Chapter 9 - THE PROMISE I MADE

I arrived in seven minutes.
The front door was open.
No guards.
No lights.
Nothing.
I entered with my weapon drawn.
"Ethan!"
No answer.
"Claire!"
Silence.
Then I heard something upstairs.
A child crying.
I ran.
The bedroom door was locked.
"Ethan!"
"It's me!"
He sounded breathless.
I kicked the door.
Once.
Twice.
On the third impact, it opened.
Ethan stood inside.
Four girls behind him.
Claire was there too.
Nobody was hurt.
I nearly collapsed from relief.
Then Ethan pointed toward the bathroom.
"He left."
"Who?"
"Richard."
I checked every corner.
Gone.
A message had been written on the mirror.
YOU CAN'T PROTECT THEM FOREVER.
Beneath it was a time.
9:00 A.M.
I looked at the clock.
8:41.
Ethan asked, "What happens at nine?"
"I don't know."
But I suspected.
Richard had access to my financial network.
He knew every weakness.
He knew the estate.
He knew Ethan.
And he knew where the girls were.
At 8:52, my phone received a video.
It showed Mercer.
He was tied to a chair.
His face was bruised.
A woman in a red coat stood behind him.
Evelyn.
I stared.
"That's impossible."
Claire looked over my shoulder.
"Who is she?"
"The woman who claimed to know Nora."
The video began.
Evelyn looked into the camera.
"Alexander, if you're watching this, you've misunderstood everything."
Mercer laughed weakly.
Evelyn slapped him.
"Stop."
She continued.
"Richard Vale is not working alone."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"He's working for someone."
Mercer spoke.
"You'll never find him."
Evelyn turned toward him.
"You're going to tell him."
Mercer looked at the camera.
"Alexander, you think this is about Claire?"
I said nothing.
"It's about Nora."
My hand tightened around the phone.
Mercer continued.
"She found the account."
"What account?" Claire whispered.
Mercer smiled.
"The one that funded your wife's death."
The video ended.
A second video arrived.
It showed a bank statement.
Twelve years earlier.
A payment had been made to a private security company.
The recipient name was hidden.
But the source account was visible.
Hayes Family Holdings.
My own company.
I stared.
Claire looked at me.
"You paid them?"
"No."
"But it's your account."
"It was."
I called Marcus.
"Freeze every account."
"Already done."
"How long has Richard had access?"
"Four months."
"Then he couldn't have made the payment twelve years ago."
Silence.
Marcus understood.
"Someone else."
I looked at Ethan.
"Who had access?"
"My father."
Claire whispered, "Daniel?"
"No."
I thought of the only other person who had once controlled my finances.
Nora.
My wife.
The truth struck me like a physical blow.
Nora had funded the operation.
Not to kill herself.
To protect herself.
She had created a fake payment trail to make Mercer believe she was connected to the network.
Then she disappeared.
But why?
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Evelyn.
"Alexander."
"Where are you?"
"Safe."
"Where's Mercer?"
"Alive."
"Why?"
"Because you need him."
"Why?"
"Because Richard is going to kill him at nine."
I checked the clock.
8:57.
"Where?"
"Old Bennett warehouse."
I turned to Marcus.
"We're moving."
Claire grabbed my arm.
"I'm coming."
"No."
"Daniel's truth is there."
"Claire."
She looked at me.
"I have spent eight months being told what I am allowed to know."
Her voice broke.
"My husband died. My children were threatened. Men have entered my house and told me what to do. I'm done being afraid."
I understood.
"Fine."
We went together.
At 9:04, we reached the warehouse.
Mercer was tied to a chair in the center.
Richard stood behind him.
A pistol rested against Mercer's temple.
He smiled when he saw me.
"You came."
"Let him go."
"No."
"Then tell me what you want."
"Justice."
I almost laughed.
"You don't know the meaning of that word."
Richard's eyes hardened.
"Nora destroyed my family."
"What did she do?"
"She exposed my father."
I froze.
"Your father?"
"Thomas Vale."
I knew the name.
A former federal investigator.
One of the men who had tried to dismantle my organization years ago.
Richard's father had died after being exposed for taking bribes.
Richard blamed Nora.
But Nora had only revealed the evidence.
Richard raised the gun.
"She took everything from us."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"Your father did that."
Richard's finger tightened.
Mercer laughed.
"You see?"
Richard turned.
"You promised me you'd help."
Mercer smiled.
"I promised you whatever kept you useful."
Richard realized too late.
Mercer had manipulated him.
He wasn't his ally.
He was another victim.
Richard turned back.
I moved.
The gun fired.
Mercer screamed.
The bullet struck the chair.
