Chapter 4 - THE SECRETARY THEY THOUGHT WAS INVISIBLE

Midtown Storage occupied four floors beneath an office building that sold luxury watches upstairs and secrets below.

At 1:24 a.m., Maya stepped out of a service elevator wearing a black coat Caleb had fitted with a tracking beacon, a microphone, and enough concealed Kevlar to make bending difficult.

Elias hated the plan.

This pleased her more than it should have.

"You are not a field operative," he had said in the SUV.

"You are not a human resources specialist, yet you apparently handle terminations."

Caleb had stared out the window so no one would see him smile.

Now Elias's voice murmured through the tiny receiver in Maya's ear.

"Stop at the corner."

She stopped.

"Camera left."

"I see it."

"You shouldn't."

"I have eyes."

"Maya."

"Elias."

Silence.

Then, "Turn right."

Locker 318 stood halfway down the corridor.

No visible guards.

No Anna.

Maya approached.

A keypad glowed beside the door.

Her phone buzzed.

CODE 2047.

She entered it.

The door rolled up.

Inside sat one folding chair.

One laptop.

One black trash bag.

No Anna.

Maya's stomach dropped.

"Where is she?" she whispered.

The laptop screen lit.

A live video feed appeared.

Anna was somewhere dark, still tied to the chair.

A distorted voice came through the speakers.

"Place the contracts in the bag."

Maya held up the document case.

"Let her go."

"You are not negotiating."

"Then you chose the wrong secretary."

In her ear, Elias muttered something in Italian.

The voice continued.

"Put down the case."

Maya did.

"Step back."

She obeyed.

The feed changed.

A man wearing a ski mask entered the room where Anna was being held.

He lifted a gun.

Maya's blood went cold.

"Wait."

"Then cooperate."

"I brought what you wanted."

"Those are copies."

Of course they knew.

Someone inside Elias's organization had real-time knowledge of document control.

Maya's mind accelerated.

"What proves you have the originals?"

A pause.

Good.

She pressed.

"If you already knew what we copied, you wouldn't need me."

The distorted voice sharpened.

"You have ten seconds."

"No. You have a problem."

"Maya," Elias warned quietly.

She ignored him.

"You can't use the contracts without Elias's current authorization code. EC-7 is obsolete."

Silence.

The person on the other end had not expected her to know that.

Maya continued.

"And if your plan was simply to kill Anna, you would have done it before sending me here. You need something else."

The gunman shifted.

The distorted voice said, "What?"

"You need me to tell you what I noticed."

Maya watched the live feed.

Anna's eyes moved slightly.

Left.

Then left again.

Not random.

Maya followed the background.

A metal shelf.

Yellow paint.

An emergency placard.

FIRE CLASS C.

She had seen shelves like that before.

Not here.

At the Conti vehicle depot in Queens.

Her heartbeat changed.

She spoke carefully.

"Northstar Civic Trust isn't your real concern."

The voice said nothing.

"The beneficiary is."

Still nothing.

Maya was improvising.

"Because whoever created the documents made one mistake."

Elias's voice came through her ear.

"What mistake?"

She had no idea.

Yet.

Maya stared at the laptop and remembered the contracts.

Loss-payee clauses.

Balloon debt.

Insurance.

Then it came.

"Northstar doesn't receive money first," she said. "It receives title."

The distorted voice hissed.

"What did you find?"

There.

Fear.

She had found the pressure point.

Maya stepped closer to the laptop.

"Let Anna go and I'll tell you."

The screen went black.

Then the storage facility lights died.

Elias's voice snapped in her ear.

"Down."

Maya dropped.

Gunfire cracked through the corridor.

Metal screamed.

Somewhere ahead, Caleb's team moved.

Maya crawled behind a concrete pillar while shots echoed.

A man rushed from a side passage.

He never reached her.

Elias appeared from the darkness and drove him into the wall with terrifying force.

Maya had seen Elias angry.

She had never seen him violent.

The difference was intimate and horrifying.

He disarmed the man, handed him to Caleb, then turned to Maya.

"Are you hit?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He grabbed her shoulders.

"Elias."

His eyes searched her face.

"I said I'm fine."

"Do not use that phrase with me tonight."

Despite everything, she almost smiled.

Caleb approached.

"Facility secure. Two men detained. One escaped through loading."

"Anna?"

Maya asked before Elias could.

Caleb checked his phone.

"Queens team found her. Alive."

Maya's knees nearly failed.

Elias caught her elbow.

She closed her eyes.

"Is she hurt?"

"Bruised. Scared. No gunshot."

Maya breathed.

For the first time since seeing the photograph, oxygen reached her lungs.

Then Caleb held up a phone recovered from one of the attackers.

