Chapter 5 - VICTOR’S HEARING

Victor entered court with a cane.
The same cane he had tapped against the lawn while ordering Ellie to crawl.
Valentina hated the object.
Then corrected herself.
A cane is a cane.
He used it cruelly.
The object did not.
Victor wore dark suit.
Silver hair.
Expression composed.
Reporters outside called him “the Lion of Queens.”
Valentina had grown up hearing that nickname with pride.
Now it sounded childish.
A lion.
A patriarch.
A king.
All words designed to make one man’s appetite seem like nature.
The hearing addressed bail conditions, protective orders, and preliminary evidence.
Not final guilt.
Victor’s lawyer, Samuel Dorne, argued:
Victor was elderly, respected, no flight risk.
The “training” was culturally and familially contextual discipline.
No severe injuries.
Valentina’s assault allegation arose during chaotic confrontation.
Prosecutor responded with videos.
Raw.
No need speech.
Ellie crying:
“I can’t.”
Victor:
“You can when I say.”
Lucas:
“Grandpa, she’s falling.”
Victor:
“Then hold on.”
Laughter behind camera.
The courtroom changed.
Dorne shifted:
poor judgment, not intent to harm.
Then Anchor documents.
Draft custody petition.
Forged psychiatrist letter.
Saint Gabriel intake.
Edited clips.
Harder.
Judge imposed strict no-contact with Valentina, Ellie, Lucas, Julia, potential witnesses; home confinement pending further proceedings with electronic monitoring? Given severe and wealthy flight risk maybe detained? Let's keep remanded? But user likes powerful consequences. Yet due age maybe secure bail with strict. However family influence could obstruct. Let's say judge denied bail initially based on obstruction evidence and plan to move child.
Victor looked at Valentina.
Not pleading.
Betrayed.
As if she had jailed him.
After hearing, Dorne approached Camille Park.
“Victor wants to send Ellie a letter.”
“No.”
“Eventually?”
“Through court and clinician if ever.”
“He’s her grandfather.”
Camille:
“That is not a safety credential.”
Good.
Then Marcus hearing.
He looked worse.
No patriarch composure.
Julia attended.
Lucas did not.
Marcus’s attorney argued he was pressured by Victor.
Texts showed:
Marcus sometimes objected.
One message:
This is too much for Ellie.
Victor:
Then stop being weak.
Marcus continued.
Another:
Lucas is scared.
Victor:
Good. Fear teaches hierarchy.
Marcus:
I’m not doing this forever.
Victor:
Until Val breaks.
So Marcus was controlled too.
But he had choices.
He filmed.
Edited.
Forged.
Prepared custody documents.
Threatened Lucas.
Victim of Victor’s domination and perpetrator.
Both.
Judge ordered no contact and detention pending trial due evidence tampering.
Julia cried outside.
Valentina did not know whether to comfort.
She asked:
“Do you want me here?”
Julia nodded.
They stood.
Then relatives.
Aunt Teresa requested meeting with investigators and Valentina’s counsel.
She admitted knowing Anchor goal in broad terms.
“I knew Victor wanted Valentina removed from board.”
“Did you know Ellie was being used?”
“I knew the videos upset Valentina.”
“That’s not answer.”
Teresa cried.
“Yes.”
She had not known Saint Gabriel.
But knew provocation.
Why laugh reactions?
“To show Victor I was with him.”
There.
Laughing at child as loyalty signal.
That explained group culture.
People were performing allegiance for patriarch.
Each reaction told Victor:
I accept your authority.
Ellie’s pain was currency.
Teresa was charged later with conspiracy? Maybe if knowingly encouraging child abuse to provoke. Prosecutor could offer cooperation. Let's keep she faced obstruction/conspiracy review and later plea to lesser facilitation? We can handle.
Then Uncle Carlo refused cooperation.
Search warrant on office found minutes from family council.
Subject:
SUCCESSION STABILITY.
Carlo wrote:
“Valentina’s maternal instinct is her vulnerability.”
He knew.
Then:
“Ellie must remain within estate control.”
Not child safety.
Control.
Gerald Vane, family attorney, had drafted legal mechanisms.
His defense:
client direction.
But lawyers cannot fabricate evidence knowingly.
The forged psychiatrist letter and false Saint Gabriel statement implicated.
He surrendered license temporarily and faced charges.
The family’s respectable layer cracked.
Then Valentina’s own corporate conduct.
Federal investigators asked about old port contracts.
Camille warned:
“Truth can widen.”
Valentina:
“Let it.”
She admitted:
She knew some contracts came through pressure, though not specific threats.
She approved a vendor despite concern because Victor insisted.
She used family political influence for zoning.
She had authorized cash settlement to avoid lawsuit after a guard assaulted protester.
Not innocent.
She faced civil penalties and potential regulatory consequences.
Why include?
Because breaking cycle cannot mean only prosecuting people who hurt your child while preserving your own convenient wrongdoing.
Ellie did not need details.
But one day she would know mother chose truth even when expensive.
Then Caruso Holdings board.
Emergency meeting.
Victor suspended.
Marcus suspended.
Carlo voted out after independent directors sided with Valentina? But Valentina recused due investigation.
An interim independent CEO appointed.
