Chapter 5 - I LEARNED WHO I WAS WITHOUT HIS CALENDAR

The first week unemployed, I reorganized my kitchen three times.

The second week, I nearly applied for six executive-assistant roles out of panic.

Priya stopped me.

Not legally.

Emotionally.

“You have severance.”

“I know.”

“You have savings.”

“I know.”

“You have health insurance continuation.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you applying to another seventy-hour job?”

I stared.

Because I knew how to be needed.

There.

Good.

I closed laptop.

“Fair.”

Priya smiled.

“I bill in six-minute increments. This advice is free. Appreciate it.”

Good.

I started smaller.

Sleep.

Actual meals.

Dinner with Julia twice in one week without canceling.

A dentist appointment I had rescheduled four times.

Ordinary.

Good.

Then I found an old notebook from before Caruso Group.

On first page:

things I wanted to do before thirty.

Learn Italian.

Run a half marathon.

Take a ceramics class.

Travel alone.

Write something longer than an email.

I laughed.

I was twenty-nine.

Time.

Good.

I signed up for ceramics.

I was terrible.

Excellent.

The instructor, Ben, asked what I did for work.

I almost said:

I manage Dominic Caruso.

Instead:

“I’m between jobs.”

No shame.

Good.

Meanwhile investigation continued.

Victor Rinaldi’s case expanded.

Forensic evidence showed:

he sold draft agreements to Vitelli-linked interests,

used recovery tokens to make leaks appear under my account,

directed Seth to alter logs,

arranged my apartment intrusion through a private investigator with criminal history,

and threatened Seth.

There.

He had chosen me because:

my access was broad,

Dominic trusted me,

and Marcus had revealed Vitelli viewed me as influential.

Good.

Victor believed suspicion would destabilize Dominic.

Correct.

He also believed Dominic would fire me quietly rather than involve police.

Almost.

There.

Good.

The black SUV outside restaurant belonged to investigator Victor hired.

The apartment intruder:

same man.

Arrested.

No dramatic mafia revenge.

Good.

Aaron Cole was cleared of intentional involvement.

His admin account compromised.

He returned to work after medical leave under new controls.

Seth entered witness protection? Too much. Better employment-protection and security; he cooperated.

Good.

Marcus.

He pleaded guilty to a narrower financial/conspiracy offense? Could be later.

At this stage cooperation.

He sent no messages.

Respect.

Good.

Dominic’s company board extended his step-back to ninety days.

Independent review found another issue:

employees routinely worked excessive hours around Dominic because he rewarded availability and punished delay informally.

Not illegal necessarily.

Cultural.

Good.

HR had turnover:

seven executive assistants in four years before me.

There.

I was “only one over six months.”

Marcus had said like compliment.

Actually warning.

Good.

Dominic read report.

I knew because Elena Park emailed me? No, no business now. Public? Not public. Perhaps Priya received employment settlement report with findings relevant to my grievance.

Yes.

The company offered settlement:

compensation for monitoring grievance and overtime disputes.

No gag about unlawful conduct.

Mutual non-disparagement limited.

Priya negotiated.

I accepted.

Clean money from legitimate corporate account per documentation.

Good.

Not hush.

Then I received handwritten letter.

No return name needed.

Dominic.

I almost did not open.

There was no instruction not to contact beyond workplace? I said not now. He had respected six weeks.

I opened.

Diana,

I am writing once.

Good.

I learned from the review that six people before you left my office because I made constant availability a condition without saying it aloud.

There.

I knew turnover.

I told myself they were not capable.

He continued.

You were capable enough to adapt, so I mistook endurance for consent.

There.

My chest tightened.

Then:

I have reduced the executive role to two positions with defined hours and separate responsibilities.

There.

Good.

Structural change.

Not:

I’ll be nicer to next woman.

Better.

The security audio program has been terminated except explicit emergency opt-in for high-risk roles.

Good.

He continued:

None of this is a reason for you to come back.

Good.

Then:

I miss you.

I am not asking you to do anything with that information.

There.

Dominic.

I read three times.

Then placed in drawer.

No answer.

Not yet.

Good.

I interviewed for a role at a university-affiliated policy center.

Operations director.

Forty-five hours expected.

Some evening events.

No mafia.

Salary lower.

I felt relief.

Interview panel asked:

“Why did you leave Caruso Group?”

I could not say:

my boss shattered crystal and listened to me cry.

I said:

“The role became too dependent on constant availability, and I’m looking for an organization with more sustainable operating systems.”

True.

Good.

They asked:

“What did you learn?”

I thought.

“That being indispensable can be a management failure.”

There.

The panel chair smiled.

Good.

I got second interview.

Then third.

Offer.

