Chapter 7 - Luca's Secret

They found Luca in a small coastal town two hours north of Boston.

He was living under another name.

No security.

No bodyguards.

No mansion.

Just a quiet house near the water.

When Dante saw him, he stopped at the gate.

Luca looked older than the photograph.

But it was him.

His brother.

Alive.

Luca opened the door.

“You took your time.”

Dante almost laughed.

Then he crossed the yard and hugged him.

For several seconds, neither brother spoke.

Eight years of grief collapsed into one embrace.

When they separated, Luca looked at Gemma.

“You brought her.”

Dante nodded.

“She's part of this.”

Luca smiled.

“She always was.”

Inside the house, Luca explained everything.

The explosion had been arranged by Victor Hale.

But Victor had been working for someone else.

“Who?” Dante asked.

Luca looked at him.

“Salvatore Falcone.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

“I knew it.”

“No,” Luca said.

“You don't.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Salvatore was working for your father.”

Dante froze.

“What?”

“Your father wanted out.”

“Out of the organization?”

“Out of the war.”

Luca continued.

“He discovered that several families were planning to take control of Boston through the trust. Victor and Salvatore were supposed to help him dismantle the operation.”

“But they betrayed him.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I found out.”

“Then they tried to kill you.”

Luca nodded.

“Your father saved me.”

Dante stared.

“Why didn't he come back?”

“Because someone inside our family was still feeding information to Victor.”

“Who?”

Luca looked toward Gemma.

She whispered, “Someone you love.”

Dante remembered the letter.

His stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Luca didn't answer.

Instead, he handed Dante another photograph.

It showed Dante's mother.

She was standing beside a woman Dante recognized.

Bianca.

But Bianca was much younger.

Dante looked at the date.

Fifteen years earlier.

“That can't be.”

Luca nodded.

“Your mother and Lucia Falcone were friends.”

Dante stared.

“Then why did our families become enemies?”

“Because Salvatore discovered the friendship.”

Luca's voice became bitter.

“He used it.”

“For what?”

“To make your father believe the Falcone family had betrayed him.”

Dante's mind raced.

The feud.

The trust.

The wedding.

Everything had been manipulated.

Then Gemma noticed something.

“There's someone missing.”

Dante looked at her.

“Who?”

“Your father's old housekeeper.”

Dante frowned.

“What about her?”

“She signed several of the original trust documents.”

Luca looked at the file.

“Her name?”

“Margaret Bell.”

Luca's face changed.

“She knew where your mother went.”

Dante stood.

“Find her.”

Enzo's phone rang.

He answered.

Then his expression hardened.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We found Margaret.”

“Where?”

“She was taken from her apartment two hours ago.”

Dante's eyes went cold.

“By whom?”

Enzo hesitated.

“The order came from inside our organization.”

Dante understood.

The traitor was still moving.

And whoever it was knew exactly where they were.

Luca looked at him.

“You have to stop searching for the traitor.”

“Why?”

“Because the traitor is searching for you.”

Dante's phone buzzed.

A message.

ONE HOUR.

COME TO THE CATHEDRAL.

COME ALONE.

A photograph followed.

Gemma.

Bound to a chair.

Dante's face went blank.

Luca looked at the screen.

“It's a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then don't go.”

Dante put on his coat.

“They have Gemma.”

Luca stood.

“You're not going alone.”

Dante looked at him.

“No.”

For the first time since they were children, the brothers stood shoulder to shoulder.

“Neither are you.”

The photograph on Dante's phone was only the beginning.

He did not tell Gemma what he was thinking while they drove toward the cathedral.

He had already learned one rule that night: if an enemy wanted him angry, the safest response was patience.

So he called Enzo.

“Move everyone.”

“To where?”

“Every person loyal to us. No one goes home.”

“Understood.”

“Then put two teams around the cathedral.”

Enzo paused.

“You said you were going alone.”

“I changed my mind.”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“Good.”

Dante ended the call.

Gemma looked at him.

“You're learning.”

“I hate when you say that.”

“You should hear yourself.”

They arrived at the cathedral.

The rain had become heavy.

The old stone steps shone beneath the streetlights.

Dante stopped before the doors.

“Whatever happens, stay close.”

Gemma nodded.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and old candles.

The wedding decorations had not been removed.

The sight unsettled Dante more than he expected.

A marriage that had been designed to unite two families had become the place where their secrets would finally be exposed.

They walked toward the altar.

