He claimed Rallo struck Rafael.
He blocked exit.
Luca moved wallet.
Pike drove Rafael’s car two blocks to confuse timeline.
Responsibility.
Then:
Did Victor order?
Pike never spoke to Victor.
Did Giuseppe?
No.
Rallo invoked “upstairs” constantly.
Ambiguity used as authority.
Then current ambush.
Pike had no role.
Good.
Not every old villain returns.
Then Amelia finally met Enzo.
Neutral office.
He looked furious.
Not at her.
At documents.
“My father knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew enough.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“He offered your mother money.”
“She refused.”
“I know.”
Enzo looked down.
“Do you want the company to make a new offer?”
Amelia thought.
Restitution.
Not personal hush money.
“Yes, through an independent claims process.”
He looked up.
That was not what he expected.
“I don’t want you deciding the number.”
“Agreed.”
“Other employees harmed by the same system should be able to apply.”
“Agreed.”
“And accepting should not require confidentiality.”
He paused.
Then:
“Agreed.”
Good.
Then he said:
“I spent years thinking my father was hard but orderly.”
Amelia looked.
“Hard men often call secrecy order.”
He almost smiled.
“You practice these lines?”
“I clean mirrors. We notice reflections.”
That time he laughed.
Then stopped.
“Victor says Luca is lying.”
“Maybe.”
“You still think so?”
“I think evidence should decide.”
Enzo nodded.
Then:
“And if Victor did this?”
“What?”
“If he tried to have me taken.”
Amelia knew what he was asking.
Not legal.
Personal.
“Then he betrayed you.”
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t make every year before fake.”
Enzo looked surprised.
“My father trusted Luca once. That doesn’t mean every biscotti he ate was a lie.”
Her voice broke on last word.
She hated it.
Enzo did not reach across table.
Good.
Then Amelia said:
“But trust can be real and still end when evidence changes.”
Enzo nodded slowly.
“That sounds worse than hatred.”
“Probably.”
Then Detective Morris called Maya while they were still there.
A new arrest warrant had been approved.
For Victor DeSantis.
Current conspiracy.
kidnapping-related charges.
fraud tied to security contracts.
Old Rafael case remained separate.
Victor’s lawyer arranged surrender.
No chase.
Enzo sat absolutely still.
The letter from Giuseppe also changed Enzo’s relationship with his sister Sofia.
She remembered their father differently.
To her, Giuseppe was the man who packed lunches badly, forgot school concerts, and paid every tuition bill before it was due.
When Enzo showed her the letter, she read it twice.
Then said:
“He did this.”
“Yes.”
“And he was still our father.”
“Yes.”
She sat down.
No need to choose between love and fact.
Then Sofia asked:
“Did you know he handled problems this way?”
“Not this one.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Enzo looked.
He had known Giuseppe paid people quietly, moved disputes away from courts, and rewarded silence.
He had called it old-school management.
Now the phrase sounded cowardly.
“Some.”
Sofia nodded.
“That’s what I thought.”
Then she refused to help with the company response.
“I’m his daughter. I’m not your ethics committee.”
Good.
May you like
Family role did not become governance because scandal hurt.
For the first time, Amelia saw the cost of betrayal on a man everyone else thought too dangerous to hurt.
