Chapter 9 - SHE STOPPED RUNNING

The safe house went dark at 9:17 p.m.

Khloe remembered the time because of course she did.

She remembered the security map too.

Twelve exterior cameras.

Four stairwells.

Two concealed exits.

One service tunnel.

Three panic locks.

Lorenzo had asked if she could read a security map.

He should have asked if she could become one.

“East hall,” Khloe said.

Lorenzo followed.

Behind them, guards engaged the fake federal team at the front entrance.

Automatic gunfire shook the walls.

Thomas was upstairs recovering.

That fact controlled every decision in Khloe’s mind.

“No explosives near the north bedroom,” she told Lorenzo.

He looked at her.

“You are giving tactical orders now?”

“Yes.”

“Continue.”

She nearly smiled.

They reached a junction.

“Service passage behind the linen closet.”

Lorenzo moved the panel.

“How did you—”

“I saw it on the map.”

“Once.”

“Welcome to my brain.”

They entered the narrow passage.

Khloe used the radio.

“Ellis, move my father through exit three.”

Static.

Then Ellis answered.

“Copy.”

“Dante, south corridor is a decoy. There is a secondary breach route behind the garage.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You saw that?”

“The map showed reinforced points. Garage wall was weaker.”

Seconds later gunfire sounded from that direction.

Lorenzo smiled.

Khloe stared.

“Do not look proud right now.”

“I am.”

“That is distracting.”

They reached the basement.

Mateo’s holding room.

Lorenzo stopped.

Khloe understood.

“We need him.”

“No.”

“He knows Gabriel’s tactics.”

“He betrayed us.”

“Yes. He can betray Gabriel now.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

Khloe opened the door.

Mateo looked up.

“Bad?”

“Fake federal assault.”

He laughed.

“Gabriel.”

“Help us.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Mateo looked at him.

“You trust her.”

“Yes.”

The answer came instantly.

Khloe felt it.

Mateo did too.

“Then uncuff me.”

Lorenzo raised his gun.

“One wrong movement.”

“I know.”

Khloe unlocked Mateo.

Together they moved through the tunnel network.

Mateo explained Gabriel’s likely objective.

“He wants Khloe alive, Thomas if possible. Lorenzo dead.”

“Rude,” Khloe said.

“He always found you difficult.”

“I met him for thirty seconds.”

“Family instinct.”

They reached the service garage.

Two attackers entered.

Lorenzo and Mateo neutralized them.

Khloe stayed behind cover but watched everything.

One man carried a radio.

She grabbed it.

Voices.

“Asset team moving north.”

“Package located?”

“Negative.”

Khloe pressed transmit.

“Package moving east tunnel.”

Lorenzo stared.

She shrugged.

“Let them chase me somewhere I am not.”

Mateo smiled.

“You are terrifying.”

“I have been around bad influences.”

The attackers redirected.

That gave Ellis time to move Thomas.

The team regrouped near the concealed exit.

But when Khloe reached the woods outside, Thomas was missing.

Ellis lay unconscious near the path.

Khloe dropped beside him.

“Dad?”

No answer.

A vehicle accelerated in the distance.

Her blood turned cold.

“They took him.”

Lorenzo grabbed his phone.

Mateo checked the road.

“Gabriel.”

Khloe felt panic rise.

Then stopped it.

No.

She was done panicking on command.

“What does Gabriel want?”

“Bellweather,” Lorenzo said.

“He cannot access it without me.”

Mateo nodded.

“So he will trade Thomas.”

Khloe stood.

“Then we make the trade.”

Lorenzo’s face hardened.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Conversation.”

He exhaled.

“I hate that word.”

“I know.”

Mateo almost laughed.

Khloe continued.

“Gabriel expects me to come.”

“Yes.”

“So we control where.”

“He will choose.”

“Then we make him think he chose.”

Lorenzo studied her.

“What are you thinking?”

“Moretti Tower.”

Both men stared.

Khloe pointed toward Lorenzo.

“He wants your empire.”

Then to herself.

“He wants my access.”

Then toward the road where Thomas had disappeared.

“He has my father.”

Mateo understood.

“Tower has independent network infrastructure.”

“Yes.”

“And the original Bellweather corporate servers were routed through Moretti Maritime years ago.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“You remember that from the archive.”

“I remember everything.”

A plan formed.

Dangerous.

Maybe suicidal.

But for once, it belonged to Khloe.

At dawn, she called Gabriel.

He answered immediately.

“Smart girl.”

“Release my father.”

“Open Bellweather.”

“We meet at Moretti Tower.”

“No.”

“Then you do not get the archive.”

Silence.

“You think you control this?”

“No. I think we both need something.”

“Why the tower?”

“Because the master server can authenticate there.”

A lie.

Mostly.

Gabriel considered.

“Midnight.”

“88th floor.”

“You come alone.”

Khloe looked at Lorenzo.

“No weapons.”

Gabriel laughed.

“Now you insult me.”

“Fine. Bring whoever you want.”

She ended the call.

Lorenzo stared.

“You just invited Gabriel Moretti to my office.”

“You hired me.”

“That decision continues to have consequences.”

By evening, Moretti Tower was officially closed due to “electrical maintenance.”

Unofficially, Lorenzo’s remaining loyal men occupied strategic floors.

Mateo controlled freight access.

Khloe sat at her old desk.

The one outside Lorenzo’s office.

It felt like another life.

Coffee stain.

Broken heel.

Fear of Excel testing.

She touched the edge of the desk.

Lorenzo stood in the doorway.

“You can still walk away.”

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

“Would you let me?”

“Yes.”

“Even now?”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“Then I am staying.”

He approached.

“Why?”

“Because my father is here because of me.”

“No.”

“Because of Bellweather.”

