Chapter 4 - THE PHOTO OF ELI

Victor denied taking the photograph.

Good.

Denial is not evidence.

He admitted the sedan belonged to one of his security companies at the time.

Also admitted he had assigned surveillance to Selena and Eli.

My anger became physical.

“You photographed him?”

“Not that picture.”

“Then what pictures?”

“Periodic welfare checks.”

“Without consent.”

“Yes.”

Selena sat beside Nina? She now had independent lawyer Rachel? Let's create Amanda Cole. She insisted on being present for this meeting remotely.

She looked like she wanted to throw chair through screen.

“You followed my child.”

Victor said:

“I made sure nobody else did.”

“That sentence is insane.”

Yes.

Victor explained.

After anonymous threat, Francesca ordered more surveillance.

He assigned employee:

Marco D’Angelo.

Former police.

Now dead? Better alive, retired in Arizona.

The black sedan plate matched Marco’s assigned vehicle.

Could Marco have taken threat photo to justify more money/security?

Possible.

Why send anonymously to Francesca?

Maybe because Victor needed family to keep monitoring? Or Marco worked for rival?

Investigators contacted Marco.

He agreed interview.

He said:

“I took photos for Victor. I did not send threat.”

Could prove some.

His work archive old external drive.

Still had copies.

One photo matched threat exactly?

If yes, then leak came from Victor surveillance.

Marco stared.

“That’s mine.”

There.

Someone took his surveillance photo and sent anonymously.

Who had access?

Victor.

Office assistant.

Francesca’s security liaison.

One name:

Raymond “Ray” Costa?

But Ray is Dominic's current driver/bodyguard. Could create twist trusted Ray? Maybe user has Ray in opening, likely significant. Could be impactful if Ray accidentally/knowingly connected. But user probably expects betrayal. We can use Ray as suspect but not villain maybe.

Marco’s reports went to Victor’s encrypted office archive.

Who administered?

Ray.

Nine years ago Ray worked junior security under Victor before becoming Dominic’s driver.

Interesting.

Did Ray know Eli?

Could he have seen reports.

Opening, Ray whispered "Boss what's wrong?" Maybe if he knew child, that's lie. Strong twist.

Let's use.

Victor said Ray managed transfers for two years including threat period.

I stared at him.

Ray had been beside me when I saw Eli.

Asked if kid was mine.

If he knew—

I called him.

No answer.

Security said he had left for errand.

Phone off.

Old instincts screamed traitor.

But no assumption.

I told Samuel? Need current chief maybe Ray himself is security driver, another chief named Luca Ferraro. Let's create Luca.

“Preserve Ray’s access. Do not detain. Find through lawful means.”

Luca looked surprised.

Good.

Ray returned two hours later carrying takeout.

Phone battery dead.

He walked into conference room confused.

Then saw faces.

“Boss?”

I placed photo.

“Do you know this?”

He froze.

Not good.

“Yes.”

Selena stood.

“You knew my son.”

Ray looked at her.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How long?”

“Four years.”

I almost hit him.

Didn’t.

“Explain.”

Ray sat only after told.

He had worked for Victor.

Processed surveillance reports.

Saw Eli.

Recognized resemblance.

Asked Victor.

Victor said child was not mine and family matter closed.

Ray believed?

“At first.”

Then?

“The older he got in photos…”

He looked at me.

“I wondered.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Fear.

Not of me?

“Yes.”

“Of who?”

“Mrs. Moretti.”

My mother.

Again.

“She told me directly never to mention Selena.”

“When?”

“After I transferred to you.”

So Ray carried secret.

The man driving me to market knew there was a boy.

Did he recognize area?

“Yes.”

“Did you turn down old market road because of accident?”

Ray’s face changed.

“There was an accident.”

“Did you choose route because Selena worked there?”

Silence.

Everyone went still.

“Ray.”

“Yes.”

He had seen updated surveillance? Victor supposedly retired. How know current stand?

