Chapter 7 - A FAMILY DEBT

Rose finally told them the truth at midnight.

She sat in Gabriel's living room with a blanket over her knees and a cup of tea untouched beside her.

Claire sat across from her.

Gabriel stood near the fireplace.

Matteo remained by the door.

Rose looked older than she had that morning.

“I met Claire when she was six.”

Claire stared.

“My mother knew you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rose sighed.

“Because your mother came to me after your father disappeared.”

Claire's throat tightened.

“She asked for help.”

“What kind?”

“She was afraid.”

Gabriel looked at Rose.

“Of my father?”

“Of everyone.”

Rose continued.

“Your father had discovered that Thomas was going to expose a financial scheme. He wanted to run with your mother and you.”

Claire whispered, “But he never came.”

“He was intercepted.”

“By whom?”

Rose looked at Gabriel.

“Your grandfather.”

Gabriel went still.

“My grandfather?”

“He ordered Thomas taken.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Rose's voice shook.

“I found out too late.”

“What happened to him?”

“We don't know.”

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

“You told me he was dead.”

“I assumed.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“Assumed?”

Rose nodded.

“I had no body. No grave. Nothing.”

“Then why did everyone say he was dead?”

“Because your father needed the story to end.”

Gabriel looked away.

Rose continued.

“Your mother wanted to disappear. I helped her.”

Claire stared.

“You helped us?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father once saved my life.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

Rose smiled faintly.

“Long before you were born, your father worked for your grandfather. He wasn't proud of it, but he believed he could change things from inside.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Did he?”

“No.”

Rose looked at Claire.

“But he tried.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because every time I thought the danger had passed, it returned.”

She looked at Gabriel.

“Your father died believing his secrets were buried.”

“But they weren't.”

“No.”

Rose reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small key.

Not brass.

Silver.

She placed it on the table.

“Your mother gave me this.”

Claire picked it up.

“What does it open?”

“A room beneath the old Moretti theater.”

Gabriel stared.

“That theater was demolished.”

“Not all of it.”

Silence.

Claire looked at him.

“What's down there?”

Rose's expression darkened.

“Records.”

“About my father?”

“About everyone.”

Gabriel took the key.

“Why now?”

Rose answered softly.

“Because Adrian knows you have found the first box.”

Claire frowned.

“Then why hasn't he taken the rest?”

Rose looked at her.

“Because he wants Gabriel to open it.”

Gabriel understood.

“It's a trap.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked between them.

“What happens if we don't?”

Rose's eyes filled with fear.

“He will find another way to force you.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Rose, what did my father do with those records?”

“He used them to control people.”

“Politicians?”

“Some.”

“Police?”

“Some.”

“Businessmen?”

“Many.”

Gabriel's face became hard.

“And Adrian?”

Rose nodded.

“Adrian helped him.”

Claire whispered, “Then why betray him?”

“Because Adrian wanted the records for himself.”

Gabriel understood.

“Leverage.”

“Yes.”

He looked at Claire.

“And my father hid one final record.”

Rose nodded.

“Your father's confession.”

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

“My father confessed?”

“Not publicly.”

“To whom?”

Rose looked at Claire.

“To your mother.”

Claire's breath caught.

“She kept it?”

“She hid it.”

“Where?”

Rose shook her head.

“I don't know.”

The lights went out.

Everyone froze.

Matteo reached for his weapon.

Gabriel raised a hand.

“Wait.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then the front door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Adrian Vale.

Claire's heart raced.

Gabriel moved in front of her.

Adrian smiled.

“I expected more questions.”

Gabriel's voice was cold.

“You're done.”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“She isn't.”

Claire stepped around Gabriel.

“Where is my father?”

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“Yes.”

The admission stunned her.

Adrian continued.

“Because if I tell you, Gabriel will kill me.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Claire looked at him.

“Would you?”

Gabriel answered honestly.

“I don't know.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“At least you're finally honest.”

He threw an old photograph onto the floor.

It showed Thomas Donovan alive.

Older.

Standing beside a woman Claire didn't recognize.

Claire picked it up.

“When was this?”

“Three years ago.”

Her world stopped.

“My father is alive?”

Adrian looked at Gabriel.

