Chapter 7 - THE PLAN TO ERASE SOFIA RINALDI

Dante did not shout.
That was how Elena learned his anger had levels.
The loud version was frightening.
The quiet version changed the air pressure in a room.
“What do you mean disappear?”
Maria sat at the kitchen table wrapped in a blanket.
“I mean new identity. New city. No Rinaldi name.”
Dante stared at her.
“My wife planned to take my daughter from me.”
“No.”
“That is exactly what you said.”
“She planned to hide Sofia if Vittorio discovered Alessandra was investigating him.”
“Without telling me.”
“She thought you might be watched.”
“I was her husband.”
Maria’s tired eyes sharpened.
“And Vittorio was your father.”
Dante went still.
Maria continued.
“You loved them both. Alessandra did not know which loyalty would win until she had proof.”
Pain flashed across his face.
“You think I would choose him over Sofia?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because she was afraid you would confront him too soon.”
Gabriel muttered, “She was right about that.”
Dante gave him a look that could have stopped traffic.
Gabriel raised both hands.
Maria leaned forward.
“Dante, Project Stella was never meant to be used unless Alessandra died and Vittorio remained active.”
“Both happened.”
“Yes.”
“And five million was transferred tonight.”
Maria looked at the ledger.
“Then someone activated it.”
Elena’s skin prickled.
“Who can?”
“Alessandra. Me. Gabriel.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Not me.”
Maria looked at him.
“Then either someone stole our access…”
Dante finished.
“Or Alessandra activated it before she died.”
Sal typed rapidly.
“Transfer instruction was scheduled.”
Everyone turned.
“When?” Dante asked.
“Eighteen months ago.”
The day of the explosion.
A dead woman had set a clock.
It had finally reached zero.
Sal continued.
“Execution trigger required a second condition.”
“What condition?”
“I’m trying to see.”
Elena thought of the past hours.
The lullaby.
Maria kidnapped.
Vittorio appearing.
Sofia targeted.
“Could it be connected to the ledger?”
Sal shook his head.
“Maybe.”
Dante looked toward the hallway.
“I am moving Sofia.”
Maria stood too quickly.
“No.”
He turned.
“What?”
“Not until we know where the plan sends her.”
“I am not following a dead woman’s instructions to erase my child.”
“Dante—”
“No.”
Sofia’s voice came from the hall.
“Daddy?”
Everyone stopped.
She stood barefoot in pink pajamas.
Bunny tucked beneath one arm.
Her eyes moved across the adults.
“Why are you mad?”
Dante changed instantly.
He crouched.
“I’m not mad at you.”
“You sound mad.”
“I know.”
She walked to him.
He picked her up.
Sofia rested her head against his shoulder.
Then saw Maria.
“Who’s that?”
Elena smiled.
“My mom.”
Sofia studied Maria seriously.
“Does she sing?”
Maria’s eyes filled.
“Sometimes.”
“Sing the star song.”
Maria looked at Dante.
Then Elena.
She hummed the first four notes.
Sofia smiled.
“Same.”
The child reached toward her.
Maria took her hand.
Something about three generations connected by one lullaby silenced the room.
Then Sofia said, “Mommy had a star box.”
Dante froze.
“What?”
“A star box.”
“Where?”
“My room.”
Dante stared.
“At home?”
Sofia nodded.
“Mommy said it was for when the song came back.”
Every adult went still.
Elena crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, do you remember where?”
Sofia thought.
“Under the castle.”
Dante was already reaching for his phone.
The Rinaldi home sat on three acres in Brookline behind gates that looked decorative until armed men appeared behind them.
Elena had never seen a private home that large.
Sofia’s bedroom was on the second floor.
The “castle” was a wooden dollhouse nearly as tall as the child.
Dante moved it aside.
Nothing.
Sofia frowned.
“Under.”
Elena looked at the rug.
They rolled it back.
A loose floorboard.
Sal pried it up.
Inside was a silver box engraved with a star.
Dante sat back on his heels.
“Alessandra.”
The box had a fingerprint lock.
Sofia touched it.
Click.
Dante’s face changed again.
Inside were two passports.
One for Sofia under another name.
One for Alessandra.
Cash.
A small key.
And a tablet.
The tablet powered on automatically.
A video appeared.
Alessandra.
Alive.
Healthy.
Recorded before the explosion.
Sofia gasped.
“Mommy!”
Dante sat absolutely still.
Alessandra smiled at the camera.
“If you are watching this, Stella has been activated.”
Sofia reached toward the screen.
Dante pulled her onto his lap.
Alessandra continued.
“Dante, I know you are angry.”
Elena almost laughed through the ache in her chest.
The dead woman knew him well.
“You should be. I made decisions for you because I was afraid you would make the brave decision instead of the safe one.”
