Chapter 2 - DO NOT LET NATHAN MARK HER

Grace arrived at the estate at six twenty the next morning because she had not slept.

Not for work.

She had called North Star Staffing at 5:41 and said she would not report until the Bellini family explained why her daughter’s name appeared in a private file before Rosie could sit up by herself.

Good.

Matteo agreed.

No docking pay.

No threats.

No “contract.”

She came as a mother.

Rosie stayed with Grace’s neighbor Denise? We must not reuse Denise from prior story. New neighbor "Mrs. Patel." Grace left Rosie with Mina Patel, a retired teacher she trusted.

Good.

No child in meeting.

Clara remained upstairs with governess.

The study doors were open.

Grace noticed.

She did not care.

Matteo had printed the recovered index.

One line.

MERCER, ROSALIE - MIRROR MATCH 94.2%.

NOT BLOOD.

KESSLER CONFIRMED.

DO NOT LET NATHAN MARK HER.

Grace placed both palms on desk.

“What does mirror match mean?”

Matteo looked at Daniel.

Daniel said:

“I don’t know.”

Grace’s voice sharpened.

“You worked for his father.”

“Yes.”

“You know Kessler.”

“Yes.”

“You know security.”

“Yes.”

“And you don’t know.”

“I know one older program called visual substitution.”

Matteo turned.

“What?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“There were adult doubles.”

Silence.

Grace stared.

“For what?”

Daniel answered.

“Public events during kidnapping threats. Motorcades. hotel arrivals. sometimes staged exits.”

Matteo stood.

“My father used decoys.”

“Yes.”

“I knew that.”

Grace looked at him.

He did not pretend clean.

“My father did. I used adult decoys twice in my twenties.”

Good.

Not shocking.

“What about children?” she asked.

Matteo looked at Daniel.

Daniel said:

“I never saw children used.”

“That is not answer.”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I saw a file category called juvenile mirror contingency.”

Matteo’s face went cold.

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

“You said nothing.”

“It was marked inactive.”

“By who?”

“Your father.”

“Then why did Adriana have a file?”

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.”

Grace stepped away.

“Every sentence here is men saying they don’t know while my daughter has a scar somebody’s dead wife predicted.”

That landed.

Matteo said:

“You’re right.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Stop agreeing like it fixes anything.”

“It doesn’t.”

Good.

He called Laura? Need new counsel maybe "Evelyn Hart", family attorney. Let's introduce "Miriam Cole", outside counsel.

Miriam Cole arrived at seven ten.

Forty-eight.

Former federal prosecutor.

No family relationship.

Matteo gave her access to archive.

Grace said:

“I want my own lawyer.”

Good.

Miriam nodded.

“You should.”

Matteo opened mouth.

Grace looked.

He closed it.

No offering his lawyer.

She called Westchester Legal Aid? But she has income maybe qualifies? Could retain through advocate. Let's use "Nora Feld", employment/family attorney recommended by a women’s resource center, and Grace pays initial consult; Matteo later may be liable but not control. For now Nora joins by phone.

Nora said:

“Do not sign confidentiality. Do not provide Rosie’s medical records directly to Bellini counsel. We can subpoena or authorize specific sharing.”

Good.

Grace breathed easier.

Then the archive search began.

Not in front of her only.

With copies to her lawyer where Rosie appeared.

Adriana’s index had 23 “mirror” entries.

All children.

Ages six months to nine years.

Each paired with a child from one of three wealthy families connected to organized crime or high-risk business.

Similarity percentages.

Hair.

Eye color.

facial proportions.

height trajectory estimates.

distinguishing marks.

Grace went pale.

“This is trafficking.”

Miriam said:

“Not necessarily.”

Grace glared.

“Children cataloged to resemble rich children.”

“I am not minimizing. I am separating what we know from what we fear.”

Good.

“Do we know any child was moved?”

“No.”

“Used?”

“No.”

“Photographed without consent?”

Likely, but records to verify.

The paired entry for Clara:

BELLINI, CLARA - PRINCIPAL.