"There's more."

The device contained encrypted messages.

Most were wiped remotely within minutes.

One survived.

DELIVER HART TO V.S. AFTER RETRIEVAL.

Maya stared.

"V.S."

Victor Sanz.

The missing CFO.

Elias's face hardened.

"Find him."

By dawn, they did.

Victor was not kidnapped.

He was hiding.

A traffic camera located his car entering a private garage on East Seventy-First Street.

The building belonged to Sebastian Conti.

Elias stood in his operations room staring at the image.

Frank, now bandaged, looked equally stunned.

"I told you Sebastian didn't do kidnappings."

"You also told me you were helping him," Elias said.

Frank lowered his head.

Maya sat at the conference table with coffee strong enough to dissolve regret.

She studied the surviving message.

Something bothered her.

"V.S. could be Victor Sanz."

Everyone looked at her.

"Could be?"

"It's too convenient."

Elias raised an eyebrow.

"The missing CFO is inside my uncle's building."

"Yes."

"And his initials are V.S."

"Yes."

"And you're arguing that is a coincidence?"

"I'm arguing that people who build shell companies and forge authorization metadata usually don't label kidnappings with the intended recipient's initials."

Caleb leaned against the table.

"What do you think it means?"

"I think someone wants us to look at Victor."

Frank frowned.

"Why?"

"Because we already suspect Sebastian."

Maya stood and walked to the whiteboard.

She wrote:

SEBASTIAN — motive unknown

VICTOR — financial access

FRANK — coerced

MAYA — framed

Then below it:

WHO BENEFITS IF ELIAS SUSPECTS ALL OF THEM?

Elias stared.

"You think we're being directed."

"I think I spent two years managing your schedule while pretending not to hear half the conversations that happened around me."

Frank looked uncomfortable.

Maya continued.

"Sebastian and Victor dislike each other."

"Correct."

"Victor thinks Sebastian is reckless. Sebastian thinks Victor is weak."

"Also correct."

"So why would they build a financial coup together?"

Silence.

Caleb said, "Money."

"Maybe. But their methods don't match."

Maya pulled the three midnight contracts closer.

"These are elegant. Layered. Designed to survive legal review."

"Victor," Elias said.

"Exactly."

She pointed toward the false termination order.

"This is crude. Immediate. Personal."

"Sebastian."

"Maybe."

Frank interrupted.

"Sebastian told me to delay you. He did not tell me to kidnap you."

Maya nodded.

"So there are at least two operations."

Elias's eyes narrowed.

"One wanted the contracts signed."

"And another wanted me silenced after I read them."

Caleb's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"What?"

He listened.

Then turned toward Elias.

"We have Sebastian."

"Where?"

"His townhouse."

"And Victor?"

"Gone."

Maya looked at the clock.

6:17 a.m.

The first gray light of the new year was touching Manhattan.

Elias put on his coat.

"You're staying here."

Maya opened her mouth.

He raised one finger.

"Not because you are my secretary."

She closed it.

"Because Anna is downstairs and you need to see her."

That stopped her.

Elias moved toward the door.

Then Maya said, "Ask Sebastian about Northstar before Victor."

He paused.

"Why?"

"Watch which name scares him."

Elias looked back.

Something had changed between them during the night.

Not softness.

Recognition.

He nodded once.

Then disappeared through the door.

Maya found Anna in a guest room wrapped in blankets, holding a cup of hot chocolate with both hands.

The moment she saw Maya, she started crying.

Maya crossed the room and held her.

"I'm sorry."

Anna shook her head violently.

"This is not your fault."

"They took you because of me."

"They took me because they're psychopaths."

That was very Anna.

Maya laughed through tears.

Then Anna pulled back.

"One of them said something."

"What?"

"He thought I was unconscious."

Maya's stomach tightened.

"What did he say?"

Anna swallowed.

"He called someone."

"And?"

"He said, 'Tell Mrs. Conti the secretary took the bait.'"

Maya went still.

"Mrs. Conti?"

Anna nodded.

Maya knew only one woman everyone in the organization called that.

Not Sebastian's wife.

Not Elias's late mother.

Celeste Conti.

Elias's aunt.

His father's younger sister.

The woman who chaired the family foundation, hosted hospital galas, and kissed Maya on both cheeks every Christmas while asking whether she had found a nice man yet.

Maya stepped away from the bed.

Her phone was already in her hand.

She called Elias.

He answered immediately.

"Maya?"

"Don't confront Sebastian alone."

A pause.

"Why?"

"Because Anna heard the kidnappers make a call."

Elias's voice changed.

"To whom?"

Maya looked out at the city.

May you like

New York was waking beneath fresh snow.

"Your aunt."
