Chapter 2 - CLAIRE’S SISTER

Jonathan read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
Victoria remained seated across the library under police supervision.
Sophie was no longer in the room.
Rachel had taken her to the breakfast room with a child-services liaison after Detective Quinn asked that adult disclosures not happen in front of her.
Good.
There would be time.
Jonathan’s hands shook.
The letter said:
Victoria Vale had once been Victoria Hale.
Claire’s foster sister.
They had grown up together from ages eleven to seventeen in the same foster home.
Not biological sisters.
Not legal sisters after placement ended.
But Claire used the word sister because that was the relationship once.
Then something happened.
Claire did not explain everything in the first page.
She wrote:
If Victoria returns, she will tell you I ruined her life. In some ways, I did help expose what she was doing. Do not assume that makes every accusation she makes false.
That line mattered.
Even from the dead, Claire resisted simple villain stories.
Jonathan continued.
At twenty-three, Claire and Victoria worked for the same charitable housing foundation.
Claire discovered Victoria had been using client identities to open short-term credit accounts and route reimbursements.
Not millions.
Not criminal empire.
Enough to ruin vulnerable people.
Claire reported.
Victoria was charged with fraud and identity-related offenses.
She took a plea.
Served a short sentence.
Lost her job.
Blamed Claire.
Then no contact for years.
Claire built a life.
Met Jonathan.
Married.
Had Sophie.
Then Victoria appeared again shortly before Claire’s death.
Why?
She claimed she had changed.
Wanted reconciliation.
Claire did not tell Jonathan.
Why?
Shame.
Fear.
Old family complexity.
Maybe she thought she could handle it.
The letter said:
I made the mistake of treating Victoria as my private problem.
Jonathan lowered the page.
Rachel would later think about that sentence often.
Private problem.
How many harms survive because someone capable thinks:
I can manage this myself?
Then Claire described meetings.
Victoria wanted money.
Not blackmail exactly.
She said she needed help rebuilding.
Claire gave some.
Then more.
Then Victoria learned about Sophie.
Claire became afraid.
Not because Victoria threatened child physically.
Because she began saying:
“You got everything. I got nothing.”
And:
“Sophie could have been mine if people had chosen differently.”
What did that mean?
Another file in blue box.
Foster records.
Claire and Victoria had lived with foster parents Elaine and Robert Hale.
When Claire aged out, she later discovered Elaine had attempted to adopt Victoria but court denied due home concerns? This may be too tangled.
Maybe Sophie connection different.
Let's see.
Could Victoria have been Claire's egg donor? No.
We need reason isolation Sophie and mother's secret. Maybe Victoria believed Claire stole her identity/life, and later tried insert herself as replacement after death.
The darkest secret may involve Claire's death? We should avoid too quick. Perhaps Victoria had been at the accident scene before police, took key? But key remained? It disappeared maybe Marcus recovered? Need reconcile.
Claire warned because Victoria had tried to manipulate Sophie? Sophie was three at death, so maybe had met Victoria secretly once.
Journal says Victoria had approached daycare posing as aunt. Claire caught.
She obtained protective order? Jonathan unaware? Hard if legal order.
Maybe informal.
Then Claire’s car accident.
Any connection?
Police reopened maybe because Victoria was near road.
But not assume murder.
Letter says:
If something happens to me, look at the blue box, not because I think Victoria will kill me, but because I am afraid she will rewrite why she knew me.
Great.
The car crash had been ruled weather-related.
No evidence tampering.
We keep.
Then why did Victoria return after Claire died and marry Jonathan years later?
She changed surname back to Vale and approached through charity gala three years after Claire died.
Jonathan had no idea.
She knew who he was.
She staged meeting.
Then relationship over two years, marriage new.
Her secret was not murder but intentional infiltration under false identity/history to gain access to Sterling family/Sophie and possibly documents.
Why blue box?
Claire had evidence of Victoria's old fraud and letters suggesting fixation on becoming part of her family.
Then current financial motive maybe Claire had left a trust for Sophie with conditions; Victoria wanted access through Jonathan marriage.
Let's proceed.
The journal detailed:
Victoria had visited Claire at the Sterling mansion once while Jonathan traveling.
Sophie age three.
Claire wrote:
She looked at Sophie too long.
No crime.
Subjective.
Then:
Victoria asked whether Jonathan had updated his will.
That frightened Claire.
Why?
Because old fraud centered identities and beneficiary accounts.
Claire stopped payments.
Told Victoria not to return.
Victoria threatened:
“You cannot keep every good thing.”
Then Claire created blue box.
The key on necklace.
Then car accident two months later.
No evidence Victoria involved.
