Chapter 6 - Vincent Santoro Was Alive, and He Had Spent Three Years Refusing to Let Adrian Find Him.

Adrian learned from federal agents.

Not Marin.

Good.

No messenger role.

The meeting happened at his attorney’s office.

Two agents.

Detective Ortiz.

Adrian’s counsel.

No Vincent.

They told him only what they were authorized to tell.

Vincent was alive.

Safe.

Had entered witness protection voluntarily.

Had provided information in a federal investigation involving Howerin’s vehicle operation, port theft, and several Santoro-linked enterprises.

There.

Adrian went still.

“Santoro-linked?”

One agent looked at him.

“Yes.”

There.

Not only Howerin.

Vincent had not merely run from a rival.

He had run from Adrian’s world.

That mattered.

“Where is he?”

“We cannot tell you.”

“Can I speak to him?”

“If he agrees.”

There.

“Does he know I know?”

“Yes.”

“Did he agree?”

“No.”

There.

Adrian stood.

His lawyer said his name.

He sat.

Good.

Three years earlier, Adrian would have sent men to every city until somebody broke.

Now he sat.

Barely.

“Why?”

he asked.

The agent answered only:

“Mr. Santoro has his own reasons.”

That was not enough.

Still all he got.

Later, after prosecutors coordinated because Vincent’s testimony might be needed in Howerin case, he agreed to provide a written statement to Adrian.

Not location.

Not phone.

One page.

Adrian read alone.

Adrian,

I am alive.

There.

No apology first.

I left because Howerin knew I had copied his records, and because I had decided to cooperate with federal investigators.

There.

I did not tell you because you would have tried to stop me, protect me, move me, or punish people before I could testify.

There.

All plausible.

You would have called that love.

There.

I would have called it control.

Adrian stopped reading.

Then continued.

Ward helped me because I told him I was going to police.

There.

He did not know where I was being taken.

Good.

I left the watch by accident when I washed blood and grease from my hands after leaving Dyer Street.

There.

He told me he would give it to you if I did not come back.

There.

Why didn't Ward give it? Fire, fear, perhaps Vincent told him not to contact Santoro until safe. Continue.

I called you from outside the station.

I could not speak.

I wanted to hear you answer.

There.

I am sorry for that cruelty.

There.

I also knew if I said one word, I might tell you where I was.

There.

I entered protection before dawn.

Ward was supposed to be contacted by federal agents within forty-eight hours because he had evidence.

There.

He was not.

Important.

Why?

A federal coordination failure.

The agent assigned to local liaison delayed after a competing operation; Ward received no protection before Howerin fire.

Institutional responsibility.

Vincent continued:

I learned about Ward’s fire after I was relocated.

I asked to contact Marin.

They refused because my location and cooperation were still sensitive.

There.

I accepted that too easily.

There.

Good.

I am sorry.

Then:

I have not contacted you because the danger did not end when Howerin’s case stalled.

Some of the people I gave information about worked with you.

There.

Adrian’s chest tightened.

Not necessarily Adrian himself on all.

I did not know whether hearing my voice would make you look for me.

It would have.

There.

I needed one life where your protection could not arrive before my consent.

There.

Hard.

Final:

I am willing to testify now.

I am not ready to see you.

Please do not make Marin Ashb, the police, or anyone else carry messages between us.

There.

He signed:

Vincent.

Adrian read twice.

Then handed letter to attorney.

“Tell agents I understand.”

His lawyer looked.

“Do you?”

“No.”

Good.

“Tell them anyway.”

There.

He went to therapy that afternoon.

No punching wall.

No convoy.

Progress can be painfully uncinematic.

Meanwhile, Marin learned another part.

Federal witness-protection liaison met her because Ward had been an unprotected corroborating witness.

They apologized formally.

Not personal guilt theater.

The agency had recorded Ward as “secondary local source.”

His follow-up was delayed.

No one warned local police that Howerin might target him because officials feared compromising Vincent’s relocation.

There.

Protection of one witness increased risk to another.

System failure.

The federal review could not prove Ward would have survived with earlier contact.

Still.

They acknowledged.

Marin sat with Tobin during meeting.

He asked:

“Did you decide Dad was less important because he wasn’t your informant?”

The agent took time.

“No.”

Then:

“Our actions treated his risk as less urgent.”

There.

Good answer.

Tobin looked away.

At least honest.

The agency offered victim support and access to internal review findings where lawful.

Marin accepted.

Not forgiveness.

Information.

Then Vincent’s testimony.

Before grand jury? Later trial. He provided deposition and evidence remotely under protective orders at first.

He explained Howerin’s operation.

Stolen cars.

Garages.

Morse.

Port routes.

Vincent had infiltrated by pretending interest in partnership.

He discovered Howerin paid officials and threatened independent shops.

