Chapter 3 - GABRIEL’S STORAGE UNIT

The first clue to Gabriel’s storage unit came from a grocery receipt.

Elena found it in an old cookbook.

Not because she suddenly remembered a secret.

Because after Alexander asked about Gabriel’s estate, she went through the single plastic bin of his belongings she had carried through three apartments.

Receipts.

Photographs.

A cracked phone.

Work badge.

Sophie’s ultrasound.

Ordinary debris.

At bottom, a receipt:

MIDTOWN LOCK STORAGE.

UNIT 317.

Monthly cash payment.

Four years ago.

Elena stared.

Then called her own lawyer.

Not Alexander.

Good.

She had found one through legal aid referral because being cleaning staff inside a mafia-adjacent vault investigation was not a sentence anyone should navigate alone.

Attorney:

Nina Patel.

Nina called Evelyn Shaw.

They coordinated.

Alexander learned thirty minutes later.

He did not enjoy being last.

That was probably healthy.

Storage company still existed.

Unit 317?

Closed for nonpayment three months after Gabriel died.

Contents auctioned?

Maybe.

Records showed unusual:

DO NOT AUCTION — LEGAL HOLD REQUEST.

By who?

No court.

Private attorney letter.

Firm:

Vale & Mercer LLP? Avoid reused names. Let's use Holden Pierce & Rowe.

Who client?

Confidential.

Letter claimed estate dispute.

Storage company held contents for eighteen months.

Then removed by authorized representative presenting notarized document from Elena Vega.

Elena went pale.

“I never signed.”

Document copy existed.

Her signature.

Forged? Handwriting expert later.

Representative name:

Daniel Cross.

No one knew.

Address fake.

Contents gone.

Another dead end?

Not completely.

Storage surveillance retention long gone.

But inventory at removal:

One steel case.

Two banker boxes.

One canvas tool roll.

One child-size wooden music box.

Elena stopped.

“Music box.”

“What?” Nina asked.

“Gabriel made one for Sophie.”

Before birth.

A moon on lid.

Never found after death.

“What was inside?”

“Nothing. It played Clair de Lune.”

Alexander looked at her.

Moon again.

Gabriel hid mechanisms inside symbols.

Where did Daniel Cross take contents?

Vehicle plate recorded.

Rental van.

Rental company archived contract.

Renter:

Daniel Cross.

ID later confirmed fake.

Payment card:

Orchard Holdings corporate card.

Richard Blake.

There.

Not proof Richard physically took it.

But his entity paid.

NYPD and federal financial investigators got involved because forged identity documents and current obstruction tied to Richard.

Alexander stayed out.

Barely.

He hated watching institutions move slower than his men.

Then Elena said:

“If you send your people, I walk.”

He stopped.

“From what?”

“All of it.”

“You can’t walk from being witness.”

“I can stop cooperating voluntarily beyond subpoena.”

Fair.

“No private recovery.”

Alexander nodded.

“Fine.”

“Say it.”

“No private recovery.”

Good.

Investigators searched Richard’s office under warrant connected to arson and evidence tampering.

Found no storage contents.

But invoices to private warehouse in Jersey City.

Warrant.

Warehouse held hundreds of crates.

Art.

Wine.

Cash?

Some.

And Gabriel’s steel case.

Not music box.

Banker boxes gone.

Steel case locked.

Nina attended evidence opening on Elena’s behalf.

Alexander watched via authorized video? Better evidence lab.

Inside:

Engineering drawings.

Vault.

Manual fallback.

Michael’s annotations.

And Gabriel’s letter.

ELENA.

Not delivered.

Her hands shook.

Nina asked:

“Want me to read first?”

“No.”

She opened.

Lena,

If this reaches you, something went wrong.

I am sorry I did not tell you what I was doing.

I told myself secrecy kept you safe.

Maybe that was cowardice.

Elena stopped.

Alexander was not present.

Good.

This was hers.

Gabriel continued:

Michael Carter found evidence someone inside his brother’s organization was using old authorization systems to move money and bury records under Joseph Carter’s dead credentials.

He needed a room that could be sealed from network access.

I built the manual release.

Michael chose the crescent because Alexander would recognize it if he ever got close enough to look without a crowd around him.

Interesting.

Then:

But Michael became afraid Alexander was involved.

Not because he wanted to believe it.

Because a transfer carried Alexander’s signature.

I found the access record proving the signature request originated from Richard Blake’s office terminal while Alexander was in Montreal.

There.

Exculpatory.

Maybe.

Need verify.

I copied the original hardware logs.

If Michael dies, I will bring them to Alexander when I am certain Richard cannot intercept.

Then final:

If I die first, the logs are not in this case.

Of course.

They are inside Sophie’s music box.

Elena covered mouth.

Sophie unborn.

Gabriel built box already.

The music box was missing.

Richard’s people removed storage.

Where?

Maybe banker box.

Inventory said music box specifically.

Could be sold?

Richard would know value only if he read letter after seizing case.

Maybe he did.

