Chapter 7 - LUCIA’S REAL NAME

The DNA result did not mean what Dante’s first instinct told him.
He was still Maribel’s father.
Paternity records from her birth, plus a fresh test Dante demanded immediately, confirmed it.
Adrian was not Maribel’s father.
He was her uncle.
Maternal side.
Lucia’s brother.
Dante sat alone for five minutes after learning.
Then he laughed once.
No humor.
His wife had never told him she had a brother.
Because Lucia Vale had not been born Lucia Bellini, as Dante believed.
Her birth name was Sofia Cole.
Adrian Cole’s younger sister.
Isabel Rowan had helped create Sofia’s new identity when Sofia was twenty-two.
Why?
Their father, Vincent Cole, worked for Lorenzo Vale’s Mirror Office.
He used his children as operational assets.
Adrian entered surveillance willingly as a young man.
Sofia tried to leave.
Lorenzo agreed to erase her original identity in exchange for one final service from Isabel:
move Sofia outside the network.
Isabel built Lucia Bellini.
New documents.
New family narrative.
A deceased maternal line from Italy.
Education records adjusted through legitimate changes and fraudulent backfills.
Then Lucia met Dante years later.
By chance?
Isabel insisted yes.
Adrian believed otherwise.
Dante did not know which hurt less.
Lucia eventually confessed her past to Adrian, not Dante.
Then when she learned Lorenzo’s old succession framework threatened Maribel, she reopened contact with Isabel.
That became ORCHID.
Not one person?
Actually Orchid was Lucia’s operation codename.
After Lucia died, Adrian kept using ORCHID as a dead-drop account.
Then someone hijacked it.
Thus ORCHID messages after death were false flag.
That matched "ORCHID MUST REMAIN DEAD."
The attacker needed everyone to believe the original Orchid—Lucia’s operation—ended with her.
But why was Adrian biologically related important?
Because Caleb found the "mother file" and learned Isabel created Lucia.
He may also have discovered Vincent Cole’s role.
Vincent had supposedly died eighteen years earlier.
Another convenient death.
Isabel said he did die.
This time with body.
Then the Blue? no.
We need controller reveal maybe Samuel? Rafe? Could be Rafe secretly Vincent? Too much.
Let's build controller: Rafe Calder is actually Lucia/Adrian half-brother? Hmm.
Better: Samuel Pierce manipulated succession? But audio context exonerated partly. Could be Rafe working with old Mirror Office? Yet Lucia trusted Rafe. Maybe Rafe was planted by Lorenzo and later trying to protect Maribel. The true controller could be Mina Serrano, overlooked deputy security. She swept study and missed camera, had opportunity, maybe child of Vincent? Need compelling.
Mina Serrano had worked for Dante eight years, joined after Lucia. Could secretly be Adrian's operational partner MOTH. But Colin device orders from MOTH, so yes maybe Mina = MOTH. Need evidence over next chapters.
Elena reviewed timelines.
Who had access to install bookcase camera despite sweeps?
Mina.
Who ran the sweep that missed it?
Mina.
Who restored corridor lights during blackout and could move unseen?
Mina.
Who called police, which looks helpful.
Who might have shot Adrian?
Mina's pistol accounted, but could have second gun.
Who knew Rafe badge template?
Deputy chief.
Who could clone biometric/access?
Security admin.
Dante had trusted Mina because she had saved Maribel once during a school-threat incident.
What if that incident was staged?
Elena said:
“Don’t decide.”
Dante glared.
Then:
“I know.”
Good.
They needed proof.
Colin Wade eventually talked under counsel.
He admitted installing rose camera and bookcase camera.
Who ordered him?
He knew controller only as MOTH.
Communication via encrypted device.
Payments in crypto converted through shell contractor.
He never saw MOTH.
But once, MOTH sent him a voice message.
Digital forensics recovered deleted fragment.
Female voice.
Distorted.
Five words:
Do not improvise around the child.
Elena listened.
Dante listened.
Not enough.
Could be Mina.
Could be Vanessa? no wrong.
Could be Isabel.
Could be anyone.
Then Colin said something useful.
MOTH always knew when Mina changed security rotations.
Too fast to be external.
Maybe access.
Also MOTH once warned:
CALDER CHECKING OLD TUNNEL. MOVE CACHE.
Rafe had been privately investigating carriage tunnel.
Why did he not tell Dante?
Rafe answered:
Because Lucia asked him before death to investigate Samuel and anyone using old maps.
After Lucia died, he kept going.
Again:
secret protection.
Dante almost fired him simply for that.
But evidence suggested Rafe may have been trying to uncover network.
Samuel too.
Two loyal men working separately, each suspecting the other, exactly as MOTH wanted.
Dante called both into one room with police present.
He said:
“No more private investigations.”
Samuel began:
“Dante—”
“No.”
Rafe:
“There are reasons—”
“No.”
Dante looked at both.
“My wife died. Caleb died. Adrian died. My daughter was watched. Elena’s son was targeted. Every one of you thought you could quietly protect someone by keeping information compartmentalized.”
No one argued.
Good.
“From now on, if it affects Maribel, Theo, Elena, or this estate, it goes to police and to all relevant adults.”
Samuel said:
“That may expose criminal Vale operations.”
Dante met his eyes.
“Then expose what must be exposed.”
Rafe looked surprised.
That cost Dante.
Important.
He had spent his life treating law enforcement as adversary.
Now secrecy had become more dangerous than prosecution.
Then ballistics returned.
Adrian was shot with a weapon registered eighteen years earlier to Vale Protective Services training inventory.
Reported destroyed during a flood.
Signed destruction certification by:
Lorenzo Vale.
