Chương 8 - THE RECORDING

The recording was twenty-nine seconds long.

Rocco sent it through an attorney at 8:11 p.m.

Nobody touched the file until Agent Park’s forensic team copied it.

At 9:03, they played it in the Valente library.

Carlo’s voice.

Older recording quality.

Static.

A man breathing near the microphone.

Then:

“Paolo is a liability.”

Sienna stopped breathing.

Another voice.

Vittorio.

“What do you want done?”

Carlo answered:

“Remove him before Friday.”

The file ended.

Dante stared at the laptop.

Lucia covered her mouth.

Sienna felt hollow.

Remove him.

Exactly the word from the forged ledger.

Agent Park did not react emotionally.

Good.

“Do you recognize both voices?”

Dante answered.

“Yes.”

Lucia nodded.

“Yes.”

Sienna looked at her.

“You said Carlo refused.”

“He did.”

“Then why—”

“I don’t know.”

Agent Park raised one hand.

“We verify first.”

Evidence.

Again.

Sienna held onto that.

The recording went to audio forensics.

Rocco claimed Vittorio had sent him a copy years ago as insurance.

He had kept it.

Convenient.

Maybe true.

At ten, Rocco arrived at the estate.

Dante hated it.

Agent Park approved because the meeting would be recorded with consent.

Rocco entered without visible weapons and only one attorney.

He looked at Sienna.

“Congratulations.”

She stared.

“On the fake engagement?”

His eyebrows rose.

Dante’s face hardened.

Sienna continued.

“Everyone knows.”

Rocco almost smiled.

“Good.”

He sat.

Lucia remained standing.

“Why did you keep the recording?”

“Insurance.”

“Against Vittorio?”

“Against Carlo.”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

“My father.”

“Yes.”

Rocco looked at him.

“Your father was not a good man.”

“I know.”

That answer took some satisfaction away.

Rocco continued.

“But he did not kill Paolo.”

Sienna stared.

“You just gave us a recording where he orders it.”

“No.”

Rocco leaned back.

“I gave you a recording Vittorio gave me.”

Agent Park watched.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning I suspected it was fake.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Why send it now?”

“To make you verify.”

“Why not say that?”

“Would you believe me?”

No.

Probably not.

Rocco looked at Sienna.

“Paolo was useful to me alive.”

Her skin crawled.

“How?”

“He knew Valente routes.”

“He was preparing to testify.”

“Yes.”

“Against you too.”

“Yes.”

“You still wanted him alive?”

“For one more week.”

The answer was monstrous and honest.

“I wanted to know what he had given investigators.”

Sienna looked away.

Rocco continued.

“Vittorio wanted him dead immediately.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he offered me the information afterward.”

“What information?”

“The location of every copy Paolo made.”

Dante’s eyes hardened.

“In exchange for?”

“Peace with him personally.”

Lucia whispered, “He was building his own position.”

“Always.”

Rocco looked at Dante.

“Your father controlled Valente. I controlled Santoro. Vittorio controlled whatever existed between us by keeping both sides afraid.”

Sienna thought of the staged tea-shop attack.

“He sent men dressed to look Santoro.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Not before.”

“Why did you visit Marco?”

“Because an anonymous message told me the old man remembered the ledger.”

“Vittorio.”

“Likely.”

Sienna felt anger rise.

“So he used you to scare my father.”

Rocco shrugged.

The casualness enraged her.

“He has dementia.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Rocco looked at her.

“Do not confuse my usefulness tonight with goodness.”

That silenced her.

At least he knew.

Agent Park asked:

“Where is Vittorio now?”

Rocco smiled faintly.

“If I knew, would I tell you?”

“Yes,” Sienna said.

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you came here.”

Rocco’s smile disappeared.

She continued.

“You did not come because you suddenly respect evidence.”

Dante watched her.

“You came because Vittorio is leaving you exposed.”

Rocco said nothing.

“He has the old records. He knows your payments. He knows your people.”

Silence.

“He leaves the country, you become the easiest man to charge.”

Agent Park hid a smile.

Rocco stared.

Sienna leaned forward.

“So yes. You tell us.”

Dante’s mouth shifted.

Rocco exhaled.

“Warehouse near Calumet Harbor.”

Agent Park stood.

“Address.”

Rocco gave it.

Federal teams moved.

Dante stayed.

Sienna noticed the effort.

Every instinct in him wanted to go.

He did not.

That was growth too.

At 11:24, forensics called.

The recording had been manipulated.

Carlo’s first sentence came from one tape.

“Remove him before Friday” came from another conversation.

Spliced.

Sienna closed her eyes.

Relief felt strange.

Carlo remained guilty of many things.

Not this.

Dante sat.

Lucia cried.

Quietly.

Rocco looked almost bored.

“I told you.”

Sienna turned.

“You could have told us without making us listen.”

“Pain improves attention.”

“That is a terrible philosophy.”

“It has served my family.”

“Look how well that went.”

Dante coughed once.

Rocco glared.

At midnight, Agent Park called again.

Warehouse empty.

