Chapter 4 - THE MAN DANTE CALLED BROTHER

Dr. Julian Cross did not survive one hour of scrutiny.

Not physically.

Professionally.

St. Matthew’s compliance office suspended him that afternoon after federal agents served document requests connected to the supply fraud.

He denied wrongdoing.

Good.

Suspension is not conviction.

But his name appeared all over Tommaso’s files.

Payments.

Vendor approvals.

Emergency purchasing waivers.

And one email from Rafael Moretti:

JC has the blind corridor. AC maintains logs.

JC:

Julian Cross.

AC:

Aaron Carter.

Blind corridor:

The inventory windows Aaron built.

---

I stared at the email from Maya’s office.

“Aaron worked with him.”

“Apparently.”

“Then why is Aaron pretending he was only trapped by Rafael?”

“Because cooperation usually begins with a favorable autobiography.”

Good.

---

Julian’s lawyers said the payments were consulting rebates approved by hospital finance.

Some were.

Others went through a private company owned by his brother.

Potential kickbacks.

Records.

No instant certainty.

---

Then Tommaso Riva finally spoke.

With counsel.

With prosecutors.

With Dante’s lawyers present only where permitted.

He also asked to speak to me.

I said no.

Then yes, through video with Maya.

He looked terrible.

Stitches.

Purple cheek.

One eye yellowing.

Dante’s men had done that.

I did not forget.

Tommaso said:

“I’m sorry I put the card on you.”

“You should be.”

“I thought your surname was Carter.”

“It is.”

“I thought you were Aaron’s wife.”

“I never married him.”

“I know now.”

“Why did that make me a good hiding place?”

“Because I had seconds.”

Bad answer.

He knew it.

“I thought Rafael’s men would search me. I didn’t know if Dante was with them.”

“You thought Dante might be the traitor.”

“Yes.”

There.

---

Tommaso had audited Moretti Clinical Logistics after inventory losses appeared too consistent.

He found Rafael and Julian.

Then Aaron’s old access signatures.

He learned Aaron had not simply fled.

He had extorted Rafael for $180,000 and taken a copy of evidence.

Rafael paid because he feared Dante finding out.

After Aaron left:

Rafael kept scheme going with a new IT contractor.

Julian kept hospital approvals.

Tommaso copied files.

Then Marco Bellini’s security team caught him in the hospital garage because Rafael had reported him as thief.

Who ordered interrogation?

Dante.

There.

Dante suspected Tommaso stole proprietary data to sell.

He did not verify first.

Good to know.

---

“Why were you pleading?” I asked.

Tommaso looked away.

“Because they had already hit me.”

“Did Dante hit you?”

“No.”

“Did he tell them to?”

“No.”

“Did he stop them?”

“After he saw blood.”

There.

Same as Dante admitted.

---

Then Tommaso said:

“Dante calls me brother.”

I stared.

“What?”

“We grew up together. My father drove for his father. Dante paid for my college.”

That made the garage scene worse.

He had a man he called brother on his knees.

Power does that when trust becomes property.

---

Dante did not contact me after Tommaso’s interview.

I contacted him.

“Come to Maya’s office.”

He came alone except one guard outside.

Good.

I said:

“You called Tommaso brother.”

“Yes.”

“You had him tied up.”

“Yes.”

“Explain that.”

His face tightened.

“I thought he betrayed me.”

“So brother means loyal until suspected.”

“No.”

“It looked like it.”

“Yes.”

There.

“I grew up believing betrayal canceled every prior bond.”

“That’s convenient for the powerful person deciding what counts as betrayal.”

“Yes.”

He looked exhausted.

“I am not going to defend it.”

Good.

---

Then I said:

“You called me sister.”

His eyes lifted.

There.

“That bothered me.”

“Why?”

I almost said because I liked you.

Ridiculous.

Instead:

“Because you use family words like security classifications.”

His expression changed.

Accurate.

“Protected.

Brother.

Sister.

Then when someone violates the category, you decide what happens.”

He looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

“I’m not your sister.”

“No.”

The answer came quietly.

Something shifted.

Not romance yet.

Recognition.

---

He said:

“I used the word because I needed something safe.”

“Safe for who?”

“Me.”

There.

My heart betrayed me.

“Why?”

He did not answer.

Good.

Not yet.

---

Federal agents executed search warrants at Moretti Clinical Logistics and St. Matthew’s procurement offices.

Dante cooperated.

Rafael did not.

He disappeared.

Private jet records showed a flight plan filed for Montreal, then canceled.

His phone last pinged near Lake Forest.

Chicago.

Still local.

Danger.

---

Police moved Lily’s daycare temporarily? Better daycare improved security. I kept Lily with my mother? Wait Emma story says everyone knows single mother, father vanished; maybe her mother alive? Could be. We haven't mentioned. Could use Sarah or licensed temporary nanny. Better keep confidential daycare and security. Court aware.

I did not accept Dante’s men.

