Chapter 3 - THE LEAK WAS DESIGNED TO LOOK LIKE ME

Administrative leave lasted six days.
I hated every hour.
Julia loved the opportunity to order me around.
“Sleep.”
“I slept.”
“Six hours is not sleep after what happened.”
“It is literally sleep.”
Good.
My sister had always been immune to Dominic’s reputation.
She met him twice.
Called him “the human tax audit.”
He heard once.
Did not laugh.
I did.
Good.
Independent digital forensics examined my devices.
The keylogger had been installed eleven days earlier.
Entry window matched one evening when I attended a foundation dinner.
Building camera archive?
Deleted.
Not normal retention.
Someone with property-management access removed one hour.
There.
Police subpoenaed vendor.
Good.
The remote tool installed same night.
So this had been planned.
My login activity:
small document views over eleven days.
Nothing obvious.
Then west server access night of Marcus dinner.
Why wait?
Because purpose not theft alone.
Frame.
Good.
Company counsel contacted my lawyer.
Yes, I hired one.
An employment attorney named Priya Shah.
No Caruso ties.
Dominic’s company offered to pay.
I declined.
Good.
Priya requested:
all logs.
internal communications naming me.
security policy.
monitoring disclosures.
records of Dominic’s instruction regarding my device.
That last one made him uncomfortable.
Good.
He complied.
The audio system.
It turned out Dominic had not actively opened my microphone himself at park.
A security analyst received automated alert from company device geofence because I left during a period when external threat level was elevated after a Vitelli dispute.
The analyst activated audio for forty-one seconds.
Then called Dominic.
Dominic asked to hear recording.
There.
He chose.
Good.
The recording captured:
me crying.
Marcus telling me I was not replaceable.
dinner invitation.
Forty-one seconds.
That was enough.
I felt exposed.
Priya said:
“Company may have contractual basis. That does not make practice reasonable in every context.”
Good.
We filed internal grievance.
Not lawsuit yet.
Important.
Dominic suspended covert audio policy pending review.
Good.
No defense.
Then leak.
Internal forensic firm found five confidential drafts exported over three weeks.
All under my username.
But the access signatures were wrong.
My normal login pattern:
desktop workstation plus phone token.
Leak sessions:
remote browser + admin recovery token.
Same as apartment intrusion.
Good.
Aaron Cole, IT director, had generated recovery tokens.
Police found him.
Not fugitive.
He was in hospital.
Car accident.
There.
Concussion.
Broken arm.
His car had been hit at intersection the night my apartment was breached.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
Good.
When awake, Aaron requested attorney.
He said he did not generate tokens.
His admin credentials compromised.
There.
Layer.
Who could compromise him?
Someone with root access or physical key.
Maybe deputy IT manager:
Seth Nolan.
Seth disappeared two days after.
There.
Police searched.
Good.
But then Marcus’s information.
Priya obtained through company investigation a message:
Vitelli negotiator wrote to Marcus:
YOUR GIRL IS GETTING NERVOUS.
My blood went cold.
Your girl.
Who?
Maybe me.
Date:
two days before park.
There.
Marcus had not told me.
I called him.
No answer.
Then he returned through Priya? Better I ask counsel arrange meeting.
Good.
We met in Priya’s office.
Not restaurant.
Marcus brought his attorney.
That alone told me enough.
I placed printed message.
“What is this?”
Marcus looked.
No denial.
“It refers to an analyst on Vitelli side.”
“Named Diana?”
“No.”
“Then why would I think—”
“Because later they used your initials.”
There.
He handed over other messages voluntarily.
Vitelli contact:
D.P. HAS ACCESS?
Marcus:
SHE HAS ACCESS TO EVERYTHING DOMINIC SIGNS.
Vitelli:
CAN SHE BE TURNED?
Marcus:
NO.
I stared.
There.
“You discussed me.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus looked miserable.
“Because Vitelli asked whether you could be bribed.”
“And you said no.”
“Yes.”
“Why not tell Dominic?”
“I did.”
I froze.
“What?”
Marcus leaned back.
“Three weeks ago.”
There.
Dominic knew Vitelli asked about me.
That likely triggered suspicion.
Good.
“Did you tell him they thought I could be turned?”
“Yes.”
“And he still kept me in place without telling me.”
“Yes.”
Anger.
Good.
Then Marcus said:
“I asked you to dinner partly because I wanted to know if someone had approached you.”
There.
Finally.
Not pure romance.
“I thought if I asked directly, you’d shut down.”
“You were right.”
“I know.”
“That does not justify manipulating me.”
“No.”
Good.
“Did you also like me?”
“Yes.”
I believed.
Maybe.
That made it more complicated, not better.
Good.
“Did you know Dominic was listening in park?”
“No.”
“Did you know he suspected me?”
“I suspected he did after our conversation three weeks ago.”
There.
“So you used my emotional state to investigate.”
Marcus flinched.
“Yes.”
Good.
No euphemism.
I sat back.
“Thank you.”
He looked surprised.
“For what?”
“For finally saying it accurately.”
Good.
Then:
“Dinner was a mistake.”
“Yes.”
“Do not ask me again.”
His face changed.
“Understood.”
Good.
That ended romantic triangle for now.
Important.
Then the deeper message.
Vitelli:
SHE HAS ACCESS TO EVERYTHING DOMINIC SIGNS.
Who told them that?
