Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME

The man standing beside Isabella looked nothing like the aging Walter Pruitt they had known.

Kira pressed herself against the steel column while the gunfire continued.

Kira took one slow breath. Whatever happened next, she would not let fear erase the person she had become.

The voice on the speaker repeated the same words.

After the escape, Kira cleaned the blood from Lorenzo's shoulder.

Kira looked at the empty tracks. The train station had been abandoned for years, yet somehow it had become the center of their family's history. She wondered how many secrets could survive inside a place after everyone involved was gone. Then she realized secrets did not disappear. They waited for someone brave enough to ask the right question.

Lorenzo looked toward the horizon. He had spent years preparing for enemies who carried guns, money, and influence. He had never prepared for someone to challenge him with kindness. Kira had done that from the beginning. Somehow, that frightened him more than any rival ever had.

He winced.

"Does it hurt?"

"Yes."

"Good."

He laughed.

"You've become mean."

"I learned from you."

She wrapped the bandage tighter.

He looked at her.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For staying."

Kira met his eyes.

"I don't think I know how to leave anymore."

Neither of them spoke after that.

The silence said enough.

"The war was never about the ledger."

Lorenzo searched the ceiling.

"Then what?"

"The heir."

Kira looked at Ethan.

Ethan shook his head.

"Why me?"

"Because your blood is valuable."

"To whom?"

"To the person who built the Crown."

The speaker went silent.

Kira turned to Lorenzo.

"Your father."

He nodded.

They left the station before dawn.

At a safe house, Isabella finally told them everything.

"Adrian was never my enemy."

Kira stared.

"Then why did he threaten us?"

"Because he wanted you to run."

"From whom?"

"The Crown."

She looked at Lorenzo.

"Your father created it to protect the family. When he realized what it became, he tried to destroy it."

"Who stopped him?"

"Your uncle."

Lorenzo frowned.

"I didn't know I had an uncle."

"Neither did anyone."

Isabella looked at Ethan.

"Your father was his son."

The room went silent.

Kira understood.

Ethan wasn't merely connected to the Morettis.

He was connected to the person who had built the Crown.

That made him the heir.

But Ethan shook his head.

"I don't want it."

Isabella reached for his hand.

"You don't get to choose what people believe."

Kira answered.

"Maybe not."

She looked at Ethan.

"But we choose what we do with it."

Lorenzo smiled.

"That's why I trust you."

She had never been this close to violence.

Lorenzo had.

He moved through it with terrifying precision.

He never fired blindly.

Every movement had a purpose.

When the shooting stopped, he found Kira immediately.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

He touched her cheek.

"You're bleeding."

"It's glass."

He wiped the tiny cut with his thumb.

Kira looked at him.

For a second, neither spoke.

Then Ethan shouted.

"Mom!"

They ran.

Isabella was conscious.

She had a piece of broken metal in her shoulder, but she was alive.

The fake Walter had disappeared.

Adrian had disappeared.

And the ledger was gone.

Kira looked around.

"Where is my father?"

Nobody answered.

She felt panic rising.

Then a message arrived.

HE'S WITH ME.

Kira showed Lorenzo.

His jaw tightened.

"Adrian."

Another message.

BRING THE LEDGER.

Kira looked at Ethan.

"Do we have it?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"Then what do we bring?"

"Nothing."

Lorenzo thought for a moment.

"That's the point."

Kira frowned.

"He thinks we still have it."

"Exactly."

They created a fake ledger.

Kira wrote numbers.

Ethan copied signatures.

Lorenzo supplied names that had already appeared in public records.

It looked convincing.

Then they went to the train station.

The exchange was terrifying.

Kira saw her father tied to the chair.

She wanted to run to him.

Lorenzo stopped her.

"Wait."

Adrian stepped into the light.

"You're early."

"You wanted the ledger."

"We brought it."

Kira held up the case.

Adrian smiled.

"Give it to me."

She walked forward.

Then Ethan shouted.

"Don't."

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed toward the ceiling.

A red light blinked.

"Camera."

Lorenzo smiled.

"You've been recording this."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Of course."

"You just admitted kidnapping."

"You think that matters?"

"To a jury?"

Adrian laughed.

Then the lights exploded.

The station plunged into darkness.

Kira heard footsteps.

Someone grabbed her.

She screamed.

A hand covered her mouth.

Then Lorenzo's voice cut through the darkness.

"Let her go."

The grip vanished.

Kira fell into his arms.

He held her tightly.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded.