I accepted a licensed protective service arranged through hospital and police consultation, paid by St. Matthew’s employee safety fund because threat arose from workplace case.

Independent.

Good.

Dante hated it.

He said nothing.

Better.

---

Aaron’s supervised visits continued.

Second visit:

Lily showed him Pepper.

He brought a puzzle.

No incident.

Third:

He asked supervisor whether he could take a photo.

Allowed under guidelines.

Lily said no.

He accepted.

Good.

Maybe he had capacity to learn.

Then outside the center, while I waited by my car, Aaron approached beyond the required distance.

Supervisor immediately called him back.

He stopped.

But before turning, he said:

“Emma, we need to talk about us.”

“There is no us.”

His face tightened.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“Three years doesn’t erase six.”

“No. It changes them.”

He glanced toward the licensed guard at my car.

“Moretti has you surrounded.”

“No.”

“You think he doesn’t want something?”

“Everyone wants something.”

Including you.

He stepped closer.

The supervisor said:

“Mr. Carter.”

Aaron stopped again.

Then:

“I left because I loved you.”

I looked at him.

“You left because you were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Those are not the same sentence.”

He flinched.

Good.

---

Then Dante’s car pulled into the public parking lot.

Why?

He was meeting Maya? No, inappropriate coincidence. Better he had a scheduled interview with child? No. Let's not make contrived. Could be he arrived because family-services center shares building with his lawyer? Hmm.

Better title moment later.

---

That night Aaron sent through parenting app:

I know you’re angry. But you were mine before any of this.

I stared.

Maya preserved it.

I replied only:

Do not refer to me as property. Parenting communication only.

His response:

You know what I mean.

No.

I did.

That was the problem.

---

Rafael contacted Dante the next morning.

One call.

Recorded with law-enforcement consent? Dante notified investigators and arranged. Good.

Rafael said:

“Give me Tommaso’s copy and this ends.”

Dante:

“It’s evidence.”

Rafael laughed.

“You sound domesticated.”

Then:

“The nurse is the weak point.”

Dante went silent.

Rafael continued:

“Aaron always was sentimental about her. You too, apparently.”

My skin crawled when I later heard the authorized recording.

Dante said:

“Leave Emma and Lily out.”

Rafael laughed again.

“You call her sister yet?”

Silence.

Then:

“That is what you do when you’re afraid to want something.”

The call ended.

There.

Someone else said it first.

Not Dante.

He sent the recording to investigators.

He did not call me.

Good.

I listened through Maya because it involved threat.

The sister line stayed in my head.

---

Two days later, Aaron requested a private meeting with me through counsel.

Purpose:

disclose information affecting Lily’s safety.

Maya agreed only at law office with lawyers.

He came.

No charm.

No father performance.

He placed a photograph on table.

Rafael Moretti and Julian Cross at St. Matthew’s gala three years earlier.

Between them:

Dante.

I looked at Aaron.

“What?”

“He knew Julian.”

“Of course he knew a hospital executive.”

“He knew more.”

Aaron slid an email.

Dante to Julian:

Rafael says you can keep procurement quiet. I don’t want another audit headline before bond issue. Handle it.

My chest tightened.

Date:

two months before Aaron vanished.

Not proof Dante knew fraud.

But he told Julian to keep procurement quiet.

“What does ‘quiet’ mean?”

Aaron leaned forward.

“You know.”

“No. I want evidence.”

His eyes flashed.

“You’re defending him.”

“No. I’m refusing to let you interpret a sentence for me.”

Good.

Aaron sat back.

Then:

“I can prove he knew enough.”

“Give it to investigators.”

“I will.”

“What do you want from me?”

His gaze softened.

“You.”

There.

Maya’s posture changed.

Aaron continued:

“And Lily.”

I felt sick.

“We can leave. I have money. Canada, maybe Europe. Away from Moretti.”

“No.”

“Emma—”

“No.”

“He will drag you into his world.”

“You already did.”

That hit.

Good.

Aaron’s face hardened.

“You think he sees you as some sister?”

I said nothing.

“He doesn’t.”

Still nothing.

“He wants you.”

My pulse moved.

Not useful.

Aaron leaned closer.

“And I am not going to stand by while another man takes what is mine.”

The room went cold.

Maya said:

“Mr. Carter, meeting is over.”

Aaron looked at me.

“I’m your family.”

“No.”

“You loved me.”

“Yes.”

Past tense.

He heard it.

For the first time since returning, Aaron looked truly afraid.

Not of Dante.

Of the fact that disappearing had changed something he believed would wait forever.

Before Dante left Maya’s office that day, he paused at the door.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“If I ever call you family again, you can ask me what I mean.”

I stared.

“That sounds dangerously self-aware.”

“I have counsel.”

Gabriel Sloane, behind him, said:

“I would like the record to reflect I did not teach him humor.”

I laughed despite myself.

Dante looked almost relieved.

May you like

Then he left.

The room felt quieter than it should have.