I accepted.

Good.

My first day, my manager said:

“Log off by six unless something is actually on fire.”

I laughed.

He looked confused.

Good.

At five fifty-seven, I closed laptop.

No one died.

Excellent.

Then Dominic’s criminal exposure.

Victor’s evidence included messages about Dominic’s own non-legitimate operations.

Of course.

He was a mafia boss.

The corporate leak case opened doors.

Federal investigators subpoenaed:

cash businesses,

loan records,

payments.

Dominic could fight.

His attorneys did some.

Then board pressure.

Legitimate company wanted separation from criminal activity.

Dominic faced choice.

Good.

I learned through news.

CARUSO HOLDINGS FOUNDER STEPS DOWN AMID FEDERAL REVIEW.

He resigned as CEO.

There.

Not because me.

Because consequences.

Good.

He retained ownership but placed voting authority with independent trust during investigation.

Good.

I felt strange.

This man had once controlled every minute of my day.

Now he had no office.

Good.

Julia asked:

“Do you feel sorry for him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you think he deserves consequences?”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Adults are inconvenient.

Then Dominic was indicted months later.

Charges:

illegal gambling,

money laundering,

extortionate lending,

obstruction tied to old operations.

Not leak conspiracy.

Victor separate.

Good.

Dominic surrendered.

No raid.

Pleaded not guilty initially pending review.

Then entered negotiations.

I watched from television.

He looked unchanged.

Suit.

Gray eyes.

No expression.

But I knew enough to see fear in way his left hand closed.

There.

I turned TV off.

My life continued.

Work.

Ceramics.

Half-marathon training, badly.

I ran three miles and thought death preferable.

Good.

Then Marcus’s sentencing.

He had cooperated extensively.

He accepted responsibility for paying Victor for confidential information and delaying disclosure.

Received probation plus substantial fine? Serious but less. Maybe short home confinement. Let's say twelve months home confinement and financial penalties, business restrictions. Fine.

He sent one note through Priya asking permission to apologize.

I agreed to written.

Letter:

I told myself I was protecting you when I withheld what I knew about the leak because I wanted to investigate quietly.

There.

Familiar word.

Protection.

Everyone loved it.

Then:

The truth is I was protecting myself and using concern for you to make that sound better.

There.

Good.

I accepted apology.

No friendship.

Good.

I wrote:

THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT ACCURATELY.

I WISH YOU WELL.

Done.

Good.

Then Dominic pleaded guilty.

I read transcript online.

The judge asked whether he used threats to collect debts.

“Yes.”

Whether he laundered proceeds through legitimate businesses.

“Yes.”

Whether he obstructed investigations in prior years.

“Yes.”

There.

No romantic laundering.

Good.

Then judge asked:

“Did Ms. Diana Price participate in any of these activities?”

My full name now? User only Diana no surname. Let's introduce Diana Price? Hmm not established. Better avoid surname. Judge can say "your former secretary Diana..." But shouldn't reveal. Let's keep "Ms. Diana [surname omitted]" awkward. Better we can name Diana Bennett now? Too late. We can say "your former executive secretary." Fine.

Dominic answered:

“No.”

Good.

“Did she knowingly transmit confidential information to Vitelli interests?”

“No.”

There.

Public clearing.

That mattered.

Then:

“Did you initially suspect she had?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

Dominic paused.

“I treated her as guilty before I had evidence.”

There.

Not criminal count.

Still on record.

Good.

I closed laptop.

No tears.

Not yet.

Then he was sentenced to thirty months.

Financial penalties.

Forfeiture.

Supervised release.

Restrictions.

Good.

The man who told me there were a hundred women waiting to replace me was going somewhere none of them could follow.

I did not visit.

I did not write.

Not for first year.

Good.

Instead, I got promoted.

Not because of Dominic.

At policy center, I redesigned executive operations so no one employee held all institutional knowledge.

Cross-training.

Documented workflows.

Real vacations.

My boss joked:

“You seem personally offended by single points of failure.”

“I am.”

Good.

Then one day, a new assistant apologized for leaving at five because her mother had an appointment.

I said:

“You don’t need to apologize for using your life.”

There.

The sentence hit me after she left.

I went to bathroom and cried.

Not because sad.

Because eighteen months earlier, I would have been answering emails at midnight and calling it loyalty.

Now I knew loyalty that required disappearing from your own life was just another form of fear.

Good.

That night, I finally took Dominic’s letter from drawer.

I read:

I miss you.

I am not asking you to do anything with that information.

A year had passed.

He was in prison.

No office.

No control over me.

For first time, I wondered what remained between us when usefulness was gone.

I did not have answer.

May you like

That was okay.

Good.
