Chapter 7 - THE TRAITOR BESIDE HIM

Darkness swallowed the lighthouse.
Khloe heard Lorenzo move.
A gunshot cracked.
Then another.
Glass shattered above them.
Someone grabbed Khloe from behind.
She screamed and drove her elbow backward.
The grip loosened.
Thomas shouted.
“Khloe!”
Emergency lights flashed red.
Khloe saw Mateo near the door.
Gun raised.
Not at her.
At Lorenzo.
Lorenzo stood behind the stone central column.
“Mateo.”
His voice was dangerously calm.
“You have three seconds.”
Mateo laughed once.
“You always did love numbers.”
Khloe’s chest tightened.
Thomas pulled her behind the staircase.
“Stay down.”
“No.”
“Khloe.”
“I have spent a week staying down.”
She looked around.
Armed men appeared outside the windows.
Not Lorenzo’s.
Mateo’s.
Or Bellweather’s.
Lorenzo’s team had been separated during the blackout.
The lighthouse was surrounded.
Mateo stepped farther inside.
“I never wanted it this way.”
Lorenzo answered.
“You brought killers into my home.”
“That was Voss.”
“You gave them the plans.”
“Yes.”
Khloe stared.
The panic room.
The service tunnel.
The tracker.
Arthur’s escape.
Mateo had been everywhere.
Her stomach turned.
“Why?”
Mateo looked at her.
“Because Lorenzo would have destroyed Bellweather once he understood what it was.”
Lorenzo’s face remained cold.
“You think I wanted the archive?”
“You wanted control.”
“Of my own organization.”
“And Bellweather needs balance.”
Khloe almost laughed.
“Balance? People tried to murder me.”
Mateo’s jaw tightened.
“Because you were unpredictable.”
“That seems to be a recurring complaint.”
Thomas touched her shoulder.
“Khloe.”
She saw his fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
Mateo continued.
“My family served the Morettis for three generations. My uncle saved Thomas because Gabriel ordered it. Gabriel understood Bellweather could prevent wars.”
Thomas’s voice hardened.
“Gabriel wanted leverage.”
“So does everyone.”
“That does not make it peace.”
Lorenzo looked at Mateo.
“Where is Gabriel?”
Mateo said nothing.
Lorenzo understood.
“Alive.”
Khloe whispered.
“The Moretti who saved you.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
A voice came from the upper stairs.
“Finally.”
Everyone looked up.
An older man descended.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Lorenzo’s face changed.
For the first time, Khloe saw true shock.
“Uncle.”
Gabriel Moretti smiled.
“Nephew.”
He wore a dark coat and no visible weapon.
He did not need one.
The island belonged to him.
Gabriel looked at Khloe.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Khloe hated him instantly.
“You ruined my life.”
“Your father made choices.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You threatened a child.”
“I protected her by making her irrelevant.”
“You erased me.”
“I kept you alive.”
“You imprisoned me.”
“For a time.”
Fourteen years reduced to three words.
Khloe wanted to hit him.
Lorenzo spoke.
“You staged Thomas’s death.”
“Yes.”
“You used Voss.”
“She used me too.”
“You turned Mateo.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Mateo was never yours.”
The betrayal finally showed on Lorenzo’s face.
Small.
Painful.
Mateo looked away.
Khloe realized what decades of loyalty meant.
Mateo had been there when she was hired.
In the boardroom.
At the estate.
On the boat.
Every moment.
Lorenzo trusted almost no one.
He trusted Mateo.
Gabriel walked to the center of the room.
“Bellweather is collapsing.”
“Good,” Lorenzo said.
“You do not understand what follows.”
“War.”
“Yes.”
“Then let them fight.”
“Millions of dollars, ports, unions, law enforcement, politicians. You think violence remains inside family boundaries? It spills.”
Khloe looked at Thomas.
“Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“So Bellweather is evil and destroying it is also dangerous.”
Thomas nodded.
