Chapter 5 - THE DAY HE SAID SHE WAS NOT HIS

The email hurt Dante.

Not criminally at first.

Morally.

He admitted writing it.

We met with Maya and his lawyer, Gabriel Sloane, present.

“What did ‘keep procurement quiet’ mean?” I asked.

Dante looked directly at me.

“There had been complaints that Moretti Clinical Logistics was receiving too many emergency purchase waivers.”

“Why?”

“Because Rafael was pushing exclusivity.”

“Legal?”

“Some tactics were aggressive but legal. Others I did not ask about.”

“There it is again.”

“Yes.”

“Quiet?”

“I wanted Julian to resolve complaints internally before our bond refinancing.”

“So hide scandal.”

“Yes.”

There.

Not fraud knowledge.

Still suppression.

“Did Aaron show you anything before he left?”

“No.”

“Did Julian?”

“No.”

“Did Rafael?”

“Only profitability reports.”

“You rewarded him.”

“Yes.”

Good.

---

Investigators later found Dante had not seen the resale spreadsheets before Tommaso’s audit.

No evidence he knew Aaron had been paid.

But the email supported a broader pattern:

Dante valued silence.

Rafael exploited silence.

Again:

system.

---

Dante voluntarily stepped away from operational control of Moretti Clinical Logistics.

Independent board appointed outside CEO.

Forensic audit.

Whistleblower line outside family.

Procurement disclosures to hospitals.

No speech.

Good.

---

Then the title moment came in a courthouse corridor.

Not planned.

Aaron’s family case had a review hearing.

Dante was in the same building for a subpoena matter in the federal investigation.

Chicago has too many courts and apparently not enough hallways.

I exited the family courtroom with Maya.

Aaron stood near elevators with Peter Sloan.

Dante approached from opposite end with Gabriel.

Everyone stopped.

Ridiculous.

Aaron looked at him.

“So this is how it is.”

Dante said nothing.

Aaron looked at me.

“Emma, come with me.”

“No.”

“We need to talk.”

“No.”

Aaron’s jaw tightened.

Then he said the sentence that changed something I had been refusing to name.

“She was mine before you ever saw her.”

The hallway went silent.

Dante’s face changed.

Not rage.

Something colder.

He stepped forward one pace.

Then stopped.

“She is not yours.”

Aaron laughed.

“You think she’s yours?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Dante looked at me.

“Emma belongs to herself.”

There.

No claim.

No threat.

Aaron’s face hardened.

“You’ve been playing brother for months.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Because you’re afraid to admit you want her.”

Silence.

My heart slammed.

Maya looked at ceiling like she deserved hazard pay.

Dante did not answer Aaron.

Good.

He answered me.

“I am not discussing that because he demanded it.”

There.

Better.

Then he stepped aside.

“Do you want me to leave?”

I stared at him.

“Yes.”

He left.

Just like that.

No territorial showdown.

Aaron watched him go, almost disappointed.

I turned to Aaron.

“That is the difference.”

“What?”

“He leaves when I ask.”

The words hit both of us.

Aaron looked away.

---

The judge later modified parenting communication because Aaron’s repeated personal messages violated boundaries.

Parenting app limited to child topics.

No direct attempts at reconciliation during supervised contact process.

Good.

No punishment for feelings.

Boundary for conduct.

---

Outside court, Maya asked:

“So.”

“No.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were going to.”

“I was going to ask whether you want coffee.”

“Liar.”

She smiled.

---

Dante did not call.

A week.

Two.

He stayed away.

I hated it.

There it was.

Not sister.

Not family category.

Want.

Mine.

---

I called him.

“Coffee.”

He said:

“Are you asking?”

“Yes.”

“Then yes.”

We met at a diner.

No bodyguards inside.

Dante looked uncomfortable under fluorescent lights.

Good.

I said:

“Do you want me?”

He nearly choked on coffee.

Direct.

“Yes.”

There.

“How long?”

He took time.

“Long enough that I used sister because I thought desire would make protection dishonest.”

“That sentence needs therapy.”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

“Did you think calling me sister made it clean?”

“Yes.”

“And did it?”

“No.”

Good.

---

I said:

“You are still connected to the investigation.”

“Yes.”

“You witnessed me in a criminal event.”

“Yes.”

“You provided temporary safety.”

“Yes.”

“You are not my employer.”

“No.”

“You do not control Lily’s custody.”

“No.”

“You have no financial tie to me.”

“No.”

“Then why are we not dating?”

His eyes held mine.

“Because I still have things to answer for.”

There.

He was right.

---

Dante’s lawyer had told him prosecutors were reviewing unlawful detention of Tommaso and prior commercial bribery.