Ray confessed he had continued checking once a year on his own.

Not reports.

Social media? Selena barely.

Through market contact.

Why?

“Because I thought someday you should know.”

My jaw tightened.

“So you engineered chance meeting.”

“I saw traffic. Knew route. Took it.”

“You canceled babysitter too?” absurd no.

“No.”

“Then you had no guarantee she was there.”

“She usually was Tuesdays.”

There.

He manipulated.

But toward truth.

Still.

Selena said:

“You watched us.”

Ray looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Did you send threat photo?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I think Victor’s office assistant, Nora Vale.”

Why?

Nora had copied surveillance to sell information to rival families.

She was fired quietly four years ago for “expense fraud.”

No one linked.

Where now?

Works for Richard Falco family.

One of three crime families I was supposed to meet when I saw Selena.

There.

The route, meeting, current threat converge.

Nora may have sent photo to Francesca as proof she possessed information, maybe extortion test.

Did she demand money?

No note only Pretty grandson.

Maybe warning.

She later joined Falco.

Falco knew.

Current canceled meeting with Falco and two families.

Maybe they intended leverage over Dominic using Eli now.

Ray turned route intentionally before meeting because he feared Falco might raise Selena? He says he got a call morning: Falco associate joked about "old fruit in market." He suspected.

He did not tell me because wanted me to see myself before someone weaponized it.

I was furious.

Also understood.

But again one person deciding timing.

I said:

“You don’t work for me until review.”

Ray looked crushed.

“Boss.”

“Paid suspension.”

No humiliation.

No public accusation.

Good.

“Luca takes security.”

Ray nodded.

Selena watched.

“You’re suspending him for telling truth?”

“For manipulating route and withholding material security information.”

Fair.

She considered.

“Okay.”

Ray left.

Nora became target of lawful investigation.

Falco meeting rescheduled under high tension.

I now knew one family possibly held information about my son.

Old me would have sent men.

New me brought lawyer and Luca.

Meeting at neutral hotel.

Falco smiled.

“Family reunion treating you well?”

I stared.

So yes.

“You knew.”

He raised glass.

“New York knows everything eventually.”

“How long?”

“Recently.”

“Nora Vale.”

His smile faded slightly.

Good.

“Former employee.”

“Current consultant.”

“Occasionally.”

“Did she send photograph four years ago?”

“I have no idea.”

Could be true.

“Did you plan to use Eli in negotiations?”

He laughed.

“Dominic, I negotiate ports, not children.”

Maybe.

Then:

“But some men around table might.”

He looked toward Romano? Another family boss.

This became broader risk.

We ended meeting without territory deal.

I did not threaten.

I stated:

“My family is not negotiation material.”

Falco replied:

“Then stop bringing family secrets into business structures.”

That hurt because true.

The anonymous photo investigation eventually traced email? Physical mail no. Nora's old laptop seized? Need legal basis maybe current extortion attempt appears.

Two days later Selena received text from unknown:

YOU FOUND HIS FATHER. NOW ASK WHAT HE’LL PAY TO KEEP THE BOY OUT OF PAPERS.

There.

Current extortion.

Police involved.

Number burner but payment demand followed:

$2 million in crypto.

Threat publish paternity and location.

Now crime.

Investigators traced through exchange mistakes eventually.

Nora involved.

Falco not necessarily.

She was freelancing.

Good.

Nora arrested attempting access exchange account.

She admitted sending old photo four years ago as “insurance” after stealing Victor surveillance files.

No payment demand then because she feared response.

Now media leak made info valuable.

She tried extort.

No grand rival plot.

One opportunist exploiting family secrecy.

Selena said:

“If they had told me four years ago, I could have changed school security.”

“Yes.”

“They thought ignorance protected me.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Do you see why I left?”

I did.

More than I wanted.

The threat photograph changed how Selena saw Ray too.

At first she wanted him gone permanently.

