Chapter 3 - ARTHUR'S LEDGER

Norah read the memo three times.
Then a fourth.
BECKETT WORK CREDIT AGAINST ROBERT ACCOUNT.
No rate listed.
No term.
No signature from Norah.
Just:
Robert’s outstanding balance may be reduced through value generated by N.B. restructuring services, subject to Dominic’s approval.
N.B.
Norah.
Priya sat across from her.
“We need to separate legal effect from moral effect.”
“Moral effect is disgusting.”
“Yes.”
Good.
“Legal?”
“You signed an employment agreement with salary. You were paid.”
Norah nodded.
That part mattered.
She had never worked without wages.
The debt reduction happened separately, without her knowledge.
Priya continued.
“No document says you were personally liable for your father’s debt.”
“But they let me believe I was working it off.”
“Did anyone say that explicitly?”
Norah thought.
Dominic had said things like:
Keep the books clean and we keep your father breathing financially.
You want the number lower? Fix the Harbor account.
Every month you stay, his problem gets smaller.
Not:
you owe me.
Still coercive.
“Yes. In substance.”
“Document everything you remember.”
Good.
Priya had no interest in making outrage vague.
Then Arthur.
The memo originated from Arthur Vale, Dominic’s former finance chief.
Dead after the plant incident.
What happened at plant?
We only have excerpt referencing blood and Arthur. Need invent consistent enough: Perhaps Arthur betrayed Dominic and was killed in confrontation at plant. Norah witnessed aftermath. We can establish carefully.
Norah remembered Arthur on the floor of the abandoned bottling plant.
Blood.
Dominic.
Thomas.
A gun near Arthur’s hand.
She had not seen first shot? We can say "She had seen Arthur pull first"? Need avoid making Dominic too clean. Let's decide: Arthur tried to kill Dominic after financial betrayal, Dominic shot him. Norah arrived during/after? Opening says hands clean, blood disturbed. We can have Norah saw enough to know Dominic killed Arthur, maybe self-defense unclear. We need later accountability.
Priya asked:
“Did Arthur know the debt was cleared?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw monthly schedules.”
“Did Arthur keep separate ledgers?”
“He kept everything.”
Good.
Audit team found one encrypted archive under Arthur’s credentials.
Not hidden from Dominic necessarily.
Legacy.
Evelyn Chen requested authority to decrypt under counsel.
Approved.
Inside:
Robert debt account.
Norah work-credit tracking.
Arthur notes.
The debt balance reached zero thirteen months earlier.
Then something else.
Entries continued.
Not debt.
“NORAH RETENTION VALUE.”
Norah stared.
Monthly estimates:
revenue saved,
tax exposure reduced,
cash efficiency,
asset appreciation.
Arthur had calculated her economic value to Dominic’s organization.
Like an employee metric.
But notes were ugly.
APRIL:
Debt satisfied.
Recommend disclosure and renegotiation.
D refuses.
MAY:
N continues operating under debt assumption.
Legal exposure if discovered.
D says “not yet.”
JUNE:
Recommend formal bonus/equity to cure retention problem.
D says later.
There.
Dominic knew exactly.
Not an accidental delay.
Norah’s face went cold.
Then JULY:
D personal conflict likely compromising judgment.
Arthur saw.
AUGUST:
I told him this is coercion.
He told me to mind cash.
Norah stopped.
Arthur had objected.
The dead man she thought of as Dominic’s loyal accountant.
He had told him.
Good.
Then one line in September:
If N discovers, she will leave.
That may be best.
Norah looked away.
Priya said nothing.
Good.
October:
D directs $2m reserve into account for N future equity if she stays voluntarily after disclosure.
Disclosure not made.
There.
Dominic had planned.
Still lied.
November:
Arthur transferred reserve?
Audit showed no.
The $2m remained in clean brokerage account under holding company.
Interesting.
Then last month before Arthur died:
A found Robert contacted.
Robert knows debt closed.
Robert did not tell N.
D aware? Unknown.
There.
Her father knew.
Arthur knew.
Maybe Dominic knew father knew? Need later.
Then a separate folder:
PLANT.
Evelyn stopped.
“Potential criminal evidence.”
Priya nodded.
Norah looked.
“Is it about Arthur’s death?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Good.
Counsel took over.
Norah was not entitled to browse crime file just because she was angry.
Good.
She hated.
Then Dominic’s lawyer, Adrian Wolfe, requested meeting.
Norah declined.
Good.
Dominic requested through Priya:
I WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS IN WRITING OR WITH COUNSEL PRESENT. NO PRESSURE TO MEET.
Norah stared.
Better.
She sent list.
1. When did you know debt was satisfied?
2. Why did you refuse Arthur’s recommendation?
3. Did you know my father knew?
4. What was $2m reserve?
5. Did Arthur threaten to tell me?
6. Did his death have anything to do with this account?
Dominic answered through counsel same day.
1. I knew the day the balance reached zero.
2. Because I believed Norah would leave and I wanted more time to convince her to stay. This was selfish and wrong.
3. I learned Robert had discovered the account closure approximately six weeks before the plant incident. I did not know he had known for months.
4. The reserve was intended as a retroactive performance/equity payment. It was never presented because I had not disclosed the debt closure.
5. Arthur repeatedly told me I needed to disclose. He did not threaten me.
6. No. Arthur’s death was connected to a separate betrayal involving stolen funds and an attempted attack at the plant. The work-credit account was not a motive.
Norah read last twice.
Separate betrayal.
Maybe.
Then Dominic added one line:
I will not ask you to believe item six without records.
Good.
The plant file became important.
Criminal counsel for Dominic had preserved surveillance video.
There was video.
Norah had not known.
