Chapter 8 - The Cathedral Trap

The cathedral had been prepared for a wedding.

Now it was empty.

White flowers lined the aisle.

Candles stood beneath the stained-glass windows.

The altar remained untouched.

Dante entered through the side door with Luca and Enzo behind him.

Gemma was nowhere visible.

“Spread out,” Dante whispered.

They moved through the nave.

Then the doors slammed shut.

A voice echoed through the cathedral.

“You always were difficult to control.”

Dante looked toward the balcony.

Salvatore Falcone stood there.

Beside him was Bianca.

Her hands were tied.

Dante's expression changed.

“Let her go.”

Salvatore smiled.

“You're still trying to save everyone.”

“Release her.”

“First, you sign the trust documents.”

Dante laughed.

“You think I'm stupid?”

“No.”

Salvatore raised a folder.

“I think you're predictable.”

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Gemma.

Alive.

Standing beside a car.

Dante stared.

“You lied.”

“Of course.”

Luca stepped forward.

Salvatore looked at him.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

“Impossible.”

Luca smiled.

“You should have buried me deeper.”

Salvatore backed away.

“Kill them.”

Men appeared from the side aisles.

Gunfire erupted.

Dante pulled Luca behind a stone pillar.

Enzo returned fire.

Bianca dropped to the floor.

Salvatore ran.

Dante wanted to follow.

But Gemma appeared at the rear entrance.

Alive.

She had escaped.

“Dante!”

He turned.

A gunman raised his weapon behind her.

Dante moved.

The shot struck the wooden column.

Gemma ran toward him.

He caught her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

He held her for a second too long.

She looked up at him.

“I knew you'd come.”

“I always will.”

Then Luca shouted.

“Dante!”

Salvatore was running toward the balcony exit.

Dante released Gemma and chased him.

At the top of the stairs, Salvatore turned.

“You don't understand!”

“You tried to kill my brother.”

“I was ordered to!”

“By whom?”

Salvatore's face twisted.

“Your mother.”

Dante stopped.

“No.”

“She wanted the trust.”

“Liar.”

Salvatore smiled.

“Ask her yourself.”

He jumped through the emergency exit.

Dante reached the balcony.

Too late.

Below, a car sped away.

Enzo approached.

“Boss.”

Dante turned.

“Find him.”

Then Bianca spoke.

“My mother.”

Dante looked at her.

“What?”

“My mother knew about all of this.”

“She did?”

“She told me once that if the wedding failed, I should find your mother.”

Dante stared.

“Where?”

Bianca shook her head.

“She said there was one place your father would never search.”

“Where?”

“Your childhood home.”

Dante closed his eyes.

The answer was obvious.

The house beneath the house.

They returned before dawn.

The hidden room had one final door.

Dante found it behind the portrait of his mother.

Inside was a bedroom.

A small lamp.

A chair.

Fresh flowers.

And a woman sitting beside the window.

Dante stopped breathing.

She turned.

Her hair was silver now.

Her face was older.

But her eyes were the same.

“Dante.”

He couldn't move.

“Mom?”

She stood.

Tears filled her eyes.

“My son.”

Dante crossed the room.

He fell into her arms.

For the first time in years, he was not a boss.

He was simply someone's child.

Behind them, Gemma quietly wiped away a tear.

Then Dante's mother whispered something.

“Your father is in danger.”

Dante pulled back.

“What?”

“He was captured last night.”

“By whom?”

She looked toward the door.

“By the person who has been controlling everything.”

“Who?”

Her voice dropped.

“Enzo.”

Silence.

Dante turned.

Enzo stood in the doorway.

His face was unreadable.

Then he raised his weapon.

Dante woke beneath the cathedral balcony with dust in his mouth and Gemma's hand gripping his sleeve.

“Are you hurt?”

He checked her quickly.

“No.”

“Then move.”

Luca was already helping their mother toward the side entrance.

