Chapter 3 - ISABELLA’S SIDE OF THE RECORDING

Nine days before the wedding, Isabella disappeared for three hours.
Not missing.
She texted:
dress fitting.
The planner confirmed she never arrived.
There.
Old Leon would have sent men.
I did not.
Instead, I told Rebecca.
She said:
“Unless there is a specific safety reason, an adult is allowed to go somewhere without telling you.”
There.
True.
Even a suspected betrayer.
I hated law.
Good.
Then Isabella returned.
No panic.
She carried a garment bag.
“Alterations ran late.”
Lie.
There.
I knew because planner.
I said nothing.
Then she looked at me.
“You’re doing it again.”
“What?”
“Watching me like you’re waiting for a confession.”
There.
Interesting.
Maybe I was not as controlled as I thought.
Then she asked:
“Do you trust me?”
The question nearly made me laugh.
I said:
“I’m trying.”
There.
Not lie exactly.
Trying to understand.
Then Isabella’s phone rang.
Daniel.
She declined.
Interesting.
Then later she called someone from garden.
No audio.
Good.
No invasive expansion.
Then Rebecca found the anonymous PDF sender.
Not person.
A public Wi-Fi submission through counsel intake.
No attribution.
Fine.
Then Bellweather.
Independent forensic review under subpoena? Not yet. We only have internal corporate rights to vendor records.
Contract allowed audit.
Good.
Bellweather provided files reluctantly.
Draft voting agreement existed.
Its title:
CONTINGENCY EXERCISE — HOSTILE INCAPACITY SCENARIO.
There.
Ah.
Not actual intended transfer?
Bellweather said it was a tabletop exercise showing how fraud could exploit weak controls.
There.
Then why my signature pasted?
To simulate.
Why not watermark?
Bad practice.
Why did anonymous sender strip the contingency header?
There.
The PDF we got omitted first page.
Someone made it look sinister.
Again.
Evidence manipulation.
Then who?
Bellweather access logs:
Daniel.
Victor Salvi.
two analysts.
Isabella?
No account.
Then Daniel’s recorder purchase.
Could be part of “hostile continuity exercise”?
Maybe.
Bellweather had recommended testing whether private conversations could be compromised.
Did I authorize penetration test?
No.
Daniel claimed verbally I had asked for comprehensive security review months earlier.
I remembered saying:
Find the holes.
There.
Broad.
Dangerous.
Did that authorize bugging my study without consent?
No.
At least not clearly.
Then Isabella placing device.
Why?
Perhaps Daniel recruited her into a security test.
But her words:
After wedding, empire is ours.
He trusts me, darling.
That did not sound like test.
Then Bellweather provided one email from Daniel to Salvi:
Bride remains cooperative. Do not spook Leon before continuity activation.
There.
Now.
Rebecca stared.
“Bride?”
Could mean Isabella.
“Continuity activation?”
Marriage.
Then Salvi replied:
Once proxy is live, we can move him toward medical leave.
There.
My skin went cold.
Medical leave.
How?
Not poison.
Maybe board pressure using arrhythmia history.
Then another email:
He will not step back voluntarily.
There.
This looked like an internal coup.
Not theft.
Governance seizure.
Why?
Daniel believed I was a liability.
Maybe.
Then one more message:
Isabella needs reassurance. She thinks this is going too far.
There.
Important.
She was not necessarily equal architect.
Then I asked:
“Can we confront her now?”
Rebecca said:
“We can.”
No legal reason not.
Then why wait?
I did not want to hear.
There.
Cowardice.
I had faced guns more easily than betrayal.
Then Rachel called.
Sophie had nightmares.
Not about Isabella.
About “getting people in trouble.”
There.
My stomach dropped.
Children personalize adult consequences.
I asked Rachel:
“Can I speak to her?”
Rachel said yes.
Video call.
Sophie appeared.
Blue crayon gone.
She said:
“Is Miss Bella mad?”
“No.”
Truth? I did not know.
Then:
“You didn’t make anything happen.”
There.
Good.
“You found something and told the truth. Adults decide what happens next.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Are you mad?”
“At you? No.”
“At her.”
I paused.
“Yes.”
Honest.
Then:
“Do you still love her?”
Seven-year-olds.
I looked away.
“I don’t know what love is supposed to do with this yet.”
Too adult.
She frowned.
I simplified:
“I care about her. I’m also upset.”
There.
Two things.
Good.
Then Sophie said:
“Mom says people can be good and do bad things.”
Rachel in background:
“Sophie.”
I almost smiled.
“She’s right.”
Then after call, I went upstairs.
Isabella sat at vanity.
I closed door.
Unlocked.
Good.
Then put recorder on table.
Her face drained.
There.
No denial.
She looked at it.
Then at me.
“Sophie found it.”
Her hand flew to mouth.
Not:
you caught me.
Sophie.
Interesting.
“Did you know she saw you?”
