Chapter 10 - THE BEST MISTAKE

Three days later, Lorenzo stood in front of his father's empty grave.
The photograph changed everything.
Daniel explained everything.
Before entering the auditorium, Lorenzo stopped.
"Kira."
She turned.
"What?"
"If you ever regret meeting me..."
"I won't."
"You don't know that."
"I do."
She stepped closer.
"The mistake wasn't hugging you."
"What was it?"
"Thinking you were someone else."
He smiled.
"And now?"
"Now I know exactly who you are."
She kissed him.
And this time, there was nothing accidental about it.
He had been born into the Moretti bloodline but rejected the Crown.
When the organization demanded an heir, he used Ethan as a decoy.
He allowed the world to believe Ethan carried the family legacy.
That way, anyone hunting the heir would watch the wrong person.
Kira looked at her father.
"You made my brother a target."
"I know."
"You should have told us."
"I wanted to."
"When?"
"When it was safe."
Kira shook her head.
"Safe never came."
Daniel nodded.
"You're right."
Lorenzo stepped between them.
"The Crown is collapsing."
Daniel looked at him.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because the person at the top hasn't been identified."
Agent Miller opened the folder.
"We have one name."
She placed a photograph on the table.
Lorenzo stared.
Kira looked over his shoulder.
The man in the photograph was someone she had seen before.
At the university.
At the hotel.
At the cemetery.
Someone who had always been nearby.
Walter Pruitt.
But the file listed his real name.
Gabriel Moretti.
Lorenzo's uncle.
The man everyone believed had died before Lorenzo was born.
Kira whispered, "He's alive."
Daniel nodded.
"And he's coming for you."
Three months later, the Crown's final operation was exposed.
Gabriel was arrested after attempting to flee the country.
Adrian testified.
Marcus disappeared.
Daniel entered witness protection.
Isabella returned to Chicago.
Ethan finished his graduate program.
And Kira opened a second flower shop.
On the anniversary of Ethan's graduation, she returned to the university.
Lorenzo was waiting outside.
She smiled.
"You came."
"Of course."
"You remember this place."
"I remember you."
She laughed.
"I was so embarrassed."
"I wasn't."
"You weren't normal."
"I never claimed to be."
She stepped closer.
"Do you regret it?"
"The hug?"
"The mistake."
He shook his head.
"Never."
He took her hand.
"Best mistake I ever made."
Kira smiled.
"Then I'm glad I made it."
They walked toward the auditorium together.
Behind them, Chicago's skyline glittered.
The city still knew Lorenzo Moretti as a dangerous man.
But Kira knew the truth.
He was the man who had once forgotten to watch the exits because a frightened young woman had hugged him without fear.
And sometimes, the biggest changes in a life did not begin with a gunshot or a business deal.
Sometimes they began with a mistake.
One wrong turn.
One wrong person.
One unexpected embrace.
And one man discovering that the woman who had mistaken him for her brother was the first person in years who had made him feel like he had finally come home.
Lorenzo took it to Agent Miller.
She studied it for several seconds.
"That camera timestamp is genuine."
"Then someone recreated the image."
"Maybe."
Kira looked at the photograph.
The woman resembled Lorenzo.
The same dark eyes.
The same severe mouth.
"Who took it?"
"We don't know."
Ethan pointed at the corner.
"Look."
A tiny reflection appeared in the glass behind the woman.
A man.
Part of his face visible.
Kira enlarged it.
Her stomach dropped.
She knew him.
"That's my father."
Lorenzo stared.
Daniel was standing behind his own mother.
Which meant he had been part of the Moretti family long before Kira was born.
Kira looked at him.
"He was never just a witness."
"No," Lorenzo said.
"He was the heir."
Silence.
Then Agent Miller shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense."
Kira turned.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel Lawson died eleven years ago."
Kira's heart stopped.
"But he's alive."
"Exactly."
The truth was worse than any of them had imagined.
Daniel had used the name Lawson.
He had lived among them.
He had hidden his connection to the Morettis.
And he had raised Kira and Ethan inside a lie designed to keep the Crown from finding them.
But someone else had known.
The black card.
The photograph.
The messages.
Kira looked at Lorenzo.
"What happens now?"
He took her hand.
"We stop running."
"Are you sure?"
"No."
She smiled.
"Good."
He looked at her.
"You still aren't afraid."
"I am."
"Then why stay?"
"Because I already made one mistake."
He smiled.
"The hug."
"The hug."
He leaned closer.
"And?"
Kira kissed him.
For a moment, the world outside disappeared.
When they separated, Ethan cleared his throat.
"Seriously?"
Kira laughed.
"Sorry."
"You're impossible."
Lorenzo smiled.
"So is your sister."
Ethan shook his head.
"She's your problem now."
Lorenzo looked at Kira.
"I don't think she's a problem."
Outside, the snow began falling again.
The investigation continued for months.
The Crown's remaining members were arrested.
Adrian eventually surfaced and surrendered.
Daniel returned voluntarily.
He told Kira the truth.
He had been the heir, but he had rejected the Crown.
He had hidden his identity because he believed the organization would destroy anyone connected to him.
Isabella forgave him slowly.
Kira did too.