“I do not care why he did it.”

Fair.

“He watched us.”

“Yes.”

“He knew Eli looked like you.”

“Yes.”

“And kept driving you around.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“How can you trust him?”

I did not answer quickly.

That was new.

“Not the same way.”

“What does that mean?”

“He doesn’t get unilateral access to me or family anymore.”

Good.

“And job?”

“Independent review.”

She frowned.

“You really are doing reviews now.”

“I hate it.”

“Good.”

Ray’s report was uncomfortable.

He had violated policy.

Used old contacts to check Selena’s market schedule twice in previous year.

No evidence he sold information.

No contact with Eli.

No financial gain.

He had also heard Falco associates mention “Moretti’s hidden branch” days before meeting.

Instead of reporting formally, he changed route.

Why?

Because he believed if he told me verbally, I would call Victor.

And Victor would bury again.

Ray had distrusted the chain.

So he manipulated me.

Wrong.

Understandable.

Both.

The reviewer recommended reassignment.

Selena read summary through Amanda.

“Do you agree?”

I asked.

“I’m not his boss.”

“No.”

“What do you think?”

She thought.

“He should not drive you.”

“Why?”

“Because driver controls route.”

Of course.

Power hiding in ordinary job.

I nodded.

“He won’t.”

“Then fine.”

That was how Ray moved into compliance training.

Not punishment theater.

Role aligned away from the exact power he misused.

He hated desk.

Good.

Meanwhile, Nora Vale’s extortion attempt forced us to talk to Eli.

Not details.

But enough.

Selena and child therapist agreed:

“Someone may try to take pictures or ask questions because they know Dominic is your father. You do not answer strangers. You go to trusted adult.”

Eli frowned.

“Why do they care?”

I said:

“Because adults can make money from private information.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“Can I punch them?”

“No.”

“Mom?”

“No.”

He sighed.

“Rules.”

Then he asked:

“Are you famous?”

I looked at Selena.

She laughed.

“Unfortunately.”

I said:

“Known.”

“Like basketball player?”

“No.”

“Then boring.”

Good.

We kept him off internet stories as much as possible.

School changed pickup protocol.

No press inside grounds.

Private security outside only after school and Selena approved.

Not Moretti men with visible guns.

Licensed child-safety team.

I paid through written agreement.

Elena? Wrong story. Selena selected vendor with Amanda.

Good.

Then Nora confessed something uglier.

She had not picked Eli randomly.

Victor’s office archive contained a file titled:

CONTINGENCY — S.T.

Selena Turner.

Inside:

address.

medical notes gathered through security contacts.

photographs.

school possibilities.

Not medical records illegally? Could be observable, invoices. Still invasive.

Why contingency?

If Dominic died, Victor planned to reveal Eli to Moretti estate administrators only after threat level reduced.

A child scheduled for inheritance after father’s death.

I felt sick.

Selena looked:

“So even your death was planned around control.”

“Yes.”

Victor had imagined he was preserving dynasty.

He had also made Eli into contingency asset.

I met him again with attorneys.

“Did you plan to tell him only if I died?”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“Whenever safe.”

“That means never.”

He looked down.

“Maybe.”

There.

I asked:

“Did you love him?”

Victor looked shocked.

“Eli?”

“Yes.”

“I never met him.”

“Did you love idea?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Of course.

Family men love heirs abstractly.

Easier than children.

“Then you loved a position.”

Victor’s face tightened.

“Maybe.”

I left.

That night Selena called.

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Do not come over.”

I stopped.

“I wasn’t—”

“You were thinking.”

She knew.

“Why not?”

“Because Eli is asleep and your anger fills rooms.”

There.

Nine years later, still.

I breathed.

“Okay.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Gym.”

She laughed.

“Good.”

I went.

Hit bag.

No one.

Came home.

The next morning I sent no flowers.

Just text:

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING ME.

She replied:

May you like

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING.

That exchange mattered more than apology.