Witness:
Mina Serrano’s father, Javier Serrano.
Dante stared.
Mina’s father had served Lorenzo.
Mina herself joined Dante years later claiming her father had been a driver.
Not security.
False background.
Police brought Mina in.
She did not run.
She sat.
Asked for attorney.
Then she looked at Dante and said:
“You should have left the roses alone.”
Not denial.
Dante’s face went cold.
Elena said:
“Why Maribel?”
Mina looked at her.
“Because Maribel is the only legitimate key left.”
“To what?” Dante asked.
Mina smiled sadly.
“Your father’s real empire.”
Dante almost laughed.
He knew his father’s assets.
Or thought he did.
Mina said:
“Not money.”
Then:
“Names.”
Lorenzo’s Mirror Office archive had never been destroyed.
It was encrypted behind a biometric trust requiring a Vale blood heir.
Dante’s access had been revoked by Lorenzo before death after Dante tried dismantling surveillance.
Maribel’s future biometric signature was designated successor.
At age ten, her trust would activate first access token.
She was eight.
Two years.
Why watch her now?
To map routines.
Medical samples?
Prepare abduction?
Maybe.
Mina continued:
“Lucia wanted the archive destroyed. Adrian wanted to sell it. Caleb wanted to expose it. Your father wanted Maribel to inherit it.”
Dante felt sick.
“What do you want?”
Mina said:
“To make sure nobody ever opens it.”
That sounded almost noble.
Then why cameras, threats, sabotage, Adrian dead?
Dante asked.
Mina’s expression hardened.
“Because Adrian was going to take Maribel.”
There.
She claimed she killed Adrian to stop kidnapping.
Was that true?
She said Adrian entered estate through old tunnel with Matteo as bait, intending to reach Maribel during blackout.
Mina intercepted.
Shot him.
Then why black out estate?
Mina said she did not.
Colin did under MOTH instruction?
But she was MOTH.
Contradiction.
Dante caught it.
“You said you are MOTH?”
“I didn't.”
True.
She said only about roses? Let's be precise.
“Then who is MOTH?”
Mina looked toward one-way interview glass.
Then at Elena.
“Ask your mother.”
Elena went still.
Isabel.
Again.
When confronted, Isabel did not deny.
“I used MOTH twenty years ago.”
Past.
“Now?”
“No.”
“Can someone use old identity?”
“Yes.”
“Who knew?”
“Adrian. Caleb. Lucia.”
Three dead.
Maybe.
Then one living person.
Isabel added:
“Samuel Pierce.”
Dante closed his eyes.
Another circle.
But Samuel’s reaction was different.
When asked, he said:
“Yes. I know MOTH.”
Then:
“MOTH was not Isabel.”
Everyone stared.
“Who?”
Samuel looked at Dante.
“Your mother.”
Dante went still.
His mother, Caterina Vale, had died when he was seventeen.
Or so he believed.
No.
We can’t repeat dead mother alive too much. Better she truly dead but codename inherited to her clandestine archive officer? Hmm.
Samuel said:
“MOTH was the contingency identity used by whoever chaired Mirror Office after Lorenzo.”
After Lorenzo died, chair passed to Samuel temporarily.
He refused.
Then assigned to someone else?
“Who?”
Samuel looked at Rafe.
Rafe looked stunned.
Not him.
Samuel said:
“Lucia.”
Dante’s breath stopped.
Lucia had controlled MOTH and ORCHID? Could be MOTH as chair inherited after infiltrating network. But post-death someone used account. She may have transferred credentials.
“To who?”
Samuel said:
“She told me only one person would inherit it if she died.”
Dante asked:
“Who?”
Samuel looked at Maribel through glass? That would be too sinister—child.
“No.”
Samuel said:
“Elena Rowan.”
Elena stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Samuel nodded.
“She chose you before you ever knew her.”
Lucia had known Elena because Isabel was handler and Caleb worked with Adrian. Perhaps Lucia designated Elena as independent successor due her skills and no Vale ties.
Elena whispered:
“I never met her.”
Samuel answered:
“She knew enough about you.”
Dante looked at Elena.
The maid had entered his house thinking she was chasing her husband’s death.
In reality, Lucia may have left her a role years earlier.
Then Samuel handed investigators an old sealed instruction packet from his vault.
Addressed:
TO ELENA ROWAN IF ORCHID FALLS.
Still sealed.
Dante said:
“Open it.”
Elena said:
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“Not here. Not until chain of custody is documented and police record it.”
Dante almost smiled.
Good.
No more private secrets.
They opened it in evidence room.
Inside:
A letter from Lucia.
Elena,
If you are reading this, I failed.
Your mother trained me to survive people who call control protection.
Your husband helped me copy the Mirror archive.
You are the only person in this chain who owes the Vale family nothing.
If Maribel is ever targeted, do not protect Dante from the truth.
Protect his daughter from all of us.
Underneath:
MOTH ACCESS IS NOT A PERSON.
IT IS A DEAD-MAN CHANNEL.
THE CURRENT USER IS WHOEVER HAS CALEB’S SECOND KEY.
Elena stopped breathing.
Caleb’s second key.
She thought the archive case was empty.
Maybe it had another key hidden.
Where?
Lucia’s letter ended:
Caleb said he would put it where Theo keeps what he is afraid to lose.
Elena looked up.
Theo.
Her six-year-old son.
At home, Theo had one place for treasures:
Inside a stuffed fox Caleb gave him before he died.
Elena whispered:
“Oh God.”
Someone had tried to pick Theo up from school because the key was with him.
May you like
The threat had never been only Maribel.
The two children each held half of the path to Lorenzo Vale’s archive.