A screen flickered to life.

Gemma appeared on it.

Bound.

Dante immediately noticed the image was wrong.

“The camera angle.”

Gemma looked.

“It isn't live.”

“No.”

He studied the screen.

“The chair is from your old apartment.”

“Then whoever made it had access to my photographs.”

“Or access to your home.”

She swallowed.

A voice echoed from the balcony.

“You always were difficult to fool.”

Dante looked up.

A man stepped into the light.

Adrian Vale.

Dante recognized him.

The childhood friend.

The man who had attended his father's funeral.

The man who had once brought Luca expensive model cars.

Dante's hand tightened around his weapon.

“You.”

Adrian smiled.

“Yes.”

“You killed Victor.”

“Yes.”

“You took my father.”

“Yes.”

“You attacked Gemma.”

“No.”

Adrian looked toward the screen.

“Salvatore did.”

Dante frowned.

“Then why bring us here?”

“Because I wanted you to see how easily your family can be manipulated.”

Gemma stepped forward.

“You manipulated them too.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Your father was smarter than you realize.”

“What did he leave behind?”

Adrian smiled.

“The key.”

Gemma's eyes narrowed.

“What key?”

“The one you've carried your entire life.”

She understood.

“The watch.”

Adrian nodded.

Dante moved between them.

“You're not touching her.”

Adrian's expression softened.

“I never wanted to hurt her.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The archive.”

Dante laughed.

“You'll never get it.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“Then perhaps your mother will.”

Dante froze.

The cathedral doors opened behind them.

His mother entered.

She looked at Dante.

Then Adrian.

“You finally found us.”

Adrian raised his weapon.

Dante stepped forward.

“Don't.”

The weapon lowered.

Adrian looked almost relieved.

“I wanted you to understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That everyone you trusted was part of this.”

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Gemma.

Then his mother.

Then toward the balcony where Luca had just appeared.

“You're wrong.”

Adrian frowned.

“They're standing here because they chose to.”

Dante raised his weapon.

“And so did I.”

The lights went out.

Gunfire exploded through the cathedral.

The trap had finally begun.

The brothers spent the next hour arguing about the cathedral plan.

Luca wanted Dante to stay outside.

Dante refused.

Gemma wanted to come.

Luca objected.

Gemma crossed her arms.

“Everyone keeps deciding where I should stand.”

Dante looked at her.

“She has a point.”

Luca sighed.

“Fine.”

They built the plan around her.

If the screen showed a live image, Gemma would signal.

If it was recorded, Dante would know the enemy was bluffing.

If the lights went out, Enzo would secure the exits.

It was the first time Dante had planned a confrontation around survival instead of victory.

Gemma noticed.

“You're thinking differently.”

“I have people to lose now.”

She looked at him.

“You always did.”

He shook his head.

“Not like this.”

Before they left, Luca handed Dante an old photograph.

The brothers were children.

Their mother stood behind them.

Their father was smiling.

Dante stared at the picture.

“I don't remember this day.”

“You were angry.”

“At what?”

“You wanted a dog.”

Dante laughed.

“And you got one.”

“You did too.”

For a moment, they were boys again.

Then Luca said quietly, “Whatever happens tonight, don't let them make you hate our family.”

Dante looked at him.

“I won't.”

They entered the cathedral.

The doors closed behind them.

And the trap was waiting.

Before entering the cathedral, Dante looked at Luca.

“If we get separated, you take Gemma.”

Luca nodded.

“And if I don't come out?”

“Don't say that.”

“Promise me.”

Luca held his gaze.

“I promise.”

Dante looked at Gemma.

She was watching him.

“What?”

“You're finally learning how to trust people.”

He smiled.

“Don't tell anyone.”

She squeezed his hand.

“Your secret is safe.”

The cathedral doors opened.

Cold air swept through the entrance.

Dante stepped inside.

Whatever waited beyond the altar, he knew one thing.

He would not face it alone.

He paused before the first pew.

For one brief second, he remembered the wedding that should have happened there.

Then he looked at Gemma.

She was no longer the woman standing outside his life.

She was beside him.

That was enough.

He walked forward.

He took a breath and entered the dark cathedral, with Gemma beside him and his brother somewhere beyond the doors.

The doors closed behind them, and Dante knew there was no turning back.

Whatever waited inside, he would face it with the people he loved.

He refused to run from it.

Not tonight.

Not anymore.

Together.

At last.

May you like

No fear.

Together now.
