Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN HE FAILED TO PROTECT

The next morning, Claire woke to a strange feeling.
Peace.
It wasn't complete peace. Her heart still fluttered unpredictably, and she still felt the exhaustion that had followed her for months.
But nobody was criticizing her.
Nobody was measuring the breakfast on her plate.
Nobody was asking why her dress looked tighter.
Nobody was telling her that being tired was an excuse.
Maya placed a bowl of oatmeal on the table.
"Eat."
Claire smiled faintly.
"You sound like my doctor."
"Your doctor doesn't have to live with you."
Claire laughed.
It was the first real laugh she had managed in days.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She ignored it.
It rang again.
Maya glanced at the screen.
"Want me to answer?"
"No."
The call stopped.
A message appeared.
You don't know what your husband is capable of. Don't trust him.
Claire stared at it.
A second message arrived.
Your father-in-law is not the only person watching you.
Her hands went cold.
Maya saw her expression.
"What?"
Claire handed over the phone.
Maya read the messages.
"Dominic?"
"No."
"Then who?"
"I don't know."
Across the city, Dominic was asking the same question.
He stood in a private conference room with Marco and two trusted investigators.
On the table lay copies of the foundation records.
"Three shell companies," Marco said. "All connected to Salvatore."
"How much?"
"Approximately eighteen million over two years."
Dominic stared at the numbers.
"Where did it go?"
"Some of it disappeared through legitimate investments. Some was moved overseas."
"Why?"
"We don't know."
Dominic looked at another document.
Claire's name appeared on several internal reports.
"She was close to discovering it."
"Yes."
"Did my father know?"
"We believe so."
Dominic leaned back.
"Then why didn't he stop her?"
Marco hesitated.
"Maybe he thought you would."
Dominic's eyes hardened.
The possibility was unbearable.
He had been the weapon his father never had to lift himself.
All Salvatore needed to do was whisper that Claire was becoming difficult.
Dominic had done the rest.
He had turned criticism into cruelty.
He had mistaken obedience for loyalty.
His phone rang.
His father.
Dominic answered.
"What?"
"You missed breakfast."
"I wasn't invited."
A pause.
"Your tone has changed."
"Maybe my understanding has."
Salvatore chuckled.
"Your wife has been filling your head with nonsense."
"How long have you been moving foundation money?"
Silence.
It lasted only two seconds.
But Dominic heard everything in those two seconds.
"Where did you hear that?"
"Answer me."
"You've always been too trusting."
Dominic's voice dropped.
"Of you?"
"Of women."
The call ended.
Dominic stared at the screen.
Marco said quietly, "That's not a denial."
"No."
Dominic picked up his coat.
"Where are you going?"
"To Claire."
"You just saw her."
"I'm going again."
At Maya's apartment, Claire was getting ready for her appointment when someone knocked.
She froze.
Maya looked through the peephole.
"Dominic."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Tell him I'm not here."
Maya opened the door only a few inches.
Dominic stood outside without security.
"I'm not here to argue."
"Then why are you here?"
"I need to warn her."
Maya studied him.
"About what?"
"Your building has been watched since yesterday."
Maya's face changed.
Dominic continued.
"I moved security to the block. They will stay out of sight."
"I don't want your men following us."
"They aren't following you. They're watching the people watching you."
Maya opened the door.
Claire appeared behind her.
"Dominic."
He looked at her.
She was wearing a dark coat and carrying her medical folder.
For one second, he forgot every prepared sentence.
Then he said, "We need to talk about your father-in-law."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
"What do you know?"
"He wanted me to sign documents."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Good."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because I believe you."
Claire's expression softened for a fraction.
Then her phone rang.
The same unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice said, "If you take that appointment, your husband won't be the only person waiting outside."
The line went dead.
Claire's face drained of color.
Dominic took one step toward her.
"Who was it?"
"I don't know."
"Give me the phone."
"No."
"Claire."
"You promised."
He stopped.
She was right.
He had promised to listen.
So he listened.
She told him everything.
The messages.
The warning.
The fear she had tried to hide.
When she finished, Dominic said, "You're going to the appointment."
"That's what they don't want."
"Exactly."
He called Marco.
"We're changing the route."
Maya frowned.
"What route?"
Dominic looked at Claire.
"We're going through the hospital's public entrance."
"That's exposed."
"That's the point."
Claire stared at him.
"You want whoever is watching us to see where we go?"