Dante looked down.
“I am sorry.”
The video shifted.
“Project Stella does not take Sofia from you.”
Dante looked up.
“It takes both of you away.”
Maria exhaled.
Alessandra explained.
The passports were temporary identities.
The money funded a secure relocation.
A private property in Maine.
Only three people knew it existed.
Gabriel.
Maria.
And Lucia.
“If Vittorio is alive, Boston is not safe for either of you.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
Then Alessandra’s face softened.
“And if Maria’s daughter Elena is with you when this plays, listen to her.”
Elena stared.
Again her name.
Dante slowly looked over.
Alessandra smiled faintly.
“She has no reason to preserve the Rinaldi name. That may make her the only person in the room who can see clearly.”
Sal coughed into his fist.
Dante ignored him.
The video continued.
“Go to Maine. Take the black ledger. At the house is the original evidence against Vittorio.”
Dante leaned closer.
“And one more thing.”
Alessandra’s smile vanished.
“If the scheduled transfer executed, someone accessed the Rinaldi foundation using my old credentials.”
Sal went pale.
“That person is inside your house.”
Everyone looked around.
A cold feeling moved through Elena.
Alessandra said, “Do not trust security. Do not trust staff. Do not trust anyone who knew about my investigation.”
Dante’s eyes went to Sal.
Sal’s jaw tightened.
Then the downstairs alarm screamed.
A guard shouted through Dante’s phone.
“Breach at the east gate!”
Gunfire erupted outside.
Sofia screamed.
Dante covered her body with his.
Elena dropped beside them.
Sal drew his weapon.
“Move! Safe room!”
They ran into the hallway.
A window shattered downstairs.
More gunfire.
Someone inside the house shouted a code.
Doors unlocked automatically.
Sal stopped dead.
“That’s an internal override.”
Dante’s face went cold.
Alessandra had been right.
Someone inside had opened the gates.
They reached the safe room.
Dante pushed Sofia and Elena inside.
“Elena, stay with her.”
“Where are you going?”
“To end this.”
“No.”
His eyes flashed.
“No?”
“You promised her safety, not revenge.”
A shot cracked downstairs.
Dante looked at Sofia.
The child was crying silently.
His face changed.
He stepped into the safe room.
Sal remained outside.
“Lock it.”
Dante nodded.
The steel door began to close.
Then Sal suddenly jerked.
A red stain spread across his shoulder.
He fell forward.
Behind him stood Sofia’s nanny.
The thin young woman from the restaurant.
Her name was Camille.
She held a gun with both hands.
Dante stared.
“Camille?”
Her face was wet with tears.
“I’m sorry.”
She pointed the gun at him.
“Your father has my son.”
The safe-room door stopped six inches from closing.
And somewhere downstairs, Vittorio Rinaldi walked into his son’s house.
For one suspended second, nobody moved.
Sofia looked from Camille to Dante.
“Why does Camille have a gun?”
Elena’s heart broke at the question.
Camille lowered the weapon another inch.
“Sofia, sweetheart—”
“Don’t call her that,” Dante said.
The words were quiet, but Camille recoiled as if struck.
Then Dante looked at his daughter and softened his voice.
“Camille is scared because someone hurt her family.”
Sofia frowned.
“Like us?”
Dante’s face changed.
“Yes.”
The answer made Camille begin crying harder.
She whispered, “I didn’t want them to touch Lucas.”
Sofia hugged Bunny against her chest.
“Is Lucas your little boy?”
“Yes.”
“Then Daddy will get him.”
Everyone looked at Dante.
The absolute faith in Sofia’s voice seemed to hit him harder than the betrayal.
Elena saw the choice happen inside him.
The old Dante would have seen Camille as a traitor first and a mother second.
The man Alessandra had begged him to become saw both.
He lowered his weapon.
“Tell me everything you gave them.”
Camille wiped her face.
“Security rotations. East gate override. The code for the staff entrance.”
“Safe-room code?”
“No.”
“Project Stella?”
“No.”
“Where Sofia sleeps?”
Camille looked ashamed.
“They already knew.”
Dante’s eyes went cold.
That meant another source.
Someone beyond Camille had been feeding Vittorio details.
Sal, still on the floor, muttered, “There’s your internal access.”
Dante looked at him.
“Not all of it.”
“No.”
The house suddenly felt full of invisible doors.
Elena realized Project Stella had not merely been activated because Vittorio was back.
It had been activated because Alessandra had expected betrayal to arrive wearing a familiar face.
May you like
Then the first downstairs window broke, and the time for theories ended.
Sofia reached for Elena’s hand. Elena took it immediately. Dante noticed that too. In the middle of gunfire, betrayal, and a house full of secrets, his daughter had chosen connection instead of hiding. For once, he did the same.