If he had case, why not destroy? Perhaps he only took banker boxes/music box, left case hidden in warehouse unopened? Hmm warehouse held case, likely he had access. Why keep incriminating letter? Could be not know contents due lock? Case could be high-security; investigators opened with locksmith. Richard may never manage. The music box separated because visible, maybe someone else took? Storage inventory says all removed to van. Warehouse only case remains. Need trace.

Warehouse inventory from Richard showed auction lots.

Music box transferred to:

Blake Foundation Children’s Center.

Donation.

Why?

Maybe assistant thought toy worthless and donated.

Ridiculous luck, plausible.

Center in Queens.

Music box could still exist?

Four years.

Director checked.

Old donated toys often discarded.

But handcrafted box with moon kept in display cabinet because it did not meet toy safety.

There.

Investigators retrieved under consent/warrant.

Elena saw photograph.

“That’s it.”

Sophie had never seen.

Gabriel made before birth.

The box opened normally.

Played Debussy.

Inside empty.

No obvious logs.

Alexander was there this time only after chain recorded and Elena consented? Let's keep with experts.

Engineer scanned.

False bottom.

Need moon sequence.

Left.

Right.

Center pressure on tiny crescent.

Click.

Sophie’s inherited gesture again.

Inside:

A small solid-state memory module.

Industrial.

Old.

Data recovered.

Original access records.

Date of $40m authorization.

Terminal:

RICHARD BLAKE PRIVATE OFFICE.

Credential:

A.CARTER.

Biometric confirmation?

System old used fingerprint token?

Copied?

Michael note said signature.

Hardware logs show security token cloned?

Need enough.

Record also includes Alexander badge location in Montreal hotel? Independent travel evidence.

Alexander was in Montreal at a legitimate conference.

Flight.

Hotel camera archived? Eight years unlikely, but card receipts, meeting minutes, public photos.

He could not have been in Richard’s NYC office.

Digital request forged.

Michael had died thinking maybe Alexander approved remotely.

But source proves request originated Richard office. Still Alexander could have instructed? Not absolute. However additional email? Hardware captures local physical key? Need proof Richard's terminal. Not Alexander innocence from conspiracy, but no signature personally.

Then another log:

Vault service access.

Richard attempted panel scan twice after Michael’s death.

Blocked.

Then credential:

J.C.

Same terminal.

Richard used dead Joseph Carter profile.

Why?

Legacy account gave access to old hidden funds.

Gabriel’s logs included destination maps.

Orchard Holdings.

Then one shocking line:

Emergency access to Michael’s vehicle telematics.

Date night before crash.

User:

J.C.

Terminal:

Richard Blake.

Alexander’s blood ran cold.

Vehicle telematics.

Could someone disable brakes? Need avoid procedural wrongdoing? Fiction safe. Could alter tracking, not crash mechanism. Maybe access navigation and location, proving Richard tracked him.

Data request:

LOCATION TRACE ENABLED.

Richard knew route.

Then car crash next day.

Not proof murder.

But motive.

Investigators reopened old accident file? Maybe cold case.

Michael’s crash had been ruled loss of control in rain.

But forensic archive photos.

One witness reported black SUV near.

Untraced.

Richard owned? Company fleet SUV.

Maybe.

Need careful.

Alexander wanted certainty.

Elena said:

“Do not make an accident into murder because it hurts less than not knowing.”

He looked.

She had learned from Gabriel death.

“Yes.”

Good.

Gabriel’s own hit-and-run?

Memory module had no 4-years-later data, because hidden since before death. But Richard took storage after Gabriel death, meaning he knew Gabriel mattered. How? Could have surveilled him earlier.

Richard’s emails recovered from warrant:

Find engineer. He still has Michael’s backup.

Date two weeks before Gabriel death.

Then:

Vega no longer a problem.

Sent day after hit-and-run.

That phrase enough for suspicion, not proof.

Investigators dug.

Payment from Orchard Holdings to private contractor on same week.

Contractor owner: Victor Hale. Has vehicular assault history? Let's avoid cliché. Private investigator with black SUV.

Records.

Toll data archived? Four years maybe law enforcement can retrieve from corporate fleet GPS backups.

Vehicle near scene.

This becomes strong.

But maintain mystery for future chapters.

Elena received Gabriel’s letter copy.

She read final paragraph:

Do not tell Sophie I was brave.

Tell her I was scared and tried anyway.

Elena cried.

Alexander looked away.

Then Sophie asked:

“Who’s Daddy?”

She had seen Elena crying over photo.

Elena sat on floor.

Told age-appropriate:

“He made your moon.”

Sophie touched necklace.

“Was he nice?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know me?”

Elena’s voice broke.

“He knew you were coming.”

Sophie smiled.

“That’s silly. I was in your tummy.”

Elena laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Alexander left them alone.

For once, a family revelation did not belong to him just because it touched his vault.

That night Richard Blake was charged with obstruction and arson-related offenses.

More charges possible.

He denied involvement in Michael’s death and Gabriel’s death.

Through lawyer:

Alexander Carter is rewriting family history to protect himself.

Maybe he would say that.

Then media received anonymous leak:

ALEXANDER CARTER’S SECRET VAULT CONTAINS RECORDS OF ORGANIZED CRIME.

The story exploded.

May you like

The vault had opened.

Now so had everything else.