“That's why I came.”

Gabriel's face changed.

“You're saying Thomas survived?”

Adrian nodded.

“And he has been hiding from all of us.”

Claire's hands shook.

“Where?”

Adrian smiled.

“That's the question.”

Then he walked backward toward the door.

Gabriel stepped forward.

Adrian raised one finger.

“If you follow me, the photograph disappears.”

He left.

Claire looked at Gabriel.

“Find my father.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I will.”

She wiped her tears.

“No.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“We will.”

Rose sat quietly.

Gabriel turned toward her.

“You knew Thomas might be alive.”

“I suspected.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

Rose looked at Claire.

“Of hope.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Rose's voice trembled.

“If Thomas is alive, then someone has spent twenty years keeping him hidden.”

Gabriel understood.

“And whoever did it has resources.”

“Yes.”

Matteo checked the windows.

“Boss, we should move.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“If Adrian wanted us dead, he wouldn't have shown us the photograph.”

“Then what does he want?”

Gabriel stared at the door.

“He wants us to chase him.”

Claire understood.

“And if we do?”

“We walk into whatever he prepared.”

Rose reached for Claire's hand.

“Your father always believed the truth was worth a price.”

Claire squeezed her fingers.

“Then we'll pay it.”

Gabriel looked at both women.

For most of his life, people had asked him to choose between loyalty and truth.

Now he realized the choice had never been that simple.

Loyalty without truth was obedience.

Truth without compassion was cruelty.

He needed both.

His phone rang.

An unknown number.

Gabriel answered.

Adrian's voice came through.

“Tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“The old ballroom.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Which one?”

Adrian laughed.

“The place where your father first saw Claire's mother dance.”

The line ended.

Claire looked at him.

“That was my grandmother's ballroom.”

Gabriel nodded.

“And it has been closed for years.”

Rose stood.

“No.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You know something.”

Rose's eyes filled with fear.

“I know that if you go there, you will finally learn why your father was afraid of the Donovans.”

Claire took a breath.

“Then tomorrow, we go.”

Rose closed her eyes.

Because she knew what they didn't.

The old ballroom had one room nobody had ever been allowed to enter.

And twenty years ago, Thomas Donovan had hidden something there.

Something worth destroying an entire family to keep secret.

Rose sat quietly after Adrian left.

Gabriel turned toward her.

“You knew Thomas might be alive.”

“I suspected.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I was afraid.”

Rose looked at Claire.

“Of hope.”

Rose closed her eyes.

Because she knew what they didn't.

The old ballroom had one room nobody had ever been allowed to enter.

And twenty years ago, Thomas Donovan had hidden something there.

Something worth destroying an entire family to keep secret.

But Rose had one final confession.

“Gabriel, I lied about one thing.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“I said your grandfather ordered Thomas taken.”

“Yes.”

“He did.”

“But?”

Rose's voice shook.

“Your father stopped him.”

Gabriel went still.

“What?”

“Your father was the one who helped Thomas escape.”

Claire stared.

“That changes everything.”

“Yes.”

Rose looked at Gabriel.

“Your father did terrible things. But he also protected people.”

Gabriel felt confused.

“He could be both.”

Rose nodded.

“That is what I wanted you to understand.”

Claire looked at the letters.

“My mother knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she hate him?”

“She didn't.”

Claire froze.

“She was afraid of him.”

Rose corrected herself.

“That is different.”

Gabriel sat down.

His entire understanding of his father had been built around one simple idea: monster.

Now the truth was more uncomfortable.

His father had been a man capable of cruelty and protection, selfishness and sacrifice.

A complicated man who had made unforgivable choices.

Gabriel whispered, “Maybe that's why I spent so long trying to be the opposite.”

Claire sat beside him.

“You don't have to be his opposite.”

He looked at her.

“You can just be yourself.”

He smiled.

“I don't know who that is.”

She took his hand.

“Then we'll find out.”

Rose watched them.

For the first time, she looked relieved.

“Tomorrow,” she said, “the ballroom.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

Outside, snow began falling again.

The old city disappeared beneath white.

May you like

But beneath the quiet streets, old secrets were moving.

And this time, they were moving toward the two people who had finally stopped running from them.