MERCER, ROSALIE - MIRROR.

MATCH 94.2%.

SOURCE: ST. CATHERINE INFANT OUTREACH.

KESSLER REVIEW.

Grace sat.

“Infant outreach.”

She remembered.

After Rosie’s breathing scare, St. Catherine’s had offered free follow-up because Grace and Owen’s insurance was weak.

Home nurse.

Development photos.

Measurements.

“Those people photographed her.”

“Yes.”

“I signed.”

Nora’s voice from speaker:

“You signed medical follow-up, not necessarily security matching. We need consent forms.”

Good.

Matteo’s hands closed.

His family charity had funded St. Catherine’s outreach.

Adriana had sat board.

His money.

Again.

Grace looked at him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Can you prove?”

“No.”

Good.

Then they found Kessler’s note.

MIRROR CANDIDATE HAS NATURAL EYE/CURL MATCH.

BROW MARK ABSENT.

RECOMMEND IDENTIFIER ALIGNMENT IF ACTIVATED.

Grace stopped breathing.

“Identifier alignment.”

Matteo looked sick.

Miriam said:

“We need medical expert before interpreting.”

Grace’s voice shook.

“My daughter did not have that crescent at birth.”

There.

She opened phone.

Baby photos.

Newborn Rosie.

No scar.

Four months.

No scar.

Six months after St. Catherine overnight observation.

A red healing mark near left eyebrow.

The same curve Clara had naturally from a toddler fall at age two.

Matteo stared.

“Clara’s mark wasn’t birthmark?”

“No.”

He remembered.

She had fallen against a marble side table at two.

Two stitches.

Adriana cried more than child.

Kessler had treated her.

Of course.

He had photograph.

He knew exact mark.

Grace put phone down.

“They cut my baby.”

Nora said:

“We cannot conclude mechanism yet.”

Grace cried.

Not loud.

Anger.

“What else do you call a mark somebody recommended before it appeared?”

Matteo had no answer.

Miriam said:

“We document. We get independent pediatric dermatologist to examine. We obtain St. Catherine records.”

Good.

Not revenge.

The next file was worse emotionally.

Adriana’s note:

NATHAN SAYS IDENTIFIER IS NONINVASIVE. I TOLD HIM NO.

VITTORIO AUTHORIZATION MAY STILL STAND.

OWEN WILL REMOVE CAMERA FEED TONIGHT.

IF THEY TOUCH MERCER CHILD, I GO OUTSIDE FAMILY.

Vittorio.

Matteo’s father.

Dead six years.

He had authorized child mirror program before death.

But Rosie was born after Vittorio died.

“Authorization may still stand.”

Legacy order.

Somebody continued.

Kessler.

Who else?

Owen will remove camera feed tonight.

Grace stared.

“My husband.”

Daniel said quietly:

“He was helping Adriana.”

Grace turned.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You found invoices yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“Who did he think he was working for?”

“We need records.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Then Clara appeared at open door.

Nobody had heard her.

Matteo stood.

“Clara.”

She looked at Grace’s face.

“Is Rosie okay?”

Grace wiped tears.

“Yes.”

“Are you?”

Grace considered.

“No.”

Good.

Clara looked at Matteo.

“Did I do something?”

His chest hurt.

“No.”

“Because I said she looks like me.”

“No.”

“Then why everyone is mad?”

Matteo walked to her.

Kneeled.

He had learned from fathers? It's okay.

“Some adults made choices involving Rosie without Grace knowing.”

“Bad choices?”

“Yes.”

“About looking like me?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

She touched her eyebrow.

“Did they give her my scar?”

Grace closed eyes.

Children connect fast.

Matteo said:

“We don’t know exactly.”

Good.

Clara looked frightened.

“Can they give me her things?”

“What?”

“Make me look like her too?”

“No.”

Fast.

Then he corrected certainty.

“No one is allowed to change your body to make you look like anyone. Same for Rosie.”

Clara nodded.

Good.

“Can I see her?”

“Not today unless Grace says.”

Grace looked at child.

Clara was not cause.