Enzo shouted from the rear.

“Salvatore is running!”

Dante chased him.

They reached the balcony.

Salvatore stopped near the emergency exit.

“You don't know what you're doing.”

Dante raised his weapon.

“I know enough.”

“You'll destroy your own family.”

“My family was already destroyed.”

Salvatore laughed.

“Then ask your mother who ordered the explosion.”

Dante looked at her.

She was standing below.

Her face was devastated.

“I didn't order it,” she said.

Salvatore smiled.

“Not directly.”

Dante stared.

“What does that mean?”

His mother stepped closer.

“I created the operation that exposed the theft.”

“And the explosion?”

“Victor changed the plan.”

Salvatore shook his head.

“You still trusted the wrong people.”

Dante looked at him.

“Where is my father?”

Salvatore hesitated.

“Matteo has him.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Dante moved closer.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

Then a shot came from the side entrance.

Salvatore ducked.

Dante turned.

Adrian had escaped.

Enzo shouted.

“Boss!”

Dante ran toward the entrance.

Gemma followed.

“Dante!”

He stopped.

She held up the old watch.

The hidden compartment was open.

Inside was a memory card.

“The archive.”

Dante stared.

Then the cathedral doors slammed shut.

A second explosion shook the building.

Smoke filled the nave.

Dante grabbed Gemma.

“Back entrance.”

They ran.

Outside, a black vehicle waited.

Luca opened the door.

“Get in!”

Dante helped Gemma inside.

His mother followed.

Enzo jumped into the driver's seat.

The vehicle accelerated.

Behind them, the cathedral burned.

Dante looked back.

The place where his wedding had been supposed to happen was now a ruin.

He felt no grief.

Only clarity.

The old life was gone.

The new one would have to be built from the truth.

Luca looked at him.

“Warehouse.”

Dante nodded.

“Matteo has Dad.”

“Then that's where we go.”

Gemma held the memory card tightly.

“And this?”

Dante looked at it.

“That ends the war.”

No one spoke again.

Twenty minutes later, they reached the waterfront.

The warehouse lights were on.

A single figure stood outside.

Matteo.

He raised both hands.

“I want to talk.”

Dante stepped out.

“Where is my father?”

“Inside.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then open the door.”

Matteo nodded.

The final confrontation waited beyond it.

Dante woke beneath the cathedral balcony with dust in his mouth and Gemma's hand gripping his sleeve.

The final confrontation waited beyond it.

Dante did not fire when Enzo raised his weapon.

Instead, he said one word.

“Why?”

Enzo's face crumpled.

“They have my daughter.”

The room went silent.

Gemma stepped forward.

“Who?”

“Adrian.”

Dante lowered his weapon.

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“You should have trusted me.”

Enzo nodded.

“I know.”

Dante's mother stepped closer.

“I suspected something was wrong.”

Dante looked at her.

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I was trying to protect Enzo's daughter.”

The answer stunned him.

Everyone had been protecting someone.

Everyone had been hiding something.

That was the disease at the heart of the family.

Silence.

Dante finally understood.

The enemy had not needed weapons.

They had needed secrets.

He turned to Enzo.

“Where is the girl?”

“Harbor warehouse.”

“Then we go.”

They left the cathedral through the side entrance.

Luca stayed with their mother.

Gemma followed Dante.

“You're not going without me.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

At the harbor, the warehouse lights were still on.

A small figure appeared behind a window.

Enzo's daughter.

Alive.

Dante looked at the building.

“Stay behind me.”

Gemma shook her head.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Fine.”

They entered together.

Adrian was waiting.

And for the first time, Dante saw the man beneath the manipulation.

He looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not fearless.

Just broken.

“You wanted the truth,” Dante said.

Adrian nodded.

“Then you'll get it.”

Dante stepped forward.

“But you won't control what happens after.”

May you like

Adrian lowered his head.

“I know.”