Family lost direct operating control for first time in eighty years.
Relatives furious.
One text to Valentina:
Your daughter cost us company.
Valentina screenshot to police/counsel.
Then responded? Better no direct.
But the sentence haunted.
Ellie cost us.
No.
Adults' choices cost them power.
She told Dr. Grant:
“I want to show Ellie.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“What would she gain?”
Nothing.
So no.
Children do not need proof adults blame them.
Protect without secrecy? Later age appropriate.
Then Ellie’s therapy.
She asked:
“Did Grandpa go jail because me?”
Valentina:
“No.”
“Because video?”
“Because adults are deciding consequences for choices he made.”
“If I didn’t tell?”
Valentina paused.
“Police might have found out later or maybe not. But his choices were still his.”
Good.
“Did Mommy make him go?”
“No. Court.”
Important.
Then:
“Is family mad at me?”
Some were.
But answer:
“Some adults are upset about what is happening. Their feelings are not your job.”
Ellie:
“Are they mad?”
Valentina:
“Some may be.”
Honesty.
“Can they come?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Then Lucas.
After three months, Ellie asked to read his letter.
Dr. Singh present.
She read slowly.
At:
I knew you were crying.
She stopped.
“He knew.”
Valentina’s heart tightened.
“Yes.”
“He still sat.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“He was scared too.”
“Yes.”
Ellie folded letter.
“Can I write?”
“Yes.”
She wrote:
Lucas,
I’m still mad.
You were heavy.
I couldn’t breathe good.
Grandpa being scary doesn’t make it okay.
I don’t want to see you yet.
Ellie.
No “I forgive.”
Perfect.
Lucas received through therapists.
He replied nothing.
As asked.
Then Victor’s attorney requested reconsideration of no contact, arguing Ellie missed him.
Evidence from therapist:
Ellie did miss pancakes and stories.
Also feared him.
Court kept no-contact.
Missing someone does not prove contact safe.
That became one of Valentina’s most important lessons.
Love does not cancel evidence.
Then the most painful discovery from Victor’s seized desk.
A framed photograph of Ellie at age three.
On back, Victor’s handwriting:
My favorite.
Valentina stared.
How could favorite become leverage?
Dr. Grant:
“People can love and objectify at same time when they believe relationship gives ownership.”
There.
Victor loved Ellie.
That did not make abuse less real.
It made family mythology more dangerous.
He had not hurt a child he hated.
He hurt a child he believed belonged to him.
And that was exactly the belief Valentina intended to end.
Victor’s detention triggered another legal fight over medical care.
His lawyers argued age and cardiac condition made jail dangerous.
Valentina had no opinion on punishment conditions.
That surprised relatives.
“After what he did?”
She said:
“He should receive lawful medical care.”
Not mercy to prove goodness.
Rule.
Ellie heard part of adult conversation and asked:
“Grandpa sick?”
“He has heart problems.”
“Can doctor help?”
“Yes.”
“Even if jail?”
“Yes.”
She seemed relieved.
Children often need world where care is not withdrawn as punishment.
Important.
Then Valentina confronted one temptation.
A tabloid offered full archive purchase for an amount large enough to fund legal costs.
They wanted raw videos.
She was furious.
Camille said:
“We can seek injunction if they obtained unlawfully, but they’re offering because someone in family is shopping material.”
Renzo again perhaps.
Valentina refused.
No child’s pain becomes family counterattack.
Then she asked court to seal as much child footage as possible.
Some evidence necessarily public descriptions.
Raw media protected.
Good.
Then company employees.
Many had no idea why board imploded.
Rumors:
Valentina coup.
Victor health.
Federal raid.
She issued internal statement:
leadership investigation involves serious allegations unrelated to ordinary employees; wages and operations continue; independent hotline available; retaliation prohibited.
No family details.
Employees are not audience.
Then one logistics manager reported Marcus had used company security drivers for private estate errands including Saint Gabriel scouting.
That linked corporate resources.
More charges and governance issues.
Valentina felt sick.
Again, she had authorized Marcus broad fleet access.
She told Camille:
“I gave him tools.”
Camille:
“You did not give him permission to misuse them.”
“Still.”
“Then fix access.”
They did:
purpose logs,
dual approval,
no private family use without accounting.
Boring controls.
Exactly what dynasties hate.
Then Ellie began sleeping through night twice a week.
No one charted publicly.
Dr. Singh did clinically.
Valentina stopped asking every morning:
“Nightmare?”
Because that made nightmares central.
Instead:
“Breakfast?”
Sometimes Ellie volunteered.
Sometimes not.
Normality not denial.
Then one morning Ellie asked:
“Can Grandpa stop being my grandpa?”
Hard.
Biology/social.
Valentina:
“He is your grandfather by family. You don’t have to have relationship with him.”
“Can I call him Victor?”
“If you want.”
Ellie tried:
“Victor.”
Then:
“Sounds weird.”
“You can choose later.”
No pressure.
Then:
“Can I call pancakes Grandpa pancakes?”
Valentina laughed.
“Yes.”
Memory can be separated from person.
A recipe does not belong to abuser forever.
They made pancakes together.
Ellie said hers better.
May you like
Probably not.
Valentina agreed.
