Chapter 7 - PAGE 312

No one let Nora go to Port 17.
More importantly, Nora did not insist.
This surprised Sebastian.
She saw it in his face.
“What?”
they were in federal command room near Chelsea.
“You stayed.”
Nora laughed.
“I have a six-year-old.”
“Yes.”
“And no tactical training.”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel died partly because every man in this story thought proximity to danger made him responsible for solving it personally.”
Sebastian absorbed.
“Fair.”
She continued:
“I can help here.”
How?
Daniel’s notes.
Financial logic.
Mercer wanted Julian at midnight.
Why?
Page 312.
What could be on one page worth years?
Julian thought.
“Names.”
“Whose?”
“Carlo's final protected list.”
St. Matthew ledger likely ended with people exempted from restitution exposure because cooperation agreements or political protection.
If page 312 listed Mercer’s law-enforcement contacts, he needed it destroyed.
Or if it listed his ownership.
Nora looked at microfilm.
Page 311 ended mid-entry.
MERCER, GIDEON — SPECIAL DISBURSEMENT.
Next page likely explanation.
Daniel had cut it because most dangerous.
Baby book hidden.
Mercer now had.
Why bring Julian?
Maybe page incriminated Julian too.
Mercer wanted exchange for testimony?
Then Agent Keene received message to Julian.
Come alone or I publish what Daniel learned about your father.
Julian laughed.
“Everyone knows father was criminal.”
Nora looked at him.
“Not that.”
“What?”
She searched Daniel notebooks.
One line she ignored:
J.C. DOESN’T KNOW PETER.
Peter Bellini.
Daniel's father.
Julian Caruso doesn’t know Peter.
What didn't Julian know?
Nora flipped.
Another:
P.B. / C.C. / J.C. blood issue? verify.
Blood.
Her pulse changed.
“Oh.”
Sebastian looked.
“What?”
Nora hated saying.
“Daniel was checking whether Peter Bellini had biological connection to Julian.”
Silence.
Julian stared.
“What?”
Daniel had assembled old correspondence, medical-billing records, and private letters pointing toward a paternity secret. None of it alone was biological proof, but page 312 could contain Carlo’s own acknowledgment.
Sebastian went white.
“Peter Bellini was close to my mother.”
Julian looked at him.
“Don't.”
Nora held hands.
“Not proof.”
Good.
They examined copied correspondence.
Carlo paid Peter privately for years.
One memo:
FOR J. SCHOOL — P.B. REQUEST.
Julian’s schooling paid through Peter?
Weird.
Then Nora found scanned letter Daniel marked unverified.
Carlo to Greco:
Peter has no claim. Julian remains my son in every legal and family sense.
The room stopped.
Julian sat.
Sebastian stared.
“What the hell does that mean?”
Greco was brought by video from protective location.
He closed eyes.
“You found it.”
“Answer.”
Greco said:
“Julian is Peter Bellini’s biological son.”
Silence.
Not Daniel's brother? That makes Daniel and Julian half-brothers? Peter fathered Julian and later Daniel with someone else. Yes! Then Daniel was Julian’s half-brother. This is dramatic "missing husband really was" deeper: Daniel was half-brother of mafia prince, but he himself didn't know? Daniel had suspected late. Nice.
Sebastian looked destroyed.
“My brother?”
“Legally and in every way Carlo raised him.”
“But biologically?”
“Peter.”
Julian stared at screen.
“Did my mother know?”
“Yes.”
“Carlo?”
“Yes.”
“Peter?”
“Yes.”
“Me?”
“No.”
Another secret.
Of course.
Julian stood, then sat.
Nora's mind raced.
Daniel Bellini—Peter’s later son.
That made Daniel and Julian paternal half-brothers.
Did Daniel know?
Notebook said blood issue verify.
Likely discovered just before death.
He had not confirmed.
Mercer had page 312 maybe proof.
Mercer wanted Julian because biological link could destabilize Caruso succession? Sebastian was leader, Julian presumed dead. Not enough.
The leverage was emotional as much as legal.
But there was more.
Greco said:
“Page 312 is Carlo’s settlement with Peter.”
"What settlement?"
Peter agreed never to claim Julian publicly.
In exchange Carlo protected Peter and later Daniel after Peter’s cooperation.
St. Matthew paid for Daniel's mother's relocation after Peter died.
So Daniel's childhood survival was funded by Caruso restitution.
Everything looped.
Mercer could expose Carlo as paying to conceal paternity and using fund for personal secret.
Scandal.
But why worth murder?
Page 312 also contained Mercer’s signature as witness and an indemnity:
G.M. HOLDS ORIGINAL PATERNITY PROOF + CORONER FILE.
Coroner file.
Julian's fake death? No, this predates.
Mercer had built leverage on Caruso family for decades.
Page 312 proved he knew and participated in concealment of Peter's cooperation identities.
Federal witness-security obstruction.
Potential crimes.
He needed it.
Julian said:
“He’ll destroy it.”
Keene:
“Yes.”
“Then why meet me?”
“Because he wants something else.”
Nora knew.
“He wants you to sign a statement.”
“What?”
“Blame Daniel.”
She saw pattern.
Mercer staged voluntary disappearance.
Edited audio to blame Julian.
He needed final narrative.
If Julian signed that Daniel extorted Caruso family and fled, page could disappear, Mercer could claim all payments were private family hush money.