Why?
Industrial site camera.
The footage showed:
Arthur arriving armed.
Dominic arriving with Thomas.
Argument.
Arthur drawing weapon.
Firing first.
Dominic returning fire.
Arthur died.
Self-defense on video?
Could still be criminal context, but shooting response appears self-defense.
Why no police?
Because illegal meeting and stolen funds.
Dominic’s men removed body? That is severe. In opening, Arthur has brother in Oregon receiving money. Perhaps they concealed death. Need make consequences.
Footage then:
Dominic ordered scene cleaned.
Body moved.
No police.
There.
Even if shooting justified, concealment criminal.
Norah watched only because Priya secured access with counsel? As potential witness? She could view summary rather than video. Let's say prosecutors later. For now counsel provides certified summary from independent review.
She felt no relief.
Arthur deserved a legal record.
His brother deserved truth.
Money had been sent instead.
Blood money.
Her breakfast question.
“What happens to his brother?”
“He received money this morning.”
Dominic had paid before notifying.
Had brother been told Arthur dead?
Maybe yes, told accident? Let's explore.
Norah asked through Priya:
What does Arthur’s brother know?
Answer:
He was told Arthur died during a violent dispute. He was not told Dominic fired the shot until yesterday, when Dominic’s criminal counsel contacted him.
Norah’s stomach twisted.
Dominic was beginning disclosure because audit.
Good.
Not noble early.
Arthur’s brother, Michael Vale, retained lawyer.
Could report.
Likely.
Good.
Dominic’s world was cracking.
Norah did not rush back to hold it.
Important.
Then father.
Norah drove to his house in New Jersey.
No security? She chose Thomas to drive? She didn't want. She drove herself during daytime.
Her father opened.
Looked older.
“Norah.”
She walked past.
“Sit.”
He sat.
Good.
For once.
She put Arthur memo on table.
“You offered my work.”
His face collapsed.
“I was desperate.”
“You offered me.”
“I offered your services.”
“You never asked.”
“I knew you would say no.”
There.
Good.
“How did you justify?”
He looked at hands.
“I thought if you worked there, you would be safe.”
Norah laughed.
“That is obscene.”
“I knew Dominic would not hurt you.”
“You did not know him.”
“I knew his reputation.”
“Exactly.”
Good.
Then:
“You stole escrow.”
“Yes.”
“How many clients?”
“Three.”
“Did they all get repaid?”
“Yes.”
“Before they knew?”
“Yes.”
“Did anyone lose money?”
“Not principal.”
“Trust?”
Her father looked.
“No.”
Good.
“Were you ever prosecuted?”
“No.”
“Because Dominic covered?”
“Yes.”
There.
He owed.
But Norah did not.
“You let me think your debt came from a failed development.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Shame.”
No grand motive.
Shame.
Good.
“And when you learned debt was gone?”
“I thought if I told you, you’d hate me.”
“I do right now.”
He flinched.
Good.
Truth.
Norah continued.
“I am not paying your secrets anymore.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She stood.
“You don’t.”
Then:
“If investigators ask about escrow, you tell truth.”
He looked terrified.
“Norah.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The part where I’m supposed to save you.”
Silence.
“I won’t.”
Good.
She left.
No reconciliation.
At 6:00 p.m., Evelyn called Priya.
Another audit finding.
Arthur’s “retention value” reserve of $2 million had clean source.
Verified profits from a legal commercial real-estate sale.
No criminal tracing issue identified so far.
The account was earmarked internally for Norah but not legally hers.
Dominic could release.
Norah said:
“No.”
Priya looked.
“You may have compensation claim.”
“I know.”
“Do not reject money out of emotion.”
Good.
Norah breathed.
“What do I do?”
“Value your work independently. Then negotiate.”
Good.
No symbolic refusal.
They hired valuation expert.
Estimate:
Norah’s work over four years had created or preserved between $8.4 and $12.7 million in lawful enterprise value, excluding illegal businesses.
Her total salary/bonuses:
$1.1 million.
Large, but less than value.
Equity claim?
No automatic right.
Negotiation.
Good.
Norah stared.
Dominic’s $2m reserve was not generosity.
It was underpayment correction.
Maybe.
She sent offer through Priya:
$2m cash from verified lawful source into escrow.
Plus 3% equity in clean legal holding after audit.
No requirement she stay.
No release of fraud/coercion-related claims.
Separate settlement of employment misrepresentation.
Dominic accepted $2m immediately.
Countered 4% equity.
Priya blinked.
“He’s negotiating against himself.”
Norah said:
“He wants me back.”
“Yes.”
Good.
She did not accept 4 yet.
Then Michael Vale, Arthur’s brother, filed police report in New York regarding concealment of Arthur’s death.
There.
The plant was no longer private.
Dominic’s criminal attorney notified him at 9:10.
Norah learned from Priya because she could become witness.
She sat quietly.
This could send Dominic to prison.
Not for shooting necessarily.
For concealment.
Evidence tampering.
Illegal operations around meeting.
She felt fear.
Then hated herself for fear.
Dr. Reyes? She doesn't have therapist yet. Could introduce later. For now she called Simon? No.
She called no one.
Good.
At midnight, Dominic sent one message through approved direct channel? She said don't call, maybe message through counsel only. He shouldn't.
He did not.
Good.
That absence mattered.
At 1:00 a.m., Norah opened the term sheet.
Partner.
The word looked different now.
A partner is not someone who receives secrets after they become impossible to hide.
She closed laptop.
The audit was turning Dominic’s empire into a body made of numbers.
Every number had a source.
May you like
Every source had a choice.
And for the first time, Norah was refusing to let love become another category where she stopped tracing.