Marcus never said so before.
He admitted it was general knowledge in business circles.
Maybe.
But exact understanding of my role came from inside.
Good.
Company forensics then found a pattern.
The leaked drafts all contained one harmless typo.
Not mine.
I noticed because I had corrected it each time in final versions.
“intergrated” instead of “integrated.”
The drafts stolen were versions before my correction.
That meant leak occurred before documents reached me? Wait under my username after? Let's design: templates generated by Victor Rinaldi used typo. My final corrected. Leaked versions had typo, despite access under my user. That suggests documents were pulled from shared staging area then copied via my credentials, not from my own edited files.
Good.
Who authored staging drafts?
COO Victor Rinaldi.
There.
Victor had been with Dominic ten years.
Trusted.
Calm.
Married.
Never loud.
I had admired him.
Good.
When I raised to Priya, she said:
“Pattern is evidence, not conclusion.”
Good.
Dominic’s counsel received.
They froze Victor’s access.
He did not run.
He called emergency board meeting.
Claimed Dominic was conducting witch hunt because secretary crisis.
There.
Interesting.
Victor accused:
Dominic emotionally compromised.
Diana had inappropriate relationship with Marcus.
Internal investigation manipulated.
Classic.
Good.
Board appointed outside forensic auditor.
Dominic agreed.
Important.
He did not shut it down.
Good.
I stayed on leave.
Then Seth Nolan was found.
Alive.
At his mother’s house in Maine.
He had left because someone threatened his family.
Who?
He showed text:
FIX THE LOGS OR YOUR MOTHER LOSES HER HOUSE FIRST.
V.R.
Could be forged initials.
Still.
Good.
Seth admitted:
Victor Rinaldi asked him months earlier to create “continuity credentials” for emergency access.
Not illegal on face.
Then pressured him to use Aaron Cole’s admin account to generate recovery tokens.
Why?
Victor said Dominic wanted audit trail separated.
Seth believed for two weeks.
Then realized tokens mapped to my account.
He objected.
Threats.
There.
Good.
Police opened.
Victor retained counsel.
No arrest yet.
Then one more thing.
Seth said:
“Victor kept saying Santoro would take care of external side.”
Marcus.
My stomach dropped.
No.
Did Marcus know?
We needed evidence.
Good.
A recovered email from Victor to unknown encrypted account:
M.S. WILL KEEP D.P. CLOSE IF NEEDED.
There.
Again initials.
Could mean Marcus.
Could mean something else.
Dominic called Priya, not me.
Requested permission to speak.
I said yes.
Video call.
First direct contact since apartment.
He looked tired.
No three-piece suit.
White shirt.
No tie.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
Good.
He said:
“I owe you another apology.”
I almost laughed.
“Growing collection.”
“Yes.”
Good.
“I let suspicion change how I treated you.”
“You said that.”
“I understand more now.”
“Explain.”
He did.
He had known Vitelli asked if I could be bribed.
Marcus told him.
Then leak began under my credentials.
Instead of protecting investigation from bias, Dominic became harsher with me because he felt personally betrayed before evidence.
There.
Good.
“I wanted you to prove me wrong without knowing I had accused you in my head.”
That was precise.
Ugly.
Good.
“That was cruel.”
“Yes.”
“And stupid.”
“Yes.”
Good.
I appreciated.
Then:
“Victor may be involved.”
“I know.”
“Marcus may be.”
“I know.”
“Do you trust Marcus?”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
Wrong question.
I looked.
He corrected.
“Do you believe he was honest with you?”
Better.
“Eventually.”
Good.
“Do you believe he is involved?”
“I don’t know.”
There.
Dominic nodded.
“Neither do I.”
Growth.
Good.
Then I asked:
“Do you want me back at work?”
His eyes changed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you are the best executive secretary I have ever had.”
There.
Not:
need.
Not:
replaceable.
Good.
“And?”
“Because I miss you.”
Silence.
There.
My pulse changed.
Dangerous.
“Dominic.”
“I know.”
“Do not mix this.”
“I’m trying not to.”
Good.
He looked away.
Then:
“You should not come back while investigation active.”
“Agreed.”
Good.
“So why did you say you want me back?”
“Because you asked.”
Fair.
Good.
I almost smiled.
Then:
“Your role will exist when this is over if you want it.”
I thought of shattered glass.
Seventy-hour weeks.
Park.
“No.”
Dominic went still.
There.
“I don’t want that role back.”
His face changed.
Not anger.
Loss.
Good.
“What do you want?”
That question.
I had not expected.
“I don’t know yet.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Good.
Then:
“Company owes you severance if you decide to leave.”
“I’ll discuss with Priya.”
“Yes.”
No negotiation personally.
Good.
We ended.
The next morning, board’s independent forensic team found the first direct transfer.
Victor Rinaldi had received $480,000 through a consulting company owned by his brother-in-law.
Source:
a Vitelli-linked logistics shell.
There.
Leak.
But Victor was not alone.
The payment authorization on Vitelli side was approved by Marcus Santoro’s private investment office.
There.
Marcus.
Not necessarily him personally.
But close.
My stomach turned.
The man who had told me Dominic was an idiot.
The man who had held my hand.
The man who said I was not replaceable.
Maybe he meant it.
Maybe he also meant to use me.
May you like
Both could be true.
And I was done confusing warmth with honesty just because coldness had hurt me first.