“Welcome to adulthood.”
She almost smiled.
Gabriel gestured toward her.
“That is why Khloe matters.”
“No,” Lorenzo said.
“She can access the archive.”
“She is not touching it for you.”
Gabriel’s expression sharpened.
“And you decide?”
Khloe stepped forward.
“No. I do.”
Everyone looked at her.
She was tired of powerful men speaking as if she were a device.
“I opened Bellweather once. I can do it again.”
Lorenzo turned.
“Khloe.”
She raised a hand.
“Conversation.”
He went silent.
Good.
She looked at Gabriel.
“You want access.”
“Yes.”
“You want me alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then my father and Lorenzo leave.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You bargain well.”
“I answer phones for criminals. I am learning.”
“Khloe,” Thomas said.
She ignored him.
Gabriel approached.
“You think you have leverage.”
“I am the leverage.”
His smile faded slightly.
“True.”
She held out her hand.
“Computer.”
Gabriel nodded to one of his men.
A laptop was placed on a table.
Khloe sat.
Her hands shook.
She entered the road.
The gate.
The door.
The archive opened.
Gabriel moved closer.
Mateo watched.
Lorenzo watched her.
She found the root directory.
Her father had built something else.
A failsafe.
She had seen it earlier but did not understand.
A command labeled SUNSET.
Thomas’s breath caught.
He knew.
Khloe looked at him.
He shook his head subtly.
Gabriel did not notice.
Khloe clicked into it.
A warning appeared.
EXECUTION WILL RELEASE SELECTED RECORDS TO DISTRIBUTED PUBLIC NODES.
Khloe’s heart pounded.
Bellweather’s ultimate threat.
Not deletion.
Exposure.
She turned the laptop slightly away.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“What are you doing?”
“Opening the financial layer.”
“That is not the financial layer.”
Khloe pressed enter.
The screen changed.
Gabriel lunged.
Too late.
A countdown began.
10:00.
Gabriel grabbed her wrist.
“What did you do?”
Khloe smiled despite terror.
“I spilled coffee.”
Lorenzo moved.
Chaos exploded.
He struck the guard beside him and grabbed the man’s weapon.
Thomas pulled Khloe down.
Gunfire tore through the lighthouse.
Mateo fired at Lorenzo.
Lorenzo returned fire.
Gabriel shouted to stop the upload.
Khloe crawled back to the laptop.
9:21.
A menu appeared.
SELECT RELEASE SCOPE.
ALL.
POLITICAL.
FINANCIAL.
VIOLENT CRIMES.
CUSTOM.
Khloe’s fingers hovered.
If she released everything, innocent families could be exposed.
Witnesses.
Victims.
People who had nothing to do with the crimes.
Her father crouched beside her.
“You cannot release all.”
“I know.”
“You need the crimes without the personal protection files.”
“How?”
“Filter by evidentiary class.”
She scanned categories.
Her brain caught patterns.
Codes.
V.
F.
P.
W.
Victim identities were tagged W.
Witnesses tagged P2.
She could exclude.
Bullets struck the table.
Lorenzo shouted her name.
“Working!”
“Faster!”
“I type ninety words a minute, not miracles!”
She built the release.
Confirmed criminal acts.
Financial corruption.
Public officials.
No witness addresses.
No family data.
No protected minors.
The timer hit 6:40.
Gabriel reached them.
Thomas stood.
The two older men collided.
Khloe stared.
Her father, who had spent years drugged and imprisoned, fought with desperate fury.
Gabriel struck him.
Thomas fell.
Khloe screamed.
Lorenzo crossed the room.
He hit Gabriel so hard the older man crashed into the wall.
Mateo aimed at Lorenzo.
Khloe saw it.
“Lorenzo!”
He turned.
Mateo fired.
Thomas shoved Lorenzo aside.
The bullet struck Thomas.
Khloe’s world stopped.
“Dad!”
