Chapter 9 - MOTH

The fire never reached the main house.
County firefighters contained it to the old server annex.
That was the good news.
The bad news:
Vincent Arno was gone.
No relation to Marcus from prior story; irrelevant. But name could confuse user only internally. Let's change to Vincent Arno. Need modify. We'll do later.
His car remained.
A service gate camera showed him leaving on foot wearing maintenance jacket.
Police searched estate grounds.
No immediate trace.
Dante hated himself for missing him.
Elena said:
“You did not miss him. He was not in the security list because the threat model was too narrow.”
Not comfort.
Diagnosis.
Vincent Arno had been Carter? no. Let's establish.
Vincent Arno, fifty-four, managed Vale family holding-company finances for eleven years.
Quiet.
Precise.
No criminal record.
No security authority.
No reason to appear in Lucia’s route investigation.
Yet MOTH_ADMIN used estate network while he was present.
Was he MOTH?
Evidence soon said yes.
His office computer contained a virtual machine configured to access Mirror Audit.
His encrypted drive contained old Javier Serrano files.
Mina’s father.
So Arno and Mina may have worked together.
Police found messages:
ARNO to MINA:
You get me succession access. I get you Javier truth.
Mina:
No children harmed.
Arno:
Then keep Dante predictable.
Mina:
Adrian is unstable.
Arno:
Useful until not.
That line chilled Elena.
Useful until not.
Maybe Adrian’s death.
Then:
Mina:
I will not kill him.
Arno:
You won’t have to.
Who did?
Colin?
He denied.
Ballistics connected Adrian’s wound to old Vale training weapon found hidden in Arno’s guest office ventilation shaft after fire.
Fingerprints wiped.
Trace DNA on grip:
Arno.
Strong evidence.
Not yet verdict.
Why would Arno kill Adrian?
Because Adrian was about to sell Mirror archive? According to recovered emails, Adrian had contacted an investigative consortium and also a rival crime family, playing both.
Caleb had been right.
Adrian was addicted to information.
Arno wanted archive for another purpose.
Successor Map.
What was it?
The audit layer revealed file metadata only.
SUCCESSOR MAP described every protected identity, shell company, judge, informant, and hidden beneficiary still connected to Lorenzo’s old empire.
Not blackmail content itself.
A roadmap.
Enough to seize networks.
Arno was not trying to destroy Mirror.
He wanted to inherit it.
Mina thought he would help expose Javier’s death.
He used her grief.
Again.
Mina broke when shown messages from Arno to Adrian:
MINA BELIEVES THIS IS ABOUT HER FATHER.
KEEP IT THAT WAY.
She stared.
Then asked for lawyer.
Hours later, through counsel, she cooperated.
She admitted:
Installing? She did not personally install cameras. She gave Colin schedules and access windows.
She knew cameras watched Maribel.
She told herself it was observation only.
She cloned Rafe badge.
She supplied old security weapon to Arno? She denied knowing he would use it.
She disabled backup power during blackout on Arno’s instruction, believing he intended to steal Caleb file and leave.
Then Adrian showed up unexpectedly through tunnel with Matteo.
Arno intercepted and killed him.
Mina heard shot.
Did nothing.
Then called police partly to limit further harm.
Complex.
Still culpable.
She said:
“I never wanted Maribel hurt.”
Dante answered later:
“People keep saying that after making her easier to reach.”
True.
Mina admitted Lucia had suspected her.
The call to Lucia on ambush night?
Rafe, not Mina.
Rafe did warn route.
But Mina saw Lucia’s route change in system and passed it to Arno.
Arno then relayed to who?
The attackers who killed Lucia.
So Arno had been involved in Lucia’s murder.
Why?
Lucia discovered he was using family holding accounts to fund Mirror remnants.
She planned to expose him.
Arno hired outside gunmen.
Mina did not know ambush would occur, she claimed.
She thought Arno wanted surveillance.
Evidence?
Messages:
MINA:
She changed route. River road.
ARNO:
Good.
Then twenty minutes later:
MINA:
What happened?
ARNO:
A problem closed.
Mina:
What did you do?
No response.
That supported her shock.
Not innocence in surveillance.
But maybe no murder intent.
Dante read those messages in silence.
For two years he had looked at Rafe.
Samuel.
Rival families.
Police.
Never finance.
Arno handled quiet money.
No gun.
No visible power.
He had inherited Lorenzo’s favorite lesson:
Information moves through whoever pays the bills.
Then Caleb.
Arno learned Caleb stole archive fragments and had built an audit backdoor.
He arranged Caleb’s brake sabotage through a contractor.
Payment records found.
Murder case.
Elena sat through briefing without speaking.
When detective said:
“Evidence strongly supports Arno ordering sabotage,”
she closed her eyes.