"I want them to think they know."
Marco understood immediately.
He nodded.
"Fake vehicle?"
"Yes."
Maya crossed her arms.
"You're dragging us into your world."
Dominic looked at her.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"My world came looking for Claire."
At the hospital, the appointment went smoothly.
The doctor listened to Claire's heart, reviewed her tests, and smiled reassuringly.
"The baby is developing normally."
Claire exhaled.
Dominic stood near the window, listening.
The doctor looked at him.
"You must be the father."
Dominic nodded.
"I am."
"Then your job is simple. Help her rest."
Dominic almost smiled.
"I can do that."
Claire looked at him.
She wasn't sure he could.
But for the first time, he seemed determined to learn.
After the appointment, they stepped outside.
A black sedan sat across the street.
Marco noticed it.
"So did I," Dominic said.
The vehicle pulled away.
Marco's phone rang.
He answered, listened, then looked at Dominic.
"What?"
"One of the men we were watching just called Salvatore."
Dominic's face became unreadable.
Claire touched her stomach.
"Does he know about the baby?"
Dominic looked at her.
"I don't know."
Then a second vehicle turned the corner.
This one stopped directly in front of them.
The rear door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was elegant, middle-aged, and smiling.
Claire recognized her immediately.
Dominic's aunt.
Lucia Castellano.
She walked toward them carrying a small white envelope.
"Claire," she said softly.
Then she looked at Dominic.
"Your father has made a terrible mistake."
She handed Claire the envelope.
"Inside is the reason he wants you gone."
Dominic opened it.
One photograph fell onto the pavement.
It showed Salvatore meeting someone Claire had never seen.
Behind them stood a bank employee holding a file.
Lucia whispered, "Your father didn't steal eighteen million."
Dominic looked at her.
"He stole much more."
Dominic looked at the photograph again.
"Who is the man?"
Lucia shook her head.
"Someone your father has feared for years."
"Name."
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No. I was never allowed to know."
Claire unfolded the rest of the papers.
There was a list of transfers.
Dates.
Amounts.
Signatures.
At the bottom of one page was Dominic's name.
He stared.
"I never signed this."
Lucia nodded.
"Exactly."
Claire looked at him.
"Someone forged your signature."
Dominic felt something cold settle in his chest.
"If these documents become public, the foundation collapses."
"And your father's position with it," Lucia said.
"Why tell me now?"
Lucia's eyes moved to Claire.
"Because I watched him destroy every person who questioned him."
She paused.
"I won't watch him destroy you."
A horn sounded behind them.
Marco immediately stepped forward.
"Inside."
Dominic took Claire's arm gently.
She looked at his hand.
He released her at once.
"Sorry."
She nodded.
They entered the hospital again.
For the next hour, they sat in a private consultation room while Marco arranged safe transportation.
Claire read every page.
Dominic watched her.
"You were doing this alone?"
"For months."
"Why?"
"Because every time I tried to bring something to you, your father was already there."
Dominic closed his eyes.
He remembered dinner.
His father speaking.
Claire going silent.
He had thought she was being oversensitive.
Now he understood.
She had been surrounded.
And he had stood on the wrong side.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Claire didn't answer.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me."
"Good."
"I'm asking you to let me fix what I can."
She finally looked at him.
"Can you fix the last four years?"
"No."
"Can you make me forget what you said?"
"No."
"Then don't promise to fix everything."
Dominic nodded.
"What can I do?"
"Protect the baby."
His expression softened.
"And you."
Claire hesitated.
"Protect me without controlling me."
"I'll try."
"No."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Don't try. Learn."
For a long moment, Dominic said nothing.
Then he nodded.
"I will."
That evening, he returned to the mansion alone.
Salvatore was waiting in the library.
"You brought her back?"
"No."
"Good."
Dominic closed the doors.
"You're going to tell me everything."
His father smiled.
"Or what?"
Dominic placed the forged signature on the desk.
Salvatore's smile disappeared.
"Where did you get that?"
"From your sister."
The room became silent.
Dominic stepped closer.
"You used my name."
"I used what was necessary."
"You used my wife."
Salvatore's expression hardened.
"She was a weakness."
Dominic looked at him for several seconds.
Then he said the sentence that changed the family forever.
"She was the only honest person in this house."
May you like
He walked out.
Behind him, Salvatore finally understood that the son he had trained to obey had become the man he could no longer control.
