Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN INSIDE THE BOX

Elise Brooks had been a magician before Ava was born.

Not famous.

Not Julian famous, anyway.

She preferred close-up work:

rings,

coins,

cards,

small miracles performed three feet from skeptical people.

Then Ava arrived.

Elise left touring.

Helped build props.

Managed books.

Raised a daughter who believed trapdoors were normal furniture.

After Julian died, she stopped performing altogether.

That history mattered because Celia Raines had made one serious mistake.

She locked Elise inside a dressing room with a vanity mirror.

Never lock a magician in a room with a mirror.

---

Nora’s team traced the video’s metadata poorly.

Celia had stripped location data.

The room itself offered clues:

green wall paint,

a star-shaped bulb guard,

old brass numbers.

Ava recognized none.

Elise did.

She sent the clue herself.

Twenty-eight minutes after the video, Ava received a text from her mother’s phone.

Only four words:

MIRROR SAYS MAJESTIC 4B

Then the phone went dark again.

Nora searched.

The Majestic Theatre Annex, closed for renovation, sat eleven blocks from the Bellini Grand.

Room 4B was an old dressing room.

Good.

No intuition miracle.

A clue.

---

Police established a perimeter.

Celia had demanded the notebook.

They would not bring original evidence.

Obviously.

A forensic duplicate could be used if investigators chose a controlled exchange.

But Ava was not automatically going inside.

Nora said:

“Celia wants you. That does not make you the negotiator.”

Ava nodded.

“I know.”

Dante stood across the command van.

He had arrived because Rocco was now a direct threat and because police wanted information about his uncle’s behavior.

Dean stood behind him.

Quiet.

For once.

Ava looked at Dante.

He did not tell her not to go.

Good.

That almost made it harder.

---

Celia called.

Nora connected audio under warrant and consent.

“Ava.”

“Mom sent the location.”

A pause.

Celia sounded almost proud.

“Elise always was better than Julian gave her credit for.”

Ava’s anger sharpened.

“Unlock the door.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Rocco’s people are here.”

There.

Background noise.

A door slamming.

Maybe true.

“Where are you?”

“Basement level.”

“Is Mom hurt?”

“No.”

“Can she leave?”

“No.”

“Then she is a hostage.”

Silence.

Celia whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Ava closed her eyes.

“Sorry is not a key.”

Good.

---

Celia wanted Ava to bring the notebook to the stage door.

No police.

Ava laughed.

“You know me better than that.”

“Yes.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because I know Dante better than you do.”

Ava looked at him.

Celia continued:

“He’ll come if you do.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“What does Rocco want with him?”

“Control of the archive trust. If Dante signs a transfer authorization, Rocco can move the last offshore holdings before the warrants freeze them.”

Dante whispered:

“Not anymore.”

Jae? We haven't introduced legal chief. Could say after vault search, trustee froze changes. Good.

He told Nora:

“The trustee locked all transfers yesterday.”

Celia heard through Ava’s speaker? Better Ava had earpiece not speaker. Let's keep Ava repeats:

“The archive trust is frozen.”

Silence.

Then Celia swore.

Good.

Maybe she truly did not know.

---

A crashing sound came through line.

Elise shouted:

“CELIA!”

Then another voice.

Male.

Older.

Rocco.

“Give me the phone.”

The line ended.

Everything changed.

Now Celia may no longer control the scene.

Police tactical team moved.

Nora told Ava:

“You stay here.”

Ava looked at the theater floor plan.

Then at one old blueprint from the city archive.

Majestic Theatre Annex had been renovated three times.

One thing caught her eye.

A service tunnel connected Room 4B to the old quick-change corridor behind the stage.

Elise would know how to use it if she could get out.

Ava pointed.

“My mother sent the room number because she knows the tunnel.”

Nora looked.

“Can she access it from inside?”

“Maybe through the vanity wall.”

“Maybe is not enough.”

“No.”

Good.

The tactical commander took the information.

Professional use.

Not Ava running in.

---

Then Ava’s phone buzzed again.

A photograph.

Elise standing beside Rocco Bellini.

Rocco held no visible weapon.

Celia stood behind them.

All alive.

Caption:

AVA. STAGE. TEN MINUTES. OR THE OLD WOMAN LEARNS HOW LITTLE MAGIC CHANGES GRAVITY.

Threat to throw her from stage? Old theater has fly tower perhaps. Clear enough.

Dante saw Ava’s face.

“What?”

She showed him.

Dean’s expression changed.

Dante said:

“I go.”

Ava turned.

“No.”

“He wants me.”

“He wants control.”

“I can buy time.”

Ava stepped closer.

“This is exactly what my father wrote about.”

Dante stopped.

“You deciding danger is yours because you think you can absorb it.”

His jaw tightened.

“Your mother—”

“My mother is not improved by adding you as a hostage.”

Good.

Nora said:

“Ava is right.”

Dean looked pained by agreeing.

---

Police decided on controlled contact.

Dante would appear at the front stage entrance under surveillance if Rocco moved Elise into visible range.

No entry beyond marked line.

Ava would speak over phone only.

That was the plan.

Plans are illusions too.

They depend on people hitting marks.

---

Dante walked onto the dark Majestic stage at 11:42 p.m.

Work lights glowed overhead.

Police watched through hidden angles and remote cameras.

Ava stayed in the command area backstage with Nora.

Dean shadowed Dante from cover despite being told not to crowd.

Some habits survived.

Dante called:

“Rocco.”

His uncle emerged onto the opposite balcony.