“Later.”

Clara relaxed slightly.

Then:

“I want to give her my rabbit.”

Grace almost smiled.

“She has one.”

“Oh.”

Important problem solved.

Clara went upstairs.

Matteo returned to desk.

Miriam had found another file.

Adriana had recorded audio memo four days before her death.

Her voice filled the study.

Alive.

Matteo’s face broke before first sentence.

“If anyone finds this because I failed to stop Nathan, start with the mirrors, not my death.”

Everyone went still.

Adriana continued.

“My death is not part of this. I am recording because my surgery is next week and Matteo does not know half of what his father left behind.”

There.

Natural risk.

No murder mystery.

Good.

“I found the juvenile program in old Bellini security archives. Vittorio designed it after Clara’s kidnapping threat when she was a baby. It was supposed to identify potential visual decoys only if evacuation required confusing surveillance. It was never supposed to touch a child, move a child, or contact families.”

Matteo closed eyes.

Adriana continued.

“Nathan expanded it.”

There.

“He used hospital outreach records to build live profiles. He calls them readiness candidates. He added distinguishing marks. He ordered social histories. He asked whether guardians had debt, unstable housing, immigration problems, anything that made them easier to pressure.”

Grace’s face went white.

Adriana’s voice sharpened.

“That is not security. That is a list of children somebody believes can be borrowed.”

Silence.

Then:

“Owen Mercer found the camera routing. He is helping me copy everything. He does not know why his daughter is in the file yet.”

Grace covered mouth.

Owen had not known at first.

Adriana continued.

“I am going to tell him tonight.”

Audio ended.

Grace stared at speaker.

“That night.”

Daniel checked dates.

Four years ago.

June 18.

Owen’s final Bellini invoice was June 18.

He died three months later.

Adriana died eleven months later after complications from surgery? Wait opening says dead wife, three years since? Clara 7, mother death maybe three years. We said Adriana died three years ago, current Rosie 3, file when Rosie 4 months and Adriana died around 8 months later. Fine. "surgery next week" could be a cardiac surgery; she survives surgery but dies months later of embolism? Hmm. Let's set audio says surgery next week, perhaps she later died from complications 8 months after? Better not detail now. We can say her eventual death wasn't related as she said. Fine.

Grace whispered:

“Owen knew.”

“Yes,” Matteo said.

“And never told me.”

“Maybe he planned to.”

“Do not defend him.”

“I’m not.”

Good.

Then Nora said through speaker:

“Grace, stop for today if you want.”

Grace looked at files.

Twenty-three children.

Her daughter one.

“No.”

Then changed.

“Yes.”

Good.

Choice.

“I need Rosie.”

She stood.

Matteo did not stop.

At door, Grace turned.

“Mr. Bellini.”

“Yes.”

“If I quit, does this investigation continue?”

His face changed.

“Yes.”

“If I never bring Rosie back here?”

“Yes.”

“If I never speak to you again?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Grace nodded.

“Then I’m off the clock until I decide.”

“You are.”

She left.

Matteo watched the door close.

Then looked at Adriana’s line.

A list of children somebody believes can be borrowed.

His father had built the skeleton.

Nathan Kessler had added flesh.

And somewhere in the old Bellini archives was the rest of a program Matteo had inherited without asking enough questions.

He turned to Daniel.

“Preserve everything.”

Daniel nodded.

“No calls to Kessler.”

“Yes.”

“No one warns family.”

Daniel hesitated.

Matteo saw.

“What?”

“Raffaele.”

Matteo’s uncle.

His father’s younger brother.

Current head of Bellini Family Trust.

“What about him?”

Daniel looked at the old authorization codes.

“Vittorio never ran security medicine alone.”

Matteo’s blood turned cold.

“Who signed with him?”

Daniel opened another line.

SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION:

R. BELLINI.

Raffaele.

The man who had kissed Clara’s forehead at Adriana’s funeral.

May you like

The man who still chaired the trust controlling Clara’s inheritance.

And suddenly the resemblance between two little girls was no longer the only thing Matteo feared.