Vittorio gone.

But agents found documents.

Passports.

Cash.

Two phones.

One hard drive.

And a photograph.

Lucia tied to a chair.

Timestamped fifteen minutes earlier.

Everyone looked at her.

She stood in front of them.

Alive.

Sienna frowned.

“Then who—”

Agent Park sent the image.

Not Lucia.

Someone made to look like her.

Silver wig.

Similar coat.

A decoy.

Vittorio had staged an abduction that had not happened.

Why?

Dante understood first.

“He wants us away from the estate.”

Security alarms sounded.

One.

Then another.

The library lights died.

Rocco stood.

Dante pulled Sienna behind the stone wall beside the fireplace.

She immediately said, “Do not—”

“Armor.”

Right.

Gunfire cracked outside.

Not inside.

Security perimeter.

Tomas’s voice came through the emergency radio.

“West gate breach. Three vehicles.”

Dante looked at Sienna.

“Safe room.”

She opened her mouth.

He added:

“Do you want to go?”

Better.

“Yes.”

He moved with her.

Lucia came too.

Rocco swore.

“No one invited you,” Dante said.

“I am not standing in a hallway during a Valente coup.”

Fair.

They reached the reinforced basement room.

Agent Park’s team was en route.

Security cameras showed men entering the west grounds.

Not Santoro.

Valente.

Employees.

Current guards who had switched loyalty.

Vittorio had been inside the structure for decades.

Of course he had people.

Dante watched feeds.

His face was cold.

Sienna watched him.

“You want to go upstairs.”

“Yes.”

“Will you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Vittorio wants me outside this room, giving him what he wants is bad strategy.”

She almost smiled.

“Look at you.”

“Do not sound surprised.”

“I am.”

Lucia sat.

Her hands trembled.

Sienna crouched beside her.

“Okay?”

“No.”

Honest.

Then Lucia looked at her.

“I like you.”

Sienna blinked.

“Interesting time.”

“I want it recorded in case we die.”

“Lucia.”

“I’m serious.”

Dante closed his eyes.

“Mother.”

Lucia ignored him.

“You tell him no.”

Sienna stared.

“Frequently.”

“You make him ask.”

“Yes.”

“You do not act impressed by money.”

“I am impressed. I just resent it.”

Lucia laughed despite herself.

Then became serious.

“You would be good for him.”

Sienna’s face heated.

“Absolutely not discussing this during a siege.”

Dante looked offended.

“Agreed.”

Lucia smiled.

“You see?”

Another burst of gunfire outside.

Sienna pointed upward.

“People are shooting.”

Lucia shrugged.

“I have survived worse dinners.”

Rocco laughed.

Everyone stared at him.

“What?”

“This is the first enjoyable Valente evening I’ve had in thirty years.”

Sienna hated him.

Then the camera feed changed.

A man entered the main foyer.

Vittorio.

Alive.

Calm.

Unarmed.

He looked directly into the security camera.

Then held up a phone.

Dante’s rang.

He answered on speaker.

“Uncle.”

Vittorio’s voice came through.

“I want the ledger.”

“No.”

“And the woman.”

Dante’s face became ice.

Sienna leaned toward the phone.

“She has a name.”

Silence.

Then Vittorio laughed.

“Sienna.”

“What do you want with me?”

“You are the last loose end Paolo created.”

“Wrong.”

“What?”

“I’m the person with three copies of the ledger outside your reach.”

Vittorio went silent.

Sienna continued.

“And federal investigators already have them.”

Lucia looked at her.

Dante did too.

She had not told them Agent Park accepted the full copy earlier.

Smart.

Vittorio’s voice hardened.

“You stupid girl.”

“No.”

Sienna looked at the security monitor.

“I’m the waitress you thought nobody would believe.”

That landed.

Vittorio said nothing.

Then Agent Park’s voice came over Dante’s second phone.

“Federal teams are at the east gate.”

Vittorio heard.

For the first time, fear crossed his face on camera.

He turned.

Security men who had switched sides began moving toward exits.

Too late.

Federal vehicles entered.

No heroic shootout.

No Dante storming halls.

Men surrendered when consequences became real.

Vittorio reached the front steps before agents stopped him.

He looked back at the mansion.

Dante watched through the camera.

His uncle.

The man who raised him.

Sienna did not touch him.

Not until he held out his hand.

Then she took it.

His fingers closed around hers.

For ten seconds.

Nothing more.

Upstairs, Vittorio Valente was arrested.

Downstairs, Lucia watched Sienna’s hand in her son’s.

Her expression softened.

The fake engagement suddenly looked less fake than either of them wanted to admit.

When the all-clear finally came, Lucia stood.

Her knees shook.

Sienna offered an arm.

Lucia took it without pride.

At the basement door, she whispered:

“Anna would have liked you.”

Sienna’s throat tightened.

“She did.”

Lucia smiled.

“I meant the woman you became.”

That hurt more.

In a good way.

Sienna looked toward Dante.

May you like

He had heard.

For once, none of them tried to make the moment useful.
