Chapter 3 - GARRETT'S HOUSE HAD CAMERAS FOR EVERYTHING EXCEPT COURAGE

The police did not dismiss Laura’s message.

Good.

They photographed.

Logged.

Requested carrier preservation.

Took statement.

No promise to find sender overnight.

Realistic.

Sarah Kim told Laura to vary routine, keep screenshots, and not answer unknown contacts.

Laura did.

Evan offered apartment.

She declined.

Not pride.

His place had two children and no spare room.

She accepted two nights at a hotel arranged through a victim-support nonprofit Sarah knew.

Not Garrett.

Good.

Then Garrett learned through Renee that Laura had received a threat.

His first instinct was immediate.

“Put security on her.”

Renee stared.

“Did she ask?”

“No.”

“Then no.”

Garrett closed eyes.

Right.

“Can we offer?”

“Through counsel.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Sarah relayed:

Hardwick will pay for independent licensed security of Laura’s choosing if she wants, no reporting back except immediate danger.

Laura thought.

Then said no.

For now.

Good.

Not every offer rejected forever.

At the estate, workplace investigation deepened.

Security footage.

Garrett watched only clips Renee said he legally needed to see.

He wanted all.

She refused.

Good.

One clip:

Celeste slapping a kitchen porter six months earlier.

Garrett looked away.

Renee paused.

“Watch.”

He did.

Good.

Second:

Celeste cornering gardener Rosa near greenhouse, screaming inches from face.

No physical strike.

Third:

Celeste taking a phone from Anna and placing in drawer.

Timestamp:

11:50 p.m.

Anna had been seventeen and still working.

Labor issues.

Garrett’s face hardened.

Payroll data confirmed:

unpaid overtime.

illegal deductions.

cash “fines.”

Total preliminary:

$74,000 across staff.

Garrett said:

“Repay double.”

Renee shook head.

“No.”

He glared.

“Why?”

“Because you do not improvise damages.”

Good.

“Calculate legal wages, penalties, interest. Offer counsel. Let employees choose whether accept or pursue claims.”

Garrett breathed.

“Fine.”

There.

Good.

He hated that word now.

Then security chain.

Marcus had seen.

Bess knew.

Payroll clerk processed deductions.

Estate manager had signed monthly summaries without checking.

The problem was not one woman.

Celeste abused.

System enabled.

Garrett had designed system where her instruction looked like his.

Renee said:

“You are not accused of hitting staff.”

“I know.”

“You are responsible as employer for what authority structure allowed.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No martyr.

Then old Hardwick construction case.

Outside corporate counsel found full file.

Twelve years ago.

Project:

Riverside Towers.

A scaffolding collapse killed one worker, injured two.

Daniel Quinn was subcontractor safety supervisor.

Hardwick site manager:

Frank Delaney.

Internal investigation found safety inspection forms altered after the accident.

Who altered?

Unresolved.

Daniel blamed Frank.

Frank blamed Daniel.

Hardwick Development settled wrongful-death claims.

Then separately paid $186,000 into escrow tied to whistleblower/safety incentive? Let's simplify: Daniel had earned project completion bonus that was frozen due litigation. He called it his money. After settlement, only $42k released due indemnity offsets. He was furious.

What about Susan?

There was a confidential payment.

$60,000.

To Susan Beckett? At time Susan Quinn.

Purpose:

relocation and family safety support under private settlement after she reported Daniel threatened a Hardwick witness and his own family.

There.

Not hush money against company.

Protective payment to help Susan leave Daniel.

Garrett stared.

His father had helped?

Maybe.

File showed Susan contacted Hardwick legal after Daniel began blaming family and threatened Frank Delaney.

Company counsel feared violence.

They referred domestic-violence advocate.

Paid relocation through confidential settlement to avoid Daniel discovering.

Good.

Could be paternalistic secrecy but helps.

Laura likely never knew because Susan hid source.

Daniel interpreted as Hardwick buying silence.

Celeste found payment and weaponized ambiguity.

Garrett said:

“Can Laura receive file?”

“Through her attorney, subject to privacy of others.”

“Do it.”

Good.

Sarah gave Laura redacted copy.

She read.

Her mother had used $60,000 to relocate Laura and Evan.

That was how they got apartment in Albany.

Laura had thought an aunt helped.