Not because the past didn't matter.
Because she refused to let it own the future.
A year after the graduation ceremony, Kira stood in the same university hall.
This time, she was not late.
Ethan walked across the stage to receive his master's degree.
Lorenzo sat beside her.
When Ethan's name was called, Kira stood.
She applauded until her hands hurt.
Lorenzo leaned close.
"Should I be worried?"
"About what?"
"You might hug the wrong man again."
She smiled.
"I know exactly who I'm hugging now."
She turned toward him.
And when she wrapped her arms around Lorenzo, he held her as though he had been waiting his entire life for that embrace.
The city still knew his name.
Some people still feared him.
But Kira knew something they didn't.
The most dangerous man in Chicago had once been a lonely young man who believed love was weakness.
Then a woman who thought he was her brother had run across a crowded campus and hugged him without fear.
It was a mistake.
A ridiculous, embarrassing, impossible mistake.
And it had changed everything.
Snow covered the cemetery.
The police had searched it twice.
They found no body.
Only an old metal ring buried beneath the stone.
Kira stood beside him.
"Do you believe he's alive?"
Lorenzo stared at the grave.
"I believe someone wants me to believe he is."
"What's the difference?"
"One is hope."
He looked at her.
"The other is manipulation."
Behind them, Ethan and Isabella waited beside the car.
Kira slipped her hand into Lorenzo's.
He looked down.
"You know," she said, "this all started because I hugged the wrong man."
He smiled.
"Best mistake you ever made."
She laughed.
"You really like saying that."
"I mean it."
The federal investigation continued.
Walter's network collapsed.
Several officials were arrested.
The Crown disappeared from Chicago almost overnight.
Adrian Moretti was taken into federal custody.
Kira's father entered witness protection.
Isabella began rebuilding her life.
And Ethan received three job offers.
He accepted none of them immediately.
For the first time, he wanted to choose his future without feeling responsible for everyone else.
Kira returned to work.
The flower shop was small, warm, and always smelled like roses.
One afternoon, Lorenzo walked in.
Every customer went silent.
Kira looked up.
"You don't belong here."
He raised an eyebrow.
"Why?"
"You frighten the tulips."
"I'll apologize."
He placed a small box on the counter.
Kira opened it.
Inside was a silver bracelet.
A tiny charm hung from it.
A graduation cap.
She smiled.
"For me?"
"For the woman who missed her brother's graduation because she was busy embarrassing herself."
"I did not miss it."
"You arrived late."
"I arrived dramatically."
He laughed.
She looked at him.
"Why are you really here?"
His expression became serious.
"I have spent my entire life believing love was a weakness."
Kira's smile faded.
"Then?"
"Then you hugged me."
She waited.
"And?"
"And I realized I was wrong."
He reached across the counter.
"I don't want you to be afraid of me."
"I've never been afraid of you."
"You were."
"At first."
"And now?"
Kira smiled.
"Now I'm mostly afraid you'll ruin my flower arrangements."
He laughed.
Then he took her hand.
"I want to take you to dinner."
"Is that an invitation or an order?"
"An invitation."
"Then yes."
Six months later, the city had changed.
So had Lorenzo.
He sold several businesses connected to the old organization.
He kept the legitimate shipping company.
He started a foundation in his mother's name.
And he stopped carrying a weapon into every room.
Not because he had become harmless.
Because he had finally found something worth protecting without destroying everything around it.
Kira and Lorenzo stood outside the university one evening.
Ethan had returned for a graduate program.
The same auditorium where they first met was hosting a scholarship ceremony.
Kira looked at Lorenzo.
"Do you remember what you said to me?"
"Which part?"
"Best mistake you ever made."
He smiled.
"I remember."
She leaned closer.
"I think you were right."
He kissed her forehead.
Then Ethan ran toward them.
"Kira!"
She turned.
"What?"
He held up a diploma.
"I got the fellowship."
She screamed.
Lorenzo laughed.
Ethan hugged Kira.
She hugged him back.
Then she turned and accidentally bumped into Lorenzo.
He caught her.
For one second, the three of them stood together.
A family built from mistakes, secrets, loss, and impossible choices.
Then Kira noticed something on the university steps.
A silver-haired man.
Watching them.
Her smile disappeared.
"Lorenzo."
He turned.
The man was gone.
On the ground was a black card.
The crown symbol.
Kira picked it up.
There was writing on the back.
YOU SAVED THE WRONG FAMILY.
Lorenzo read it.
His expression became cold.
But Kira did not step away.
She took his hand.
"What now?"
He looked at her.
"Now we find out the truth."
"Together?"
"Together."
She smiled.
"Good."
Because six months earlier, she had run across a crowded campus believing she was hugging her brother.
She had been wrong.
That mistake had introduced her to the most dangerous man in Chicago.
It had exposed a conspiracy that had survived for eleven years.
It had brought her mother home.
It had revealed the truth about her family.
And somehow, in the middle of all that danger, it had given her something she never expected.
A man who had once been feared by an entire city now looked at her as though she were the only person in the room.
Lorenzo squeezed her hand.
"Come on."
"Where?"
"Home."
May you like
Kira smiled.
And this time, she knew exactly who she was walking toward.