“Yes.”

“Because of your family.”

“Yes.”

“Because of Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“You are improving.”

He touched her face.

“What happens after tonight?”

“If we survive?”

“Yes.”

“I get my apartment back.”

“It has no security.”

“I get an apartment.”

“With security.”

“We negotiate.”

“I buy the building.”

“Lorenzo.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Conversation.”

She laughed.

There was another reason Khloe chose the 88th floor.

She knew every inch of it.

For one week she had lived at that desk with the intensity of a woman who believed one misplaced staple might result in execution. She knew which cabinet drawer stuck in humid weather, which conference-room camera had a blind angle, which service door required a key card, and which elevator panel rebooted if the security system overloaded.

Lorenzo had mistaken her nervousness for inattention.

In reality, anxiety made her catalog exits.

On the afternoon before the meeting, she walked the floor alone and rebuilt it in her mind.

Seventy-three steps from her desk to the freight elevator.

Twenty-one to Lorenzo’s private office.

Four cameras across the main corridor.

Nine seconds for the executive elevator doors to close completely.

She moved furniture by inches.

Lorenzo found her shifting a decorative table.

“What are you doing?”

“Improving our odds.”

“The table?”

“If Gabriel’s men stand where armed people usually stand, this forces one of them two feet left.”

“And?”

“That puts him in camera three.”

Lorenzo stared at the table.

Then at her.

“You planned that from body position?”

“I spent three years working retail during college. People stand in predictable places.”

He looked almost impressed.

“Remind me never to rob a department store with you.”

“You would get caught stealing a suit because you would stop to criticize the tailoring.”

“That is possible.”

Khloe adjusted the table again.

The work steadied her.

This floor had once terrified her.

Now she was weaponizing every ridiculous detail she had noticed while trying not to get fired.

By midnight, she no longer felt like prey returning to the scene of a crime.

She felt like the person who knew the room best.

At midnight, the elevator doors opened.

Gabriel stepped out.

Four armed men followed.

Thomas was between them.

His face was bruised.

Khloe’s heart broke.

But he was standing.

Alive.

Gabriel smiled.

“Open the archive.”

Khloe sat at the desk computer.

Lorenzo stood across the room, apparently unarmed.

Mateo was nowhere visible.

Gabriel noticed.

“Where is Russo?”

“Recovering from betrayal,” Lorenzo said.

Gabriel laughed.

Khloe entered the access sequence.

The archive opened.

Gabriel moved closer.

“Transfer administrator control.”

Khloe clicked through menus.

“Release my father.”

“When I have control.”

“No.”

Gabriel put a gun against Thomas’s head.

Lorenzo’s body went still.

Khloe’s hands stopped shaking.

Something inside her became quiet.

She looked at Gabriel.

“You think because I am anxious, I am weak.”

He smiled.

“Are you not?”

“No.”

She pressed one key.

Every screen on the 88th floor changed.

Cameras activated.

Live feeds.

Multiple government servers.

Recorded transmission.

Gabriel’s face appeared across them.

“What did you do?”

Khloe smiled.

“The tower has excellent video conferencing.”

Outside, sirens began approaching.

Real ones.

Gabriel turned toward Lorenzo.

“You called federal agents?”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“Khloe did.”

Gabriel pointed the gun at her.

Then Mateo stepped from behind the wall.

Gun raised.

“Do not.”

Gabriel stared.

“You disappoint me.”

Mateo answered.

“I learned from the best.”

Gunfire erupted.

Khloe dropped behind the desk.

Thomas lunged sideways.

Lorenzo moved.

Seconds stretched.

One attacker fell.

Another surrendered.

Mateo was hit in the leg.

Gabriel ran toward the private elevator.

Khloe saw him.

She also saw Lorenzo chase.

“Wait!”

Too late.

The elevator doors closed around both men.

Khloe jumped up.

“Where does it go?”

“Roof,” Mateo gasped.

Khloe ran to the stairs.

Ninety floors.

Absolutely not.

She saw the service controls.

Elevator override.

Her fingers moved.

Stop.

Lock.

Return.

The system rejected.

Executive authentication required.

Khloe remembered Lorenzo’s six-digit code from the underground garage.

481930.

She entered it.

Access granted.

She stared.

Of course Lorenzo reused a security code.

Even mafia bosses had bad password habits.

She commanded the elevator to stop at floor ninety-two.

Not roof.

The doors opened remotely.

Lorenzo and Gabriel were fighting inside.

Khloe used the fire suppression system.

Foam blasted the elevator.

Both men slipped.

Gabriel lost the gun.

Lorenzo stared at the camera.

Khloe spoke through the intercom.

“You are welcome.”

He almost laughed.

Federal tactical teams flooded the upper floors.

Real agents.

Gabriel was arrested.

Thomas was safe.

Mateo survived.

By 3:00 a.m., Lorenzo Moretti stood in his own office surrounded by federal agents.

An agent approached with handcuffs.

Khloe’s heart stopped.

The warrant.

Lorenzo looked at her.

Calm.

He held out his hands.

Khloe stepped forward.

“No.”

The agent blocked her.

“Ma’am.”

“He helped.”

“Step back.”

Lorenzo spoke softly.

“Khloe.”

She looked at him.

“Do not make this harder.”

Her eyes burned.

“You said we would talk after.”

“We will.”

“You cannot promise that.”

He smiled.

“Then I should stop making promises I cannot keep.”

The cuffs closed around his wrists.

The agents led him toward the elevator.

Khloe stood beside the desk where she had once worried about being fired.

Lorenzo turned before the doors closed.

“Better shoes.”

She laughed through tears.

Then he was gone.

May you like

And for the first time since she met him, Khloe Higgins was completely free.

She hated it.