Marcus tackled Richard.
I pulled Mercer away.
Claire ran toward the fallen man.
Richard fought like someone who had nothing left to lose.
Marcus finally restrained him.
I looked at Mercer.
"You lied."
He smiled through blood.
"Everyone lies."
"Not everyone."
I turned toward Claire.
She was standing beside me.
Then the warehouse doors opened.
Federal agents flooded inside.
At their center stood Evelyn Shaw.
She wasn't afraid.
One agent approached me.
"Alexander Hayes?"
"Yes."
"I'm Special Agent Daniel Reeves."
He held up a warrant.
"We're here for Richard Vale and Victor Mercer."
I looked at Mercer.
He laughed.
"You think this ends here?"
"No."
I leaned closer.
"It ends for you here."
He looked at Claire.
Then the smile vanished.
"She doesn't know."
"Know what?"
Mercer looked at me.
"Who her daughters' real father was."
Claire stiffened.
"I already know."
Mercer shook his head.
"No."
He smiled.
"You know who Daniel claimed was their father."
Then he whispered:
"Ask Lily."
Claire turned toward her daughter.
Lily stood beside Ethan near the warehouse entrance.
Her little face was pale.
She looked at Mercer.
Then at her mother.
"I remember Daddy."
Everyone went silent.
"What did he look like?" Claire asked.
Lily pointed at me.
My heart stopped.
"He looked like Alex."
We reached the warehouse at 8:58.
Two minutes before the deadline.
Richard stood beneath a hanging lamp.
Mercer was tied to a chair.
Claire stayed behind me.
Marcus covered the entrance.
Richard smiled.
"You brought her."
"She came."
He laughed.
"That's what Nora used to say."
I took one step forward.
"Let Mercer go."
"Why?"
"Because he's not your enemy."
Richard looked at Mercer.
"That's where you're wrong."
Mercer spat blood.
"You stupid little bastard."
Richard hit him.
I raised my gun.
"Enough."
Richard froze.
He looked at me.
"You think you're different from them."
"I am."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You're just better dressed."
Maybe he was right.
I had spent years convincing myself that power made me different from criminals.
It didn't.
What mattered was what I chose to do with it.
I lowered my weapon.
"You blame Nora."
"Yes."
"She exposed your father."
"She destroyed him."
"He destroyed himself."
Richard's eyes filled with rage.
"He was protecting me."
"No."
I took another step.
"He was protecting his own money."
Richard's gun trembled.
"You don't know anything."
"I know your father took bribes."
"You don't know why."
"Because he was corrupt."
"Because people like Mercer paid him."
Mercer laughed.
Richard looked at him.
"You promised you'd protect my father."
"I promised whatever you needed to hear."
Richard finally understood.
His anger turned to despair.
He lowered the gun.
Marcus moved instantly.
But then Mercer lunged.
He grabbed the weapon.
A shot rang out.
Claire screamed.
Mercer dropped.
Richard stood frozen.
The bullet had struck the floor.
No one was hit.
Federal agents stormed in.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Mercer started laughing.
"You idiots."
I looked at him.
"You lost."
"No."
He looked toward Claire.
"You still don't know what Daniel did."
Claire stepped forward.
"Tell me."
Mercer smiled.
"He loved you."
She stared.
"But he also lied."
"I know."
"He didn't marry you because he was saving you."
"What then?"
"He was trying to use you."
Claire's face crumpled.
I stepped beside her.
Mercer continued.
"The girls were the key."
"To what?"
"The trust."
I looked at him.
"Which trust?"
Mercer smiled.
"Your father's."
Silence.
"The Hayes family trust was designed to transfer control of the network to the first direct heir who reached adulthood."
I looked at Ethan.
He was sixteen.
Mercer laughed.
"And when he turns eighteen, everything changes."
I understood.
The attacks weren't about Claire.
They weren't even about the girls.
They were about Ethan.
Someone wanted my son to inherit an empire he had never asked for.
I turned toward the federal agent.
"Take Mercer."
They pulled him away.
Claire looked at me.
"What do we do now?"
I looked at Ethan.
"We break the trust."
Marcus shook his head.
"You can't."
"Watch me."
For the first time, the answer felt simple.
I had spent years protecting my empire.
Now I was going to destroy it.
Before we left, Claire stopped beside me.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For believing my children."
I looked toward Lily.
"I believe them because they don't know how to lie."
Claire smiled.
"Adults do."
"Too well."
She reached for my hand.
I hesitated.
Then I took it.
Neither of us said anything.
We didn't need to.
Outside, the city was beginning to wake.
May you like
The war was ending.
But the truth was only beginning.
