Chapter 3 - WHAT RYAN KNEW

Ryan Carter asked for a proffer through his attorney.

Not immunity.

Not confession deal yet.

He wanted to speak with investigators.

Emily was not present.

Good.

She did not need to hear his version first-hand.

Sheriff Cruz, financial crimes investigator, and prosecutor attended.

Ryan’s attorney made terms clear.

Ryan admitted tying Emily.

He did not call it restraint for safety.

He said:

“I was angry.”

That mattered.

He and Emily had argued because she wanted to drive to her father’s farmhouse.

Ryan believed Thomas had poisoned marriage against him.

Emily tried to leave.

Ryan grabbed keys.

She shoved his hand away.

He panicked and used nylon cargo strap hanging by mudroom to secure her wrists to doorframe.

For how long?

Seven minutes.

Seven too many.

Diane filmed after first minute.

Why did Ryan not stop her?

“She said we needed proof.”

Proof of what?

“That Emily was irrational.”

Did Ryan agree?

“At the time.”

There.

Abuse does not need conspiracy.

He made his own choice.

Then trust.

Had Ryan seen blue folder?

“Yes.”

Why tell Emily no?

“Because my mother told me it came from her father and was supposed to be reviewed privately.”

Why believe?

Diane said Thomas wanted Ryan to understand financial structure before becoming father.

That sounded plausible? Thomas and Ryan barely spoke.

Ryan admitted it should not have.

“When did folder arrive?”

Three weeks before video.

He opened.

Read.

Clause Eight.

Saw alternate protector Daniel Bennett.

He asked Diane:

“Isn’t he dead?”

Diane said old document and irrelevant.

Why keep?

She said attorney would collect.

Ryan left on desk.

Did he know value?

Roughly.

Emily told him trust was “family land.”

Not $48 million detail.

He learned from documents.

Did that change behavior?

Ryan said yes.

Not greed exactly.

Fear.

He realized if Emily left, he had no access to lifestyle supported partly through trust distributions.

Their house itself belonged to Emily personally, not trust.

But renovations, child planning, investment expectations all linked.

Ryan’s consulting business was struggling.

He had hidden debt.

$600,000 business loans.

Emily did not know.

There.

Motive personal.

He feared divorce.

So when Diane said Emily’s father was trying to make her “incapacity file” against Ryan? Wait.

Diane manipulated:

Thomas might try to take trust control if Emily becomes emotional.

Ryan must document Emily's instability to protect baby and himself.

Why would making Emily unstable help against Thomas? Confusing.

Diane told Ryan that if Emily was documented as unstable, Ryan could obtain temporary spousal guardianship and keep Thomas from exploiting Clause Eight. She framed it as defensive legal preparation.

Ryan believed partly.

Did he consult own lawyer?

No.

Why not?

Shame about debt.

Diane said family attorney handling.

That attorney?

Paul Voss.

Diane’s cousin.

He prepared nothing filed.

He later claimed he gave general information only.

Ryan never saw Daniel.

Never heard his voice knowingly.

Messages?

Diane often said “our advisor.”

Ryan assumed lawyer.

Then the marina photo.

Ryan recognized himself.

Age fifteen.

Why with Daniel?

He remembered man named David Hale.

A friend of Diane’s from Florida.

They met several times.

Ryan never knew Bennett surname.

Thomas stared when told later.

Daniel had been in Ryan’s life before Emily.

Not as uncle.

As family friend.

He taught Ryan sailing.

Attended high school graduation quietly.

Stopped appearing after Ryan college.

Then reappeared indirectly as “advisor.”

Ryan had been groomed too.

But did he know introduction to Emily was arranged?

He said no.

At Bennett gala, Diane encouraged attendance.

“She said there would be investors.”

She introduced him to event consultant who introduced Emily.

Ryan liked Emily genuinely.

Their relationship became real.

Diane encouraged.

Too much perhaps.

But Ryan did not know plan.

Evidence?

Messages from Diane to Daniel after first date:

It worked. He likes her.

Daniel:

Good. Let it be real.

That chilled everyone.

Let it be real.

The conspiracy did not fake love.

It exploited it.

Daniel wanted Ryan married into Bennett line.

Diane facilitated.

Ryan unaware initially.

When did he begin suspecting something?

Two years into marriage.

Diane asked questions about trust.

Ryan told her stop.

She said:

“Your future child deserves protection.”

