Chapter 6 - The Man Dominic Trusted With Half His Empire.

Elias Bishop did not answer Dominic’s call.

That was good.

Dominic had only called once because federal agents asked him to.

A controlled contact.

No warning beyond what investigators wanted.

Bishop’s assistant said he was unavailable.

His office said he had left New York at seven.

His driver said Bishop dismissed him and took another car.

Everything pointed west.

Dominic sat in the federal operations room looking like he wanted to break furniture.

He did not.

Leah noticed.

She had no reason to be there except one:

Sofia’s clue.

Investigators wanted context.

She wanted Jonah found.

Matteo remained with Mr. Alvarez and a child-services advocate at a separate secure location.

Leah had insisted no Valenti safe house.

Good.

Dominic accepted.

He was learning no could survive his money.

An agent projected property records.

St. Brigid’s Retreat had closed after flood damage.

Moon House was one of four cabins.

Elias Bishop Holdings bought parcel eighteen months ago for “private redevelopment.”

No redevelopment permits.

Utilities remained active.

Security cameras installed.

Interesting.

“Why would Bishop buy it?” Leah asked.

Dominic answered:

“Money laundering? Safe storage? Personal use?”

“No guess.”

Agent said.

Good.

They had probable cause emerging through kidnapping connection and Hale statements.

Warrant requested.

Meanwhile traffic camera showed Sable SUV pass Delaware Water Gap exit.

Then vanish.

Could be retreat.

Could be diversion.

No assumptions.

Dominic’s phone vibrated.

Elias Bishop.

Everyone stopped.

Agent nodded.

Dominic answered on speaker.

“Elias.”

“Dominic.”

Bishop sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You’re alive.”

“Disappointed?”

“No.”

Good.

“Where are you?”

“Driving.”

“Where?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Not yet.”

Agent wrote.

Dominic said:

“You drugged me?”

“No.”

“Dante?”

“Yes.”

“On your order?”

“No.”

There.

“Then Sable.”

“Yes.”

“Why are you involved?”

Bishop breathed.

“Because your father made a promise.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“What promise?”

“To destroy the Meridian ledger.”

Silence.

Leah looked.

Dominic knew something?

“No,” he said.

Bishop continued.

“Vittorio Valenti promised Sable after the federal case.”

“Why would my father protect him?”

“To protect everyone named.”

There.

Old compromise.

“If ledger surfaced, politicians, judges, port officials, families. War.”

“So he agreed to destroy.”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He kept backup.”

Of course.

“Where?”

“Archive you were about to give federal investigators.”

That explained drugging.

Sable needed prevent.

“Why help Sable?”

Bishop said:

“I’m helping contain what your father failed to contain.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“I did not.”

“Your property.”

Silence.

Bishop’s control cracked.

“I didn’t know Dante would take the boy.”

“Do you know where he is?”

“Yes.”

Everyone froze.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Bishop hesitated.

“Moon House.”

There.

Federal agents moved before call ended.

Pennsylvania team already staged nearby once warrant approved.

Dominic said:

“Let him go.”

“I’m trying.”

“What does that mean?”

“Sable has him.”

“Then walk away.”

“If I walk away, Sable releases ledger.”

“And?”

“Half your empire collapses.”

Dominic’s face went still.

Leah watched.

There it was.

Choice.

Boy or empire.

Maybe too dramatic.

But real enough.

Dominic asked:

“What is in ledger about me?”

“Not you.”

“Then my father.”

“Yes.”

“Crimes?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

“Everyone.”

Dominic breathed.

“Then release it.”

Bishop went silent.

“Dominic.”

“You heard.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand a nine-year-old is being held so men can keep financial crimes private.”

Silence.

Good.

Bishop said:

“Your father would never—”

“My father is dead.”

There.

“Jonah isn’t.”

Leah’s throat tightened.

Bishop whispered:

“You’ll lose ports.”

“Maybe.”

“Judges.”

“Good.”

“Senator Vale.”

“Not mine.”

“Your protection agreements.”

Dominic looked at Leah.

“Then they were never protection.”

Good.

Agent gestured to keep talking.

Dominic asked:

“What does Sable want after key?”

“Ledger access and deletion of Valenti backup.”

“Can he access without phrase?”

“He has Jonah.”

“Does Jonah know?”

“We think.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Then why are you useful?”

“I control the property and old financial channel.”

“Can you get Jonah out?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I can create a diversion.”

Federal agents immediately wrote.

“No.”

Dominic said.

Bishop stopped.

“No private heroics.”

Leah almost smiled.

He looked at her when saying it.

Good.

“Do what agents tell you.”

Bishop laughed bitterly.

“You’ve changed.”

“Apparently.”

Then agent took over coordination through Dominic.

Bishop was instructed to keep Sable at property, not act, await signal.

Would he comply?

Unknown.

Then call dropped.

Tactical team entered perimeter.

No gunfire at first.

Cameras.

Two guards.

One surrendered.

One ran.

Caught.

Inside main cabin:

Bishop.

Hands visible.

No weapon.

Sable not there.

Jonah not there.

No.

Bishop had been used too.

He thought Sable at Moon House.

Dante moved him earlier through maintenance trail.

Again.

But Bishop provided map.

Old service road to abandoned quarry property.

Owned by trust linked to Sable.

Teams moved.

Leah waited.

Waiting was terrible.

She called Matteo.

He asked:

“Did they find boy?”

“Not yet.”

“Tell him Engine helped.”

“When they find him.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Then Matteo asked:

“Is laundry guy there?”

Leah looked at Dominic across room.