Maybe.
At 10:40 p.m., Mercer sent terms.
Julian comes.
Signs confession stating he and Daniel conspired to steal St. Matthew funds and extort Gideon.
In return Mercer turns over page 312 and leaves country.
Absurd.
Why would Julian?
Mercer added leverage:
I HAVE DANIEL’S ORIGINAL FEDERAL SOURCE FILE.
IT NAMES NORA AS A KNOWING PARTICIPANT.
Nora froze.
False?
Likely forged.
If released, could implicate her in money laundering, affect Lily custody, ruin life.
Julian looked.
“I'll go.”
Nora snapped:
“No.”
He stared.
She continued:
“Not for me.”
“He can frame you.”
“Then evidence fights it.”
“He can—”
“Do not make me your reason.”
Julian stopped.
Same lesson.
Sebastian watched.
Nora breathed.
“You decide whether you go because you want to help catch him or because of your own guilt. Not because I'm a mother he can threaten.”
Julian looked down.
“Fine.”
Then:
“I want to help catch him.”
Keene nodded.
“Then controlled operation.”
Not alone.
Not family rescue.
Federal.
Julian wore wire.
Sebastian stayed command.
Nora stayed too.
At 11:58, Julian entered Port 17.
Mercer appeared from old chapel.
No weapon visible.
One guard.
Julian laughed.
“You always did prefer accountants to soldiers.”
Mercer smiled.
“Soldiers misunderstand margins.”
Conversation recorded.
Mercer confessed more than lawyers recommend because arrogant men love explaining architecture.
He took Daniel because Daniel had page 312 copy? Wait Mercer now has original from baby book. He admitted Daniel had photographed page before cutting original. He needed to know where copies were.
He staged Daniel's abandonment.
Ordered clinic detention.
Did he order car hit?
Julian asked.
Mercer said:
“I told them stop him.”
Not explicit murder.
Then:
“He ran into the road.”
Could be minimization.
Guard driver testimony later decide.
Mercer demanded signature.
Julian refused.
Mercer produced page 312 and lighter.
“Then we burn everyone’s truth.”
Agents ready.
Keene waited for visual.
Julian said:
“You killed Daniel.”
Mercer corrected:
“Your brother made a bad decision.”
Julian froze.
Mercer smiled.
“He was Peter's son too.”
There.
He knew.
“You think he found out by accident?”
Mercer continued.
“I let him.”
Why?
To turn him against Caruso.
He sent Daniel old paternity records hoping Daniel would expose family and destabilize Sebastian.
Instead Daniel followed money and found Mercer.
Backfired.
“That's why you took him.”
“Yes.”
Clear enough.
Keene gave signal.
Agents entered.
Mercer’s guard drew gun.
Julian dropped.
One shot into ceiling.
Agents subdued guard.
Mercer ran into freezer corridor.
Sebastian stood from command screen instinctively.
Nora grabbed sleeve.
“Not your job.”
He stopped.
Good.
Police caught Mercer at loading bay.
No cinematic death.
No mafia execution.
Handcuffs.
Alive.
Page 312 recovered, singed at edge.
At 12:14 a.m., Gideon Mercer was arrested.
At 12:22, Agent Keene called Nora.
“We have him.”
Nora closed eyes.
Not relief exactly.
An ending to danger.
Not grief.
Sebastian sat beside her but did not touch.
After minute:
“Daniel was Julian’s brother.”
Nora whispered.
“Half.”
“Yes.”
“Did Daniel know?”
“Maybe.”
She looked at notebook.
He had been verifying.
He died before certainty.
Sebastian said:
“Does that make Lily—”
Nora understood.
Biologically related to Julian.
Not Sebastian.
Julian half-uncle? Lily is Julian's half-niece. Sebastian no blood connection to Daniel, but Julian is his legal brother. So Lily is family socially? Complicated.
Sebastian stopped himself.
“Never mind.”
Good.
Nora said:
“It makes Lily Daniel’s daughter.”
That was enough.
No one would use genealogy to claim her.
Sebastian nodded.
Outside, sunrise began to lighten harbor.
Nora remembered title? Not needed.
She had spent three years imagining the moment someone would tell her what happened.
She thought truth would feel like door opening.
Instead it felt like a room filled with all the people who had chosen secrecy and one empty chair belonging to the man who could not explain himself anymore.
Daniel had not abandoned them.
He had loved them.
He had also hidden danger.
He had been brave.
He had been foolish.
He had been Peter Bellini’s son.
Julian Caruso’s half-brother.
A federal source.
An accountant.
A husband.
A father.
No single revelation replaced the rest.
At 5:45 a.m., Nora left command center.
Sebastian walked beside her to sidewalk.
“Car?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Can I walk you to Carmen’s?”
She looked at him.
Two bodyguards stayed half block behind.
Rain had stopped.
Boston smelled wet and cold.
“Okay.”
They walked.
No romance.
Not yet.
At Carmen’s building, Sebastian stopped.
Nora turned.
“Thank you.”
He shook head.
“For what?”
“For stopping when I tell you.”
His face changed.
“That's not enough.”
“No.”
She looked toward window where Lily slept.
“But it’s a beginning.”
Then she went upstairs.
Sebastian stayed on sidewalk only long enough to see apartment light turn on.
May you like
Then he left.
That mattered too.