He dismissed.

Then six months before restraint, his business debt worsened.

Diane offered help.

She paid $200,000 through loan.

In exchange?

No written condition.

But she began giving “estate advice.”

Ryan became dependent.

Then blue folder.

Then Emily wanted separation? Had she? The user doesn't say. Let's make she had started questioning marriage but not separated yet.

Emily had told Ryan she wanted financial transparency and independent counseling.

He feared exposure of debt.

He grew controlling.

Tracked car location.

Took keys during arguments.

Read messages with Thomas.

Not all Diane's doing.

He admitted.

Sheriff asked:

“Did you ever intend to take control of the trust?”

Ryan said:

“I wanted enough control to stop Emily from leaving.”

There.

Not company scheme perhaps.

Still.

“What does that mean?”

“I thought if she was declared temporarily unable to make decisions, maybe I could get time.”

Time.

Again.

The favorite word before control.

He had googled emergency guardianship.

Spousal medical authority.

Trust incapacity.

He never filed.

Why?

He knew it was wrong? Partly.

And Diane kept pushing more aggressively.

Messages:

Diane: You need evaluation documented.

Ryan: She’s pregnant, not crazy.

Diane: Pregnancy is why people will believe stress.

Ryan: Stop.

That helped him.

Then later he tied her anyway.

His own escalation.

Diane filmed.

Ryan told her stop filming after two minutes? Video only 23 sec. Full phone had 6 min footage. Police recovered.

In full recording, Ryan eventually untied Emily and said:

“This is insane.”

Diane replied:

“No, this is evidence.”

Ryan:

“Delete it.”

Diane:

“Not a chance.”

Important.

He knew restraint wrong after fact.

Still did.

Diane sent clip.

Then farmhouse fire began same night? In our ch1 yes same night after video. Did Diane tell Daniel that Thomas got video accidentally? She realized send error after maybe message delivered.

Phone logs:

Diane sent at 5:42 p.m.

At 5:46 she noticed contact mistake.

At 5:47 called Daniel.

At 5:51 Daniel’s burner pinged near Bennett county.

Fire at 6:34.

Could Daniel drive? If already nearby.

Message from Diane:

Wrong Thomas got it. Blue file visible.

Daniel:

I’ll handle farm.

There.

Strong conspiracy.

Ryan was not on thread.

Diane had direct Daniel contact under alias David H.

Why keep secret from son?

Because Daniel believed Ryan “too soft.”

Messages:

Daniel: Ryan is useful because he cares about her.

Diane: That makes him unreliable.

Daniel: Better. She trusts him.

Emily read later and cried.

She had been targeted through love.

Not fake necessarily.

Used.

Thomas felt guilt.

He had judged Ryan from start but for wrong reasons.

Ryan was abusive and deceptive about debt.

He also was not mastermind.

Two truths.

Then Daniel’s motive deepened.

Bayshore.

Samuel Bennett had accused Daniel of stealing two million.

Daniel said in old emails he did not steal.

He diverted funds to buy mineral rights in west field before family board approved.

Those rights later became enormously valuable due battery-mineral discovery? Could be too trendy. Maybe solar leases? Let's create mineral royalties.

Samuel took title in trust after discovering purchase used family money.

Daniel believed he created value and was robbed of ownership.

He wanted back what he considered his.

The trust now held rights generating millions yearly.

Daniel’s scheme:

Use Emily branch to trigger alternate protector role.

Challenge Thomas.

Argue Samuel intended Daniel to retain control.

Then direct trust litigation/settlements toward entity Daniel controlled.

Potentially extract management fees and favorable sale of assets.

Not simply steal $48m outright.

More plausible.

He needed:

original schedule naming him alternate.

destroy handwritten ledger proving Samuel wanted him removed.

evidence Thomas unfit/conflicted perhaps.

evidence Emily incapacitated.

Ryan as spouse to request emergency court action.

Diane to coordinate.

But Daniel was legally dead.

How activate?

He planned to “return” under story of witness protection/security? Or declare death mistaken, seek identity restoration. Risky but possible.

Messages showed:

Once original schedule is clean and Thomas is disqualified, I return with counsel.

Diane:

And Emily?

Daniel:

Temporary incapacity. Ryan petitions. Court sees chaos. We offer stability.

Stability.

Always.

Then Thomas.

How disqualify?