Claire’s last journal entry before accident:
Roads bad. Jonathan says cancel trip. Going anyway because I promised Sophie I’d get the music box repaired.
Mundane.
Crash investigation:
hydroplaning.
Guardrail.
No mechanical sabotage.
Detective Quinn later confirmed no reason yet to reopen death as homicide.
Jonathan was almost disappointed in a terrible way.
He wanted one crime to explain all.
Instead:
Claire died accidentally.
Victoria later exploited grief.
That was enough.
Then how did Victoria know blue box existed?
Claire told someone.
Marcus Cole.
Security chief.
The flash drive included an audio recording of Claire and Marcus.
Claire:
“If I die and she comes near Jonathan, you tell him.”
Marcus:
“I will.”
Jonathan stared.
Marcus had known Victoria’s identity.
For years.
He had watched Jonathan date her.
Marry her.
Why not tell?
Police brought Marcus in separate room.
He said:
“I thought Victoria had changed.”
Jonathan nearly attacked verbally.
“You promised Claire.”
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.”
Why?
After Claire’s death, Victoria contacted Marcus.
She knew about blue box.
She begged him:
do not tell Jonathan about old fraud unless she caused trouble.
She said Claire had always exaggerated her danger.
Marcus checked:
Victoria had completed sentence.
No new convictions.
Employed.
In therapy perhaps? We shouldn't cite private mental health without evidence. She showed references.
He made his own judgment.
Again.
Then years later when Victoria began dating Jonathan, Marcus recognized her.
He confronted.
She said:
“If you tell him, you destroy his chance to love again over crimes I already paid for.”
Marcus hesitated.
He thought:
Claire’s warning came from fear before accident, not prophecy.
He stayed silent.
Why cut camera?
Victoria told him she wanted to retrieve “old personal correspondence” from Claire’s room before renovation.
Marcus refused initially.
Then she said it contained humiliating foster records and private history.
She asked ten minutes privacy.
He disabled hallway camera.
That was his misconduct.
Did he know blue box?
Yes.
Did he know Victoria searching for it?
He suspected.
Did he help?
He claimed no.
But he failed Claire and Jonathan.
Then Sophie.
How did she find key?
Claire’s old music box.
The repaired one.
After Claire’s death, it was stored in attic.
Sophie found while Rachel helped sort keepsakes last month.
Inside false bottom:
the key.
Rachel had not seen Sophie pocket it.
Then Claire’s recorded message? Maybe flash drive contains video for Jonathan, not child. Could reveal more.
The flash drive had folders:
VICTORIA
MARCUS
TRUST
SOPHIE
The SOPHIE folder contained a video.
Claire sitting at desk.
Sophie age three maybe intended future.
She said:
“If Sophie is old enough to watch this, tell her none of this was her job.”
That line.
Rachel heard later and cried.
Claire continued:
“Victoria is not dangerous because she is angry. People are allowed anger. She becomes dangerous when she decides wanting a place in someone’s life gives her permission to manufacture one.”
There.
Then the trust.
Claire had established a maternal trust for Sophie.
Trustee:
independent bank.
Jonathan co-advisor but not sole controller.
No spouse of Jonathan could become trustee.
So Victoria could not access directly through marriage.
Then why care?
Maybe she wanted letters and proof of old fraud, not money.
But isolation Sophie?
Because Sophie had discovered Victoria in Claire’s room multiple times.
Victoria needed child discredited to keep searching.
The “darkest secret” could be that Victoria had been secretly impersonating Claire in letters? Hmm.
Let's unfold further later.
Police asked Jonathan:
“Did Victoria ever tell you she knew Claire?”
“No.”
“Did she know mansion layout before moving?”
He remembered:
first visit she knew where powder room was.
She said gala years ago.
No gala.
Then Victoria interview.
She admitted:
“I knew Claire.”
“Why hide?”
“Because Jonathan would never have dated me if he knew his dead wife despised me.”
True.
“Did you intend to meet him?”
“Yes.”
There.
Not accidental.
She had researched him.
Attended charity event because he would be there.
Why?
“At first I wanted to tell him my side.”
Then?
“He was kind.”
Then:
“I fell in love.”
Could be true.
Then why search box?
“I wanted Claire’s files destroyed.”
Why?
“They contained old criminal records and private foster history.”
Public criminal record already.
“What private history?”
Victoria stopped.
That was another secret.
Detective Quinn waited.
Victoria said:
“Claire was not Sophie’s biological mother.”
Jonathan stood.
The room froze.
Then Victoria smiled bitterly.
“That’s what she hid from you.”
Jonathan stared.
Impossible?
Sophie resembled Claire.
But adoption/egg donor/surrogacy perhaps.
Victoria continued:
May you like
“Claire used my eggs.”
Now the story changed again.