Adrian was gone.

But Ethan had found something.

A hidden microphone.

He held it up.

"This wasn't Adrian's."

Lorenzo stared.

"Then whose?"

A familiar voice came from the speaker.

Walter Pruitt.

Or Marcus.

Or whoever he really was.

"You finally understand."

Lorenzo's face hardened.

"What?"

"The war was never about the ledger."

Kira looked at him.

"What was it about?"

The voice answered.

"You."

Yet the voice was the same.

The posture was the same.

The eyes were the same.

Kira felt sick.

Lorenzo stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"The question is who have you been calling Walter?"

Isabella looked at Kira.

"I'm sorry."

Kira moved toward her.

"Mom."

"I wanted to tell you."

"Then tell me now."

Isabella took a breath.

"The man you knew as Walter was actually his son."

Lorenzo's face hardened.

"Then where is the real Walter?"

The man answered.

"Dead."

"How long?"

"Eleven years."

Kira felt the pieces align.

The fake Walter had taken over after the real Walter died.

He had manipulated the family.

He had made himself indispensable.

And he had spent eleven years searching for the ledger.

"Why?" Kira asked.

The man looked at her.

"Because your mother stole it."

"What is in it?"

"Names."

"Whose?"

"Judges. Police officers. politicians. businessmen. Anyone who paid the Crown."

Lorenzo stared.

"You want the ledger because it protects you."

"No."

The man smiled.

"I want it because it destroys everyone."

A gunshot sounded.

The man dropped.

Lorenzo pulled Kira behind a steel column.

Chaos erupted.

Men fired from the upper walkway.

Isabella crawled toward cover.

Ethan dragged her.

Lorenzo returned fire.

The warehouse filled with smoke.

Kira found a fire extinguisher and threw it toward a stack of crates.

The impact distracted one shooter.

Lorenzo took him down.

Then silence.

The fake Walter was gone.

So was the ledger.

Kira rushed to Isabella.

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine."

"Where is the box?"

Isabella stared at the floor.

"I gave it to Ethan."

Kira turned.

Ethan was missing.

Her heart stopped.

"Ethan?"

No answer.

Lorenzo searched the warehouse.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

Adrian.

"You have an hour."

Lorenzo's voice became deadly.

"Where is my brother?"

"Safe."

"And Ethan?"

"Also safe."

Kira grabbed the phone.

"Put my brother on."

A pause.

Then Ethan's voice.

"Kira, don't give them anything."

The line went dead.

Kira looked at Lorenzo.

"We have to get him."

"We will."

"What if they hurt him?"

"They won't."

"How do you know?"

"Because they need the ledger."

Kira shook her head.

"That doesn't make me feel better."

Lorenzo stepped closer.

"I'll bring him back."

She looked at him.

"You promise?"

He hesitated.

"I don't make promises I can't keep."

"Then make this one."

His eyes softened.

"I promise."

They followed the location to an abandoned train station.

Adrian waited there.

Ethan sat tied to a chair.

The ledger lay on a table.

Kira started forward.

Adrian raised a gun.

"Stop."

Lorenzo moved beside her.

"Let him go."

"Give me the ledger."

Lorenzo looked at Kira.

She understood.

She opened the box.

But before she could hand it over, Ethan laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

"You idiots."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"The ledger isn't in the box."

Adrian's face changed.

Ethan looked at Kira.

"Mom switched it."

Kira understood.

The real ledger had never been in the metal box.

It had been hidden in the one place nobody would search.

The graduation gift bag.

Her mother's old photograph.

The same bag Kira had carried into the auditorium.

She whispered, "Oh my God."

Adrian realized it too.

"Where is it?"

Kira smiled despite her fear.

"You'll never know."

Adrian raised the gun.

Lorenzo moved.

A shot rang out.

Then another.

Ethan's chair fell backward.

Kira screamed.

Lorenzo grabbed her.

When the smoke cleared, Adrian was gone.

Ethan was alive.

But a red stain spread across Lorenzo's shoulder.

Kira touched him.

"You're bleeding."

"It's nothing."

"It's not nothing."

He smiled faintly.

"You hugged me harder than this."

She almost laughed.

Then Ethan spoke.

"The ledger isn't the only thing Mom hid."

Kira turned.

"What else?"

Ethan looked at Isabella.

"A second key."

Isabella's face went pale.

"Where?"

Ethan reached into his pocket.

"With Dad."

Everyone looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Kira's father stood there.

And he was holding a gun.