Lorenzo shot Mateo in the shoulder.
Mateo fell.
Khloe crawled to Thomas.
Blood spread across his shirt.
“No.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Finish it.”
“No.”
“Khloe.”
She pressed her hands against the wound.
“You do not get to leave again.”
His eyes filled.
“Then do not let me.”
Lorenzo dropped beside them.
He tore fabric, pressed pressure to the wound, shouted for a medic.
The laptop beeped.
2:00.
Thomas grabbed Khloe’s wrist.
“Finish.”
She looked between him and the screen.
A choice.
Again.
Always a choice.
She pressed RELEASE.
The archive began uploading.
Gabriel screamed.
“No!”
Lorenzo’s men finally breached the lighthouse.
The fight ended quickly.
Gabriel was restrained.
Mateo lay bleeding but alive.
Thomas remained conscious.
Barely.
Khloe held his hand.
As the upload continued, Khloe realized the countdown was not the only clock running.
Every phone on the island began receiving alerts from banks and news organizations. Accounts were freezing. Emergency meetings were being called. People who had depended on Bellweather’s secrecy were trying to move money before investigators could react.
Mateo’s phone vibrated across the floor near him.
Khloe glanced at the screen.
Twenty-three missed calls.
Six from names she recognized from the archive.
Three from unknown numbers.
One from DOMINIC G.
Even while bleeding from the shoulder, Mateo laughed.
“Everybody suddenly wants to talk.”
Gabriel glared at him.
“You think this is funny?”
Mateo’s expression went flat.
“No. I think it is late.”
Khloe looked at the progress bar.
Thirty-eight percent.
Then forty.
Thomas lay under the medic’s hands, still conscious but fading.
“Dad.”
His eyes found hers.
“You always hated accounting,” he whispered.
Khloe laughed through tears.
“I still do.”
“You were good at it.”
“I was nine.”
“You corrected my grocery receipts.”
“They were wrong.”
A weak smile appeared.
For one instant, he looked like the father at the kitchen table.
Khloe leaned close.
“Why me?”
Thomas’s gaze moved toward the laptop.
“Because I needed someone they would underestimate.”
Khloe almost laughed again.
“That part worked.”
“No.” His voice weakened. “Because I knew you would know the difference between remembering something and belonging to it.”
Khloe frowned.
He squeezed her hand.
“The archive does not own you because you can open it.”
The words sank deeper than he could know.
For days, everyone had spoken about her memory as if it were an asset on a balance sheet.
Thomas reminded her it was hers.
Not Bellweather’s.
Not Lorenzo’s.
Not the government’s.
Hers.
Khloe looked at the screen.
Fifty-three percent.
Then at Gabriel.
For the first time, he looked frightened.
Not because of guns.
Because control was leaving him one percentage point at a time.
Outside, dawn began turning the ocean gray.
Phones around the room started buzzing.
One after another.
News alerts.
Emails.
Emergency calls.
Bellweather’s secrets were leaving the island.
Not all of them.
Enough.
Corrupt officials.
Criminal operations.
Bribes.
Murders.
Money trails.
Proof.
Khloe looked at Lorenzo.
“What happens now?”
He looked at the incoming messages.
“Everything changes.”
Then Thomas’s grip weakened.
Khloe turned back.
“Dad?”
His eyes closed.
The medic pushed her aside.
Lorenzo caught her as she fought to stay.
“No.”
“They need room.”
“No.”
“Khloe.”
She pressed both fists against his chest.
“Do not let him die.”
Lorenzo held her.
“I will not.”
“You cannot promise that.”
“No.”
“Then why did you?”
“Because you needed me to.”
She broke against him.
Behind them, the Bellweather archive continued its release.

Across New York, Washington, Boston, Miami, and half a dozen foreign capitals, powerful people woke to discover their darkest secrets were no longer secret.
And before sunrise, the first government arrest warrant bearing Lorenzo Moretti’s name was issued.