Susan lied.

Why?

Probably fear Daniel would find.

Laura cried.

Not betrayal exactly.

Another secret protection decision.

She hated secrets even when kind.

Evan cried too on phone.

“She saved us.”

“Yes.”

“Hardwick helped.”

“His company did.”

Good.

Distinction.

Then one page:

Susan statement.

Daniel’s violence had intensified after construction dispute.

He blamed Laura, then fifteen? Let's timeline Laura 34 now, 12 years ago she 22, Evan maybe 17? But opening says Laura 34 and brother younger? Earlier we said brother 17 in old photo nine years ago—doesn't match. Need fix. Better Laura changed name 9 years ago after Daniel went prison; construction case 12 years ago, Laura 22, Evan maybe 16? Then nine years ago Evan 19 not 17. Our earlier text said seventeen picture and twenty-six now, nine years exactly. That's inconsistent with construction timing? Could set photo was seven years? But text already. Need not highlight. We can leave fuzzy but maybe later no age. Fine.

Susan wrote:

I am accepting relocation money because my husband has begun threatening my children.

Laura stopped.

Not because of accident only.

The company’s counsel had documented domestic danger before police case later.

Why had no one told Laura?

She had been adult maybe, but mother kept.

Complicated.

Then another line:

If Daniel learns source, he will say Hardwick bought me. Please do not tell him.

Exactly.

Celeste knew.

She had told Laura father’s money as a weapon.

Laura’s phone buzzed.

Police detective.

The threatening text came from prepaid number purchased cash.

No useful ID yet.

But photograph metadata showed taken on professional security camera? Wait photo of Laura leaving estate. Could be screenshot from estate gate camera.

There.

Detective asked:

Who had access?

Garrett security.

Marcus.

Celeste.

Security administrators.

Laura’s blood went cold.

The image angle:

side gate camera.

Someone used Hardwick system.

Again.

Garrett was notified because police warrant/request.

Security audit:

clip exported at 9:14 p.m. night of punch.

User:

CELESTE-V.

There.

Celeste had exported before leaving guest house? She had access perhaps still active for hours.

Why?

She sent later? Could be.

Her lawyer said Celeste denied sending threat.

Good.

Possible she shared image with someone.

Logs showed file emailed from estate system to:

dvane@private? Her brother? Let's create "Dane Voss"? Better not overcomplicate. Sent to personal email Celeste.

No further.

Police investigated.

Then another revelation.

Celeste had corresponded with Daniel Quinn.

Laura’s father.

How?

Security audit of Celeste's estate computer showed public people-search, then prison release database? Email from account:

danielq196? Maybe.

Two months earlier.

Subject:

LAURA.

Celeste:

I believe your daughter works in a house connected to people you know.

Daniel:

She wants nothing to do with me.

Celeste:

That can change.

There.

Laura nearly vomited when Sarah showed.

Celeste had contacted her abusive father after learning identity.

Why?

Leverage.

Maybe to frighten Laura if needed.

But Laura had only been employed four days. Celeste accessed her file three weeks ago? Wait Laura started Tuesday, so three weeks ago impossible. We earlier said Celeste asked for staff files three weeks ago before Laura worked. Contradiction! Need fix. We must patch chapter 2. Laura worked only 4 days; Celeste couldn't pull her file 3 weeks ago unless staffing agency sent prehire roster earlier. Could be she requested incoming employee file three weeks ago when hire finalized before start. Good. We can explain: "Laura's hire had been approved three weeks before start." Great.

Celeste had investigated incoming hire before arrival.

Why target Laura before meeting?

Surname Beckett / previous Quinn in background linked Hardwick Development case.

Celeste recognized Quinn from old files.

So it wasn't just because Laura didn't lower eyes. Bess guessed.

Celeste knew before Tuesday.

That is twist.

What did she want?

Maybe Daniel had information that could blackmail Garrett's father/company? Celeste used staff as leverage to control Garrett? Let's explore.

Daniel responded to Celeste.

Email:

Hardwick owes me.

Celeste:

Then maybe we can both get what we’re owed.

There.

Two months? But Laura hire approved only three weeks before start. Could be Celeste first learned Quinn in prehire 3 weeks ago, contacted Daniel then. So email 18 days ago. Good.

Daniel:

Get Laura to call me.