Older than the gala photograph.

Thin.

Cancer visible in the face.

Rocco held Elise by the arm.

Not roughly.

Enough.

Celia stood behind them.

Her hands were empty.

At least visibly.

Rocco smiled.

“Minchia. Lorenzo’s boy finally learned theater.”

Dante’s voice was cold.

“Let her go.”

“Bring me the notebook.”

“It’s evidence.”

“Bring me Ava.”

“No.”

Ava heard through feed.

Good answer.

Rocco’s smile faded.

“You always were sentimental.”

Dante said:

“No. I’m tired.”

That landed.

---

Rocco demanded the trust authorization.

Dante told him it was frozen.

Rocco turned to Celia.

“You said he could move it.”

Celia looked pale.

“I said the system used him.”

“You said—”

Their argument opened space.

Elise used it.

Her right hand slipped from Rocco’s grip.

She twisted his thumb exactly the way Julian taught her forty years earlier.

Rocco shouted.

Elise ran.

Not toward stairs.

Toward the vanity corridor.

Good.

Celia moved too.

But instead of stopping Elise, she shoved Rocco backward.

There.

Sides changed again.

---

Ava saw her mother disappear behind a wall panel.

The quick-change corridor.

Police moved.

Rocco pulled a gun from beneath his coat.

Dante dropped behind a set piece.

Dean surged onto the stage.

One shot cracked.

It hit scenery.

No one injured.

Police shouted commands.

Rocco retreated toward the fly stairs.

Celia ran the opposite way.

Elise crawled through the service tunnel.

Ava stayed where told for seven unbearable seconds.

Then an officer yelled:

“Civilian coming out!”

Elise emerged behind the command area.

Ava ran to her.

This time allowed.

She grabbed her mother.

Elise said:

“I told you not to do anything stupid.”

Ava started laughing and crying simultaneously.

“You got kidnapped by your former assistant.”

“Not my best week.”

Good.

---

On stage, Rocco reached the upper catwalk.

Dante remained behind cover.

Dean beside him.

Police climbed from both ends.

Rocco shouted down:

“You think prison changes what you are?”

Dante looked up.

“No.”

Interesting answer.

Rocco laughed.

Then Dante continued:

“But it may change what I do.”

Ava heard through the feed.

Not a hero speech.

Good.

Rocco aimed downward.

Before he could fire, Celia appeared behind him.

She had taken a maintenance route.

She struck his wrist with a metal rigging wrench.

The gun fell through the safety net below.

Police tackled Rocco.

Celia raised both hands.

For half a second, it looked over.

Then she ran.

Of course.

---

Celia vanished into the backstage maze.

A magician’s assistant in a theater she had worked decades ago.

Police spread.

Ava knew the routes better than most.

Nora saw her looking at the plan.

“No.”

“I’m not going.”

Good.

Ava pointed.

“She’ll avoid exits. She’ll use a costume trunk or false wall until perimeter relaxes.”

Nora nodded to tactical lead.

They searched hiding spaces instead of doors.

Three minutes later, an officer found a wardrobe crate with a false back.

Empty.

Ava frowned.

“Second back.”

The phrase.

Always.

She looked at the crate.

A second panel could hide another compartment.

Police opened only after bomb check.

Inside:

Celia.

Curled in a cavity barely wider than her shoulders.

Breathing hard.

Crying.

She did not resist arrest.

---

At the hospital, Elise had bruising on her wrist and nothing worse.

Dante had a splinter cut on his cheek from the shot hitting scenery.

Dean had a torn suit and the emotional condition of a man personally betrayed by theater.

Miles, from home, texted Ava:

PLEASE TELL DEAN MAGIC IS SAFE

Ava replied:

NOT TODAY

---

Rocco was hospitalized under guard for chest pain related to his cancer.

Celia was booked after questioning with counsel.

Wes Talbot remained in custody.

No one disappeared.

That mattered.

---

At three in the morning, Ava sat in the hospital cafeteria with Dante.

Elise slept upstairs.

Dean guarded the hallway despite two police officers already there.

Dante held a paper cup of coffee.

Ava said:

“You were going to walk in.”

“Yes.”

“Even after everything.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because your mother was there.”

“That is not enough.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“I still think love makes sacrifice feel simpler than asking.”

There.

Self-awareness without cure.

Good.

Ava touched the cut on his cheek only after asking with her eyes.

He leaned slightly closer.

Permission.

Small.

---

“Celia hit Rocco,” Dante said.

“Yes.”

“Does that help her?”

“In court?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know.”

Good.

“Emotionally?”

Ava thought.

“No.”

Then:

“Maybe later.”

Celia had protected Elise in the final seconds.

Also trapped her.

Helped abduct Dante.

Covered a fire.

Ran illegal freight.

One good act did not erase others.

One bad act did not make every past affection fake.

Adults were exhausting.

---

Dante said:

“I am sorry I lied to you.”

Ava looked at him.

“You already said that.”

“I know.”

“Then stop repeating apologies until I make you feel better.”

His mouth moved.

“You’re difficult.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

Then the smile disappeared.

“What do you want from me?”

Ava considered.

“Truth before romance.”

His eyes held hers.

“That means there might be romance.”

“Do not ruin it.”

He laughed quietly.

Good.

Then Ava took his coffee.

Drank it.

Made a face.

“Terrible.”

“It’s hospital coffee.”

“You’re rich. Fix something useful.”

He looked offended.

For the first time since the gala, the darkness around them loosened.

May you like

Not gone.

Just no longer the only thing in the room.