Daniel had evidence Thomas borrowed $300,000 from trust years ago? If true, conflict. Thomas had taken an authorized loan repaid. Daniel could frame.

He planned attack father as self-dealing.

Without ledger context, maybe.

Then Ryan's role after return:

spouse aligned with Daniel as protector.

But Ryan never agreed knowingly.

Diane assumed could persuade.

Maybe blackmail with business debt and restraint video.

Yes.

The video had dual purpose:

evidence Emily unstable.

leverage over Ryan—he is shown restraining pregnant wife.

If he balked, Diane could threaten release.

She sent to Thomas by mistake, losing control.

Investigators confronted Diane later.

She invoked rights.

No statement.

Daniel still fugitive.

Warrant.

Then Rachel remembered the farmhouse code origin.

The four-digit number was not random.

Samuel and Daniel’s father’s birthday.

Daniel sentimental.

He had given it to Diane years ago because they met at farmhouse secretly? When?

Old security installer logs showed new code created eight years earlier after break-in.

Thomas selected number.

Daniel present.

Diane not known.

But Daniel later gave.

Evidence message from Daniel to Diane found cloud backup:

Farm code still 0417. Thomas never changes anything.

Two years before death.

So Diane had code before Daniel faked death.

Long plan.

Then one bigger twist.

Why did Daniel fake death six years ago at all if plan not ready?

Because federal tax investigators had begun examining Bayshore entities.

Daniel feared indictment.

He staged death using warehouse fire.

Caleb Marsh’s death.

Was Caleb murdered?

Evidence eventually found Caleb entered warehouse intoxicated after shelter referral for day labor.

Daniel knew he was inside.

Fire intentionally set? Old fire report called electrical likely. Reopened now.

New forensic review found indications inconsistent with accidental origin but degraded.

Messages between Daniel and Diane before fire:

Diane: There’s a worker still inside.

Daniel: He’ll leave.

Diane: Daniel.

Daniel: I said he’ll leave.

Then after:

Diane: They found a body.

Daniel: Then it’s done.

Horrifying.

Not proof Daniel intentionally killed Caleb.

But he exploited death.

He placed belongings after? Timing.

Daniel became legally dead.

Identity Daniel Hale.

Diane helped finances.

Why?

What was relationship?

Lovers.

Emails.

Affair.

Diane was married to Robert Carter, Ryan’s father, then.

Robert died four years ago natural cancer.

Did he know?

No evidence.

Daniel and Diane’s affair lasted more than decade.

Ryan had unknowingly been guided by his mother’s lover.

Then Emily asked:

“Is Daniel Ryan’s father?”

Everyone froze.

Possible soap twist.

DNA? Ryan's birth predates affair maybe. Affair began later? Could be not. Let's avoid paternity cliché.

Diane met Daniel when Ryan was twelve.

So no.

Good.

But Ryan viewed Daniel as mentor.

Unknowingly connected.

Then prosecutors offered Ryan plea on restraint charge if he cooperated? Could be later.

Emily’s concern:

“I don’t want him excused because his mother manipulated him.”

Thomas answered:

“He won’t be.”

Good.

Ryan made his own choices.

The conspiracy did not erase abuse.

That became central.

Then Daniel made contact.

Not to police.

To Thomas.

A voicemail from blocked number.

“Tommy, you always did take Dad’s side.”

Thomas froze hearing brother’s voice after six years.

Daniel continued:

“You think I want Emily’s money. I want what Dad stole from me.”

Then:

“And if you want Rachel safe, stop helping the police.”

Thomas’s face changed.

Threat.

No ambiguity now.

Daniel had crossed from hidden architect to active danger.

Sheriff Cruz heard recording.

Protective measures increased.

Rachel moved from farmhouse temporarily.

Emily to secure location.

Ryan under no-contact.

Diane detained on conspiracy charges after evidence.

And Daniel Bennett, officially resurrected by DNA and bank records, became fugitive wanted for arson, fraud, identity crimes, conspiracy, and threat.

Thomas listened to voicemail again.

Not because he missed brother.

Because somewhere behind anger, he heard something else.

Background sound.

A train horn.

Then a church bell.

Rachel recognized.

“There’s only one place I know where those overlap like that.”

Thomas looked.

“The old Bennett mill.”

Abandoned twelve years.

Beside freight line.

May you like

Across from St. Luke’s chapel.

And beneath that mill, Samuel Bennett had kept one final archive Daniel might still believe existed.