The garage mattered.

He could face charges.

He did not want romance to become pressure while I remained a witness to one event.

Good.

Annoying.

Good.

“So what do we do?”

“We wait until your witness role is finished.”

“And then?”

“If you want, I ask.”

There.

My chest warmed.

Dangerous.

“Properly.”

“Yes.”

“No marriage.”

His mouth shifted.

“I wasn’t planning—”

I stared.

“Right.”

Good.

---

Meanwhile, investigators found the gray rabbit.

Not with Aaron.

At Julian Cross’s lake house.

Search warrant based on his communications with Rafael.

The rabbit’s seam had been opened.

Inside:

empty.

The drive was gone.

Julian claimed Aaron gave him the rabbit years ago.

False?

Maybe.

Aaron admitted later he had sent a contractor to retrieve it from my apartment recently.

The contractor delivered it to Julian because Aaron and Julian had a secret deal.

There.

Aaron was not simply informant.

He had been negotiating.

---

The deal:

Aaron would testify against Rafael.

Julian would give him documents minimizing Aaron’s role.

In exchange, Aaron helped recover the old rabbit drive because it contained raw logs that could expose Julian too.

So Aaron wanted evidence both to cooperate and to control what cooperation revealed.

Again:

favorable autobiography.

---

When confronted, Aaron amended his proffer.

He admitted:

He created blind windows knowingly.

He accepted $180,000 to remain silent.

He later tried to extort Julian and Rafael.

He sent someone to retrieve the rabbit after learning I had returned to St. Matthew’s.

He went to daycare because he wanted Lily—and because he feared the rabbit might still be with her belongings.

I felt sick.

He had mixed fatherhood and evidence retrieval.

Even if he truly missed Lily, motive was contaminated.

---

Family court paused in-person visits pending updated evaluation after these admissions.

Not terminated automatically.

Good.

Lily asked:

“Why no Aaron day?”

“Adults are checking safety.”

“Did I do bad?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Always.

---

Rafael remained missing.

Julian was indicted for fraud, kickbacks, obstruction.

Aaron faced charges but continued cooperating.

Tommaso became key witness.

Dante?

Still waiting.

Then a grand jury subpoena arrived for me about the parking garage.

I was a witness.

The reason Dante and I were not dating became official paper.

I hated it.

Also respected it.

---

Before my grand jury appearance, he sent one message:

Tell the truth. Even the parts that hurt me.

I replied:

Obviously.

He wrote:

Good.

I stared.

Then:

STOP.

For the first time in weeks, he sent a laughing emoji.

A mafia boss with an emoji.

Terrifying.

I went to court and told the truth.

Tommaso was bound.

Two men struck him.

Dante was present.

He did not order the blows in my hearing.

He did not stop them immediately.

He allowed me to examine Tommaso.

He later sent him for CT.

He gave the microSD to police once discovered.

All true.

No hero.

No monster.

A man.

And whatever happened next would have to survive that.

My grand jury appearance was not the only place truth became expensive.

St. Matthew’s internal investigators asked whether I had ever seen Julian Cross pressure nurses to alter supply records.

No.

Whether I had noticed shortages.

Yes, occasionally.

Were they tied to Julian?

I did not know.

Good.

I refused to turn memory into certainty just because people finally wanted a villain.

One incident bothered me.

Six months earlier, a central-line kit had been missing during a late shift. We found a substitute from another floor within minutes. No patient harm.

At the time, everyone blamed inventory.

Now investigators asked whether it might connect to the resale scheme.

Maybe.

I said maybe.

That word mattered.

Too many people in this case had built whole systems by turning maybe into convenient fact.

---

The hospital also reviewed whether I should remain on leave.

I asked to return in a restricted clinical role once security cleared.

HR hesitated.

I said:

“I do not want being targeted to become the reason I lose my profession.”

They agreed to a phased return with parking escort and schedule privacy.

No Dante money.

No special donor influence.

Good.

The first night back, I stood in the same garage near the pillar where Tommaso had knelt.

My hands shook.

I almost took the elevator back upstairs.

Then Sarah appeared beside me.

“You want me to walk?”

“Yes.”

No bravery performance.

We walked together.

The concrete smelled the same.

Nothing happened.

That was the point.

---

Dante learned I had returned because it became relevant to his court schedule? No. He learned only when I told him during our diner coffee.

“You went back.”

“Yes.”

“Was that wise?”

I stared.

He corrected immediately.

“Was that what you wanted?”

“Yes.”

“Then good.”

“Better.”

He smiled.

May you like

Small corrections.

That was how we learned each other before we were allowed to call it dating.