Ward refused to participate.

Vincent warned him.

Ward started notebook.

There.

Why did Howerin target Ward after Vincent vanished?

Because Howerin believed Ward had copies of ledger or knew where Vincent had gone.

There.

Did he?

Ward knew Vincent intended to go federal.

Not location.

He refused to tell Howerin anything.

Then Howerin ordered fire.

Good.

Why keep notebook in cookie tin and note in wrench?

Ward did not trust one hiding place.

Mechanic.

Makes sense.

Then Adrian’s own role.

Vincent testified that some Santoro businesses used coercive collections and illegal gambling.

Adrian knew some.

Not Howerin operation.

But Vincent had feared his brother’s response as much as Howerin’s retaliation.

There.

Federal investigators opened or expanded a separate review.

Adrian’s lawyer warned.

“You may become a target.”

Adrian answered:

“I probably should have been one already.”

There.

No martyr.

Then Marin’s temporary shop situation.

Insurance paid initial advance.

Business association connected her to a vacant two-bay space owned by retired mechanic named Jorge Mendes.

Six-month lease.

Market rent.

Month-to-month after.

No Santoro ownership.

Good.

Tools?

Insurance replaced some.

Ruthie organized a tool-lending list.

Tobin bought used diagnostic cart with his savings.

Marin objected.

He said:

“It’s my shop too.”

She looked.

“Is it?”

There.

He froze.

Important.

Ward had left shop to Marin because Tobin was sixteen.

Everyone assumed Tobin would stay.

Did he want that?

He thought.

“I don’t know.”

Good.

“Then don’t spend your life savings because Dad did.”

There.

He kept some.

Bought only tools he wanted.

Good.

Adrian’s Bellwether account returned.

Formal purchase orders.

Invoices.

No cash.

The first payment arrived by ACH.

Marin stared at screen.

Ruthie said:

“Romantic.”

Marin threw rag.

Good.

Bellwether was one customer among nine now.

Not enough.

Still important.

Adrian did not visit for six weeks.

Then his sedan replacement needed service.

Fleet manager called.

Marin said:

“Send it.”

There.

Adrian came to pick up himself.

No entourage inside.

He stood at temporary garage.

Looked around.

“You rebuilt fast.”

“It’s rented.”

“Still.”

She handed invoice.

He paid through company system.

No cash.

Then:

“I heard Vincent is alive.”

Marin said nothing.

Not her conversation.

Good.

Adrian smiled faintly.

“He specifically told everyone not to use you as messenger.”

“I like him.”

“That makes one of us.”

There.

Marin looked at him.

“You’re angry.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He almost laughed.

“Everyone says that now.”

“Anger isn’t the problem.”

“What is?”

“What you think it lets you do.”

There.

Ward could have said it.

Adrian nodded.

Then:

“I may be indicted.”

There.

Marin’s face changed.

“For Howerin?”

“No.”

“Your own things.”

“Yes.”

Good.

She leaned against bench.

“Are you going to run?”

“No.”

“Threaten witnesses?”

“No.”

“Buy a judge?”

He looked offended.

“No.”

“Progress.”

He laughed despite himself.

Then sobered.

“I wanted you to hear before Bellwether changes management.”

“Why?”

“Because if I’m restricted, fleet account will be moved under independent procurement.”

Good.

“That sounds healthier.”

“It probably is.”

There.

He looked around shop.

“Marin.”

“Yes?”

“If Bellwether stops being your customer because of my legal problems—”

“No.”

He stopped.

“What?”

“Do not offer to compensate me.”

There.

“I was going to.”

“I know.”

Good.

“My business risk includes customers changing.”

There.

“If you owe an invoice, pay it. Nothing else.”

Adrian looked at her.

Then:

“Understood.”

He left.

Marin watched through open bay as black car pulled away.

No men stayed behind.

No one watched door.

That night Tobin asked:

“Do you trust him?”

Marin thought.

“No.”

There.

“Do you like him?”

She threw rag at him too.

He laughed.

Good.

Trust was not yes or no forever.

Neither was fear.

And protection, Marin was learning, meant very little if the protected person never got to decide what happened next.

Before the federal meeting ended, Marin asked one question the agents clearly had not expected.

“Did Ward know helping Vincent could put us at risk?”

The liaison took time.

“Probably.”

There.

Marin’s jaw tightened.

“Then why did he not tell me?”

No one answered for Ward.

Good.

Tobin did later.

“Because he thought he was Dad.”

There.

Meaning:

He thought fatherhood meant absorbing danger privately.

Marin looked at him.

“You’re still mad.”

“Yes.”

“So am I.”

Good.

That helped.

They did not have to make Ward perfect in order to love him.

His courage had mattered.

May you like

So had his secrecy.

Both belonged in the story.