“No.”
Then:
“Leon, I can explain.”
There.
I sat.
“Do it.”
No guards.
No gun on table.
Good.
Then Isabella started crying.
Not useful by itself.
She said:
“Daniel told me it was a security test.”
There.
Possible.
I said nothing.
Then:
“At first.”
There.
Key.
“What changed?”
She looked down.
“After your arrhythmia.”
There.
Daniel became obsessed with succession.
He believed board would fracture if I became incapacitated.
True.
Then he told Isabella:
once married, she and Daniel could stabilize family office if I was medically unable.
Plausible.
Then:
“Salvi said you were getting worse.”
There.
False?
My cardiologist said stable.
Then Isabella said Daniel showed her:
edited medical summaries,
examples of impulsive deals,
security incidents.
Some real.
some framed.
Then Daniel told her:
if I refused to step back, they needed evidence of instability and criminal exposure to force board action.
There.
The recorder.
Conversations.
Not to steal accounts?
“To document you.”
There.
Then what about:
After wedding, empire is ours.
Isabella covered face.
“That sounds—”
“It sounds exactly like what you said.”
“Yes.”
Good.
No denial.
Then she said:
“I was talking to Daniel.”
There.
Sophie right.
Then:
“He kept saying after the wedding we would be the only people who could hold everything together.”
There.
“And darling?”
Silence.
Isabella stared.
Then:
“I wasn’t talking to Daniel.”
There.
My body went cold again.
“Who?”
“Victor Salvi.”
There.
Not lover?
I asked.
“Are you sleeping with him?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Then why darling?
She looked ashamed.
“Because he calls me that. I started saying it back because he liked it.”
There.
Manipulation?
Maybe.
Then:
“Did you love him?”
“No.”
“Did you plan to marry me and control my companies with him?”
Isabella took a long breath.
“At first, no.”
There.
Then:
“Later?”
“I thought if you were forced out for a while, Daniel would run the companies, I would handle the family side, and you would finally stop.”
There.
Stop what?
“Everything.”
Crime.
violence.
obsession.
control.
There.
She wanted to save me by removing me.
Again.
Protection without consent.
Then:
“You were recording crimes?”
“Yes.”
There.
Now her motive complicated.
Not simply theft.
Then:
“Why say accounts, territory, names?”
“Salvi talks like that.”
Not good enough.
She admitted:
power seduced her.
There.
Good.
She had begun imagining being the person others deferred to.
Not innocent.
Then I asked:
“Was there a plan to harm me physically?”
“No.”
Immediate.
“Medication?”
“No.”
“Stage incapacity?”
She hesitated.
There.
“Daniel talked about using your cardiology history and stress episodes.”
Not poisoning.
Good.
“False medical evidence?”
“I don’t know.”
There.
Then:
“Did you see forged documents?”
She had seen the voting draft.
Daniel said it was a contingency tool.
She did not know anonymous PDF existed.
Then:
“Were you going to sign anything on my behalf?”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you access my accounts?”
“No.”
Forensics later could confirm.
Then I asked the hardest:
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She laughed through tears.
“Because you scare people.”
There.
Silence.
Then:
“You scare me when you’re angry.”
There.
I had never hit her.
Did that mean safe?
No.
I had:
punched walls,
ended careers,
had men removed from rooms,
made threats in front of her.
There.
Fear.
Then Isabella said:
“Daniel told me if I warned you, you’d destroy everyone before hearing anything.”
Would I?
Old me.
Maybe.
There.
Then:
“I kept telling myself I was collecting proof so someone could stop you.”
Then:
“I also liked being trusted by both sides.”
There.
Honest.
Then I asked:
“Do you want to marry me?”
She cried harder.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt most.
Because maybe true.
Love did not erase betrayal.
Then:
“Wedding is postponed.”
Her face crumpled.
Not canceled yet.
Why?
Because I was not making lifelong decisions in one night.
Good.
Then:
“You’re leaving the estate tonight.”
She nodded.
No guards dragging.
She packed with a lawyer present? Better Rebecca arranged independent hotel and counsel because she might be witness/participant.
Good.
Then Isabella asked:
“Are you going to kill Daniel?”
There.
Old reputation.
I looked at her.
“No.”
She studied me as if unsure.
That was its own indictment.
Then:
“What are you going to do?”
“Find out exactly what happened.”
There.
“And then?”
“Use systems I should have used before.”
She almost smiled.
“Rebecca got to you.”
Maybe.
Then I said:
“Sophie is not to be contacted.”
“I would never—”
“Good.”
Specific.
Then Isabella left.
No kiss.
No final embrace.
The house became quiet.
At midnight, Daniel texted:
Bella says wedding postponed. What happened?
There.
He did not know she had confessed.
I stared.
Then gave the phone to Rebecca.
No trap.
No fake messages.
Preserve.
May you like
The wedding was no longer leverage.
The truth could proceed without an altar.
