Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Elias Voss was alive.

That was the first truth.

The second was worse.

He had been held for eleven years by someone who wanted Adrien to believe he was dead.

Grace sat in the back seat while Adrien drove.

She had stopped crying.

That worried him more.

People cried when pain still had somewhere to go.

Grace had gone silent.

"You can ask me anything," Adrien said.

She looked out the window.

"Did my father know about me?"

"According to Helena, yes."

"Did he love my mother?"

"I don't know."

"Did he love me?"

Adrien tightened his hands around the steering wheel.

"I think he did."

"You think?"

"I don't want to lie to you."

She finally looked at him.

"Thank you."

The GPS led them to an old warehouse outside the city.

Victor had traced the location from a coded ledger.

Adrien entered first.

The building smelled of oil and dust.

They found Elias in a locked room beneath the floor.

He was older.

Thinner.

His hair had turned gray.

But his eyes were the same.

Adrien stopped.

For eleven years, he had imagined his brother's grave.

Now Elias stood in front of him.

"Adrien."

The name nearly broke him.

"You lied to me."

Elias closed his eyes.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

"You made me mourn you."

"I had no choice."

Adrien grabbed his collar.

Grace stepped between them.

"Stop."

Elias looked at her.

His face collapsed.

"Grace."

She stared.

"Do you know me?"

"I knew you before you were born."

She shook her head.

"You left."

"I was taken."

"You still left."

"I tried to come back."

"Why didn't you?"

Elias looked at Adrien.

"Because your uncle threatened to kill you if I escaped."

Adrien released him.

"My uncle?"

Elias nodded.

"He was the one who arranged Mother's death."

Adrien went still.

Grace covered her mouth.

Elias continued.

"Your mother discovered that the family business was being used to move money through charities. She threatened to expose it."

Adrien's voice was barely audible.

"So she was murdered."

"Yes."

"And everyone lied."

"Yes."

"Why did you protect them?"

"I didn't."

Elias looked at Grace.

"I protected you."

He reached into his coat and removed a photograph.

Grace took it.

It showed her mother holding a baby.

On the back was a note.

For the daughter I may never raise.

Grace pressed the photograph against her chest.

Adrien watched her.

Something changed inside him.

He had spent years believing power meant control.

But standing there, watching Grace discover the father she had never known, he understood how little control could matter.

Then gunfire erupted.

Victor shouted.

"DOWN!"

The warehouse windows shattered.

Men entered from both sides.

Adrien pulled Grace behind a concrete barrier.

Elias moved beside him.

For the first time in eleven years, the brothers stood shoulder to shoulder.

"Still fast?" Adrien asked.

Elias smiled faintly.

"Still arrogant?"

"More than ever."

They fought their way toward the exit.

Grace stayed behind cover until Victor reached her.

"Move."

They ran.

Outside, rain had started.

Elias stopped.

"There."

A black car disappeared around the corner.

Adrien recognized it.

His uncle's driver.

He turned to Victor.

"Find him."

Victor nodded.

Adrien looked at Grace.

She was shaking.

He approached.

She looked up.

"I don't know what happens now."

Adrien took her hand.

"Neither do I."

She squeezed his fingers.

"That's the first honest thing you've said all night."

He looked at her.

Then Elias spoke from behind them.

"Adrien."

Adrien turned.

Elias held up another photograph.

"This is the person who ordered everything."

Adrien took it.

His face went blank.

The photograph showed a woman standing beside their mother.

Adrien whispered her name.

"Margaret Bennett."

Grace stared.

"My mother?"

Elias nodded.

"Your mother wasn't only a victim."

"She was involved."

Elias stayed with them for three days.

The first morning was awkward.

Adrien and Elias had eleven years of silence between them.

Grace found them in the kitchen staring at the same coffee machine.

"You two need to talk."

Elias sighed.

"Your brother has always been difficult."

Adrien looked at him.

"You disappeared."

"I was kidnapped."

"You could have sent a message."

"I did."

"Never received it."

"Because our uncle intercepted it."

Adrien looked away.

Grace poured coffee.

"You're both terrible at communicating."

Elias laughed.

Adrien didn't.

But eventually, he did.

A small sound.

Almost reluctant.

Grace smiled.

The brothers began reconstructing the past.

Every missing year.

Every false report.

Every account.

Every person who had benefited from the lie.

The picture became clear.

Adrien's uncle had created a parallel criminal network.

He had used Adrien's reputation as cover.

Anyone who questioned the operation believed Adrien had ordered it.

That meant Adrien had been fighting enemies created by someone who claimed to be his ally.

Grace looked at the documents.

"So your reputation protected him."

"Yes."

"And you never knew."

"No."

"That must hurt."

Adrien nodded.

"It does."

Elias looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

Adrien's eyes met his.

"For what?"

"For letting you carry it alone."

Silence.

Adrien finally said, "I thought you were dead."

"I know."

"I hated you."

"I know."

"I missed you."

Elias looked away.

"That I didn't know."

Grace watched them.

Some wounds did not close quickly.

But sometimes they stopped bleeding.

That afternoon, Ethan returned.

He hugged his uncle first.

Then stared at him.

"You really are alive."

Elias smiled.

"Apparently."

Ethan looked at Adrien.

"You knew?"

"Not until recently."

Ethan shook his head.

"My family is insane."

Grace laughed.

"Welcome."

Ethan looked at her.

"You fit in."

Adrien rolled his eyes.

That evening, they ate dinner together.

It was the first time Adrien's table had felt like a family table.

Then the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

A message appeared on the television.

YOU HAVE THREE HOURS.

BENEATH THE RESTAURANT.

COME ALONE.

Adrien stared.

Grace looked at him.

"No."

He shook his head.

"You stay here."

She stood.

"Not this time."

"Grace."

"You promised you wouldn't control me."

He stopped.

She was right.

Adrien looked at Elias.

Elias nodded.

"She's coming."

Adrien sighed.

"Fine."

Grace smiled.

"Thank you."

He looked at her.

"I didn't say I liked it."

"I know."

Elias stayed with them for three days.

They ate dinner together.

It was the first time Adrien's table had felt like a family table.

Not a perfect family.

Not an easy one.

But a real one.

Then the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

A message appeared on the television.

YOU HAVE THREE HOURS.

BENEATH THE RESTAURANT.

COME ALONE.

Elias looked at Grace for a long time.

"You have your father's eyes."

She smiled sadly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true."

Adrien stood beside them.

"What happens now?"

Elias looked at his brother.

"Now we stop running."

Grace nodded.

The three of them stood in the quiet room.

A family created by secrets.

Broken by lies.

Held together by a woman who had walked into a restaurant because she was hungry.

Adrien looked at Grace.

"I never thought I'd have this."

"What?"

"A reason to believe tomorrow could be different."

She squeezed his hand.

May you like

"Then believe it."

For once, he did.