Three years of uncertainty.
Not closure.
Facts.
She asked:
“Who cut the line?”
A mechanic named Joel Marr.
Paid through shell company.
Now in prison on unrelated fraud? Let's make alive and arrested.
Police arrested him.
He confessed after counsel.
Said Arno told him Caleb was an extortionist threatening children.
Another lie to recruit harm.
He cut line expecting crash maybe death.
Serious charges.
Elena did not ask to meet him.
Good.
Then Theo asked why everyone kept talking quietly.
Elena answered age-appropriately:
“Police found the person they think arranged Dad’s crash.”
Theo stared.
“Did Dad crash because someone did something?”
“Yes.”
“Did Daddy know?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“I suspected.”
He cried.
Elena held him.
No revenge speech.
No:
We got him.
Because Arno was not caught yet.
Where was he?
Successor Map had been downloaded.
He needed Maribel’s biometric? No, he now had map file maybe enough? Perhaps map encrypted again.
The file was encrypted to Maribel/Dante lineage? Let's establish downloaded file remained useless without blood verification every open. So he needed Dante or Maribel.
He could target Dante.
Good.
Arno sent message to Dante from unknown number:
BRING CALEB’S KEYS.
COME ALONE.
I’LL GIVE YOU LUCIA’S ORIGINAL RECORDING.
Location:
Old Vale marina warehouse.
Elena said:
“No.”
Dante agreed.
That surprised her.
They gave message to police.
Set controlled operation.
Arno expected Dante’s pride.
Instead he got law enforcement.
At warehouse, tactical team found no Arno.
Only speaker.
Recorded Lucia.
Her voice.
Dante almost collapsed hearing it.
Lucia:
“If Dante hears this, it means I ran out of time.”
Pause.
“Do not let him turn grief into war.”
Dante laughed through tears.
She knew him.
Then:
“Vincent Arno is financing Mirror remnants.”
There.
Direct.
“I cannot prove he ordered the watchers yet.”
Then:
“Mina is compromised through her father. I think she can still choose.”
Interesting.
Lucia had not seen Mina as enemy entirely.
Then:
“Rafe is loyal but secretive. Samuel is loyal but afraid of Dante’s reactions. Matteo is reckless. Dante is impossible.”
Elena almost smiled.
Dante did.
Then Lucia’s voice softened.
“Maribel is not an heir to my mistakes.”
Dante shut his eyes.
The recording continued:
“If they come for the archive, destroy it.”
Arno had offered truth.
Instead he gave Dante an instruction against Arno’s own goal.
Why?
Maybe accidental.
Maybe taunt.
Maybe he expected Dante to reject Lucia’s wish.
At end:
“Dante, if you love me, do not keep this machine alive because you think information will keep Maribel safe.”
Silence.
Then warehouse lights came on.
A laser dot appeared on Dante’s chest.
Elena saw it first.
“Down!”
Police shouted.
Shot cracked.
Dante hit floor.
Bullet struck steel behind him.
Sniper position across marina.
Tactical team moved.
Arno ran.
Not finance man now.
Desperate.
He reached a boat.
Engine started.
Then stopped.
Because Matteo Vale stood on dock holding the ignition lanyard he had pulled from Arno’s boat while police approached from opposite side.
Reckless Matteo.
For once, useful.
Arno raised gun.
Dante shouted:
“Matteo, move!”
Matteo dropped flat.
Police fired? Better avoid killing; arrest.
Arno saw rifles on him.
Dropped weapon.
Hands up.
No cinematic death.
Alive.
Arrested.
Good.
He looked at Dante and said:
“You’re going to destroy what your father built?”
Dante answered:
“Yes.”
Arno smiled.
“You don’t even know what it can buy.”
Dante looked toward Elena.
Then toward police.
“That is why it has to go.”
For the first time, he meant it before knowing everything inside.
Arno’s arrest did not feel like victory.
That surprised Dante.
He had imagined for two years that the person behind Lucia’s death would become the center of his anger once found.
Instead, sitting in the back of a police vehicle before transport, Arno looked smaller than the system he had used.
A man.
Not a ghost.
Not an empire.
Elena understood.
“People are easier to arrest than patterns.”
Dante looked at her.
“Is that supposed to help?”
“No.”
Good.
The Mirror archive still existed.
The succession trust still existed.
Mina’s crimes still required court.
Matteo’s carelessness still needed consequences.
Rafe and Samuel still had years of secret decisions to explain.
Catching Arno solved a perpetrator.
It did not automatically make the Vale house safe.
That would require something Dante had spent most of his life avoiding.
Giving up control he technically had the power to keep.
The arrest report later called the marina operation a success.
Dante hated that word.
May you like
Nobody had won.
They had simply prevented one more body from joining the list.