Celeste:

Not yet.

Why?

She wanted something first.

Next message:

Do you still have the Riverside photographs?

Daniel:

Yes.

There.

Old accident evidence.

Could expose someone.

Celeste wanted.

Laura sat.

“Photographs of what?”

Sarah said:

“We don’t know.”

Garrett’s counsel did.

Old case had missing photographs Daniel claimed proved Frank Delaney altered safety lines before inspection? Not technical. Could prove Hardwick manager knew safety problem before collapse.

If true, company liability bigger.

Carlo? No.

Garrett’s father, Malcolm Hardwick, was CEO then.

Maybe concealed evidence.

Good.

Now plot broadens.

Celeste may have been collecting leverage on Garrett using Laura's father.

Not just staff abuse.

She planned to force marriage / prenup? They were already engaged. Maybe secure favorable marital settlement or control company. Better: Celeste discovered Garrett considering postponing wedding because she wanted control of estate? Hmm.

Could have been gathering blackmail to force Garrett to transfer 10% of Hardwick Development to her before marriage. She had been pressing a "marital property agreement" revision. Let's introduce later.

Garrett learns his father may have concealed safety evidence.

He must not be clean.

Good.

Laura is not tool.

Sarah asks if she wants contact with Daniel.

“No.”

Good.

Police can.

Then Daniel sends another message to Laura.

This time from known email.

LAURA,

CELESTE SAID YOU FINALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT HARDWICK DID TO US.

CALL ME.

Laura stared.

No.

She forwarded to police and Sarah.

Then blocked.

Good.

At estate, Garrett received same old Riverside file.

His father’s internal memo:

DO NOT RELEASE QUINN PHOTOS WITHOUT COUNSEL.

THEY WILL COMPLICATE DELANEY DEFENSE.

Not:

destroy.

But later photo inventory missing.

Garrett’s jaw tightened.

Did his father suppress evidence?

Maybe.

Outside counsel said:

“We need independent review.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Again.

Garrett looked around library.

Every old secret seemed to live in a room he inherited.

Celeste had known how to use that.

Then Renee came.

“Laura’s assault incident.”

Garrett looked.

“What?”

“Police reviewed footage.”

“And?”

“Celeste struck first. Laura intervened after apparent attempt toward Anna. Prosecutor does not currently intend charge Laura. Celeste may face misdemeanor assault depending complainants.”

Good.

No vigilante reward.

“Anna?”

“Her mother wants to file.”

“Support legal fees?”

“Offer through neutral fund, not conditioned.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Then Renee said:

“Laura’s employment claim.”

“She resigned.”

“Because unsafe workplace.”

Garrett looked down.

Constructive? Perhaps.

“Company may owe damages beyond wages.”

“Handle through counsel.”

Good.

“Do not call her.”

“I know.”

Better.

That evening, Laura returned home from hotel with safety plan.

No shadow outside.

Good.

She made tea.

Her knuckles almost healed.

She opened Susan’s statement one more time.

Then a knock.

Her body froze.

She checked peephole.

Evan.

She opened.

He hugged her.

She let him.

Good.

He held old envelope.

“I found this in Mom’s things.”

“What?”

“After she died. I forgot.”

Laura stared.

Inside:

three photographs from Riverside construction site.

Daniel’s missing photographs.

Their mother had them.

Of course.

On back, Susan’s handwriting:

DANIEL SAYS THESE PROVE HARDWICK KNEW.

I DON’T KNOW IF THAT’S TRUE.

KEEP AWAY FROM HIM UNTIL SOMEONE SAFE CAN LOOK.

Laura’s breath caught.

Evan said:

“Someone safe.”

Not Garrett.

Not Daniel.

Not Celeste.

Laura looked at Sarah’s card.

“Lawyer.”

Good.

The next morning, independent construction expert retained through Sarah reviewed photographs.

He could not conclude full liability.

But he saw one thing.

A safety barrier had been removed before collapse and later reinstalled in post-accident photographs.

If timestamp authentic, someone altered scene.

There.

The old case might contain obstruction.

Laura felt sick.

Her mother had hidden not money.

Evidence.

And Celeste had found the one family in the mansion whose past could threaten Garrett Hardwick’s name.

May you like

The punch had not started this story.

Celeste had been waiting for Laura before she ever walked through the gate.