“Yes.”

“Tell him I want my train.”

“Police still have it.”

“I know. He looks rich. He can make them faster.”

Leah laughed.

“No.”

Dominic heard.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Matteo shouted through speaker:

“Engine!”

Dominic smiled.

“I’ll ask politely.”

“Good.”

Leah ended.

Normal.

Then agent shouted:

“Movement.”

Drone over quarry road spotted two vehicles.

One black SUV.

One van.

Thermal:

Multiple adults.

Small figure in van.

Teams converged.

Dante attempted to flee.

Vehicle blocked.

No cinematic shootout.

One gun fired at tire? Police avoid details. There was brief exchange after Dante fired toward officers. No one killed.

Sable surrendered when surrounded.

Why?

He was seventy? Fifty-six.

Not immortal.

He raised hands.

Jonah found in rear cargo area.

Alive.

Frightened.

No major physical injury.

Leah cried.

Dominic sat down.

Just sat.

Relief.

Then agent said:

“Where’s key?”

Still in evidence.

Good.

“Passphrase?”

Jonah told child advocate:

Moon goes west.

Same.

Sable never got hardware.

He only had phrase.

So ledger safe.

For now.

Jonah asked for Leah.

That surprised her.

“Why?”

“He heard Sable talking about ‘the waitress.’ He knows you’re connected.”

Leah did not rush.

Child advocate asked if she wanted contact.

“Yes.”

Video only.

Jonah appeared wrapped in blanket.

Small face.

Dark hair.

He looked older than nine.

“Are you Leah?”

“Yes.”

“Did you have my box?”

“I did for a while.”

“Why?”

“My sister Sofia took care of it.”

His eyes filled.

“You knew Sofia?”

“She was my sister.”

He started crying.

“She used to bring me cookies.”

Leah’s heart broke.

There.

Sofia was real to him.

Not clue.

“She made bad cookies.”

Jonah laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Good.

“She helped you?”

“Yes.”

“She told me if anybody asks about moon, don’t answer unless it’s a police lady or Leah.”

Leah stopped.

“She said my name?”

“Yes.”

Even though Leah knew nothing.

Sofia had made her contingency through trust, not information.

If Jonah ever needed safe adult, find Leah.

Why had he not?

Childhood.

Foster moves.

No contact.

Then Jonah asked:

“Is Sable my dad?”

Leah looked toward child advocate.

Not her answer.

She said:

“I don’t know what the tests will show.”

Good.

“He said he was.”

“Maybe.”

“Do I have to see him?”

“No one should make you without legal process and people looking out for you.”

Good.

He nodded.

Then:

“Can I have my box?”

Leah’s throat tightened.

“Police have it now.”

“It’s mine.”

“Yes.”

“When done?”

“I’ll help ask.”

Good.

Matteo and Jonah had both learned receipts mattered.

After call, Dominic said:

“You were good.”

Leah looked.

“He’s a child.”

“That’s why.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You keep praising basic things like they’re rare.”

His face changed.

“In my world, they are.”

“Then your world needs work.”

He almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Then federal agents opened preliminary Meridian ledger directory under warrant.

Not public.

Not Dominic’s private review.

Names.

Transactions.

Bishop.

Sable.

Vittorio Valenti.

Government officials.

And one name Leah knew.

Grand Aurelia Hotel Security Director:

MARTIN KELLER.

The same credentials used to access Leah’s personnel file.

Hotel security chief.

Current.

He had sold employee data to Hale and Dante.

That was how they found Matteo’s address so fast.

Not magic.

Corruption.

Keller was arrested.

Good.

Then another line.

LEAH MORENO.

Her name.

She froze.

“What?”

Date:

Three years ago.

Transaction:

$12,000 assistance reserve.

Recipient:

L. MORENO / GUARDIAN MEDICAL SUPPORT.

Leah felt cold.

“I never got twelve thousand.”

Dominic looked.

“Maybe hospital payments.”

“Do not guess.”

“Right.”

Federal trace later showed fund had paid Matteo’s first hospitalization after Sofia died.

Leah remembered.

She applied for charity aid.

Hospital said anonymous donor covered balance.

That was Valenti-Sable ledger?

Why Sable ledger?

Because Vittorio used Meridian channels for confidential assistance program.

Dirty infrastructure carrying good money.

Again.

Nothing clean.

Leah stared at Dominic.

“Your father paid Matteo’s hospital bill.”

“Yes.”

“Through Sable’s system.”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“Clinic protection fund.”

No personal targeting.

Good.

Then another entry:

S. MORENO — SAFE CONTACT.

Status: deceased.

Liability closure: incomplete.

Sofia had been inside ledger not as criminal.

As protected contact.

Her life touched this system deeper than Leah knew.

Dominic said:

“We can get full record through investigators.”

Leah nodded.

Not his archive alone.

Good.

Then Bishop entered room under guard after arrest? Maybe agents brought statement, not physically. He had been arrested as conspirator but cooperated.

Bishop admitted one more thing.

He knew Dominic would turn ledger over.

So he tipped Sable to meeting schedule.

Not intending kidnapping.

Still caused.

He had betrayed Dominic.

Half empire.

There.

Dominic read proffer summary.

Face blank.

Leah asked:

“You okay?”

“No.”

Good.

“What will you do?”

“Let court do it.”

She studied.

“Nothing else?”

He looked at her.

“I want to.”

“Honest.”

“Yes.”

“Will you?”

“No.”

Good.

Trust had failed.

May you like

He did not answer failure with private violence.

That was more incredible than anything Leah had expected from the man under dirty sheets.
