Chapter 8 - THE LAST KEY

Kira had spent her childhood imagining what it would feel like to meet her father.
The smoke cleared slowly.
For the first time, Kira understood that the truth did not have to destroy a family. Sometimes it could give people the freedom to build one differently.
She squeezed Lorenzo's hand. He squeezed back. It was a small gesture, almost invisible, but it reminded her that she was no longer facing the past alone. Whatever waited behind the next door, they would meet it together.
Kira took one final breath. Then she stepped forward, ready to hear whatever truth came next.
She was done being afraid of names and shadows.
Kira watched Ethan read the old document.
Ethan sat alone for several minutes.
Lorenzo watched Ethan carefully. The young man was frightened, but he was still standing. That mattered. Courage wasn't the absence of fear. It was refusing to let fear make the decision. Kira had taught him that without realizing it. She had taught Lorenzo the same thing.
The plan was dangerous, but Kira understood that doing nothing was dangerous too. The Crown had survived because ordinary people kept looking away. She refused to look away. She refused to let another generation inherit a war they had never chosen. If the family story had to end, she wanted it to end with them.
Kira found him staring at his hands.
"I keep wondering if there's something inside me that belongs to them."
She sat beside him.
"There isn't."
"You don't know that."
"I know you."
He looked at her.
"You'd still call me your brother?"
"Even if every DNA test in the world said otherwise."
He smiled.
"Then I guess I'm lucky."
"You are."
She leaned against his shoulder.
"And so am I."
His hands shook.
"I don't want to be part of this."
"You aren't," Kira said.
"But they think I am."
"Then let them think."
Lorenzo nodded.
"Fear can be used against people."
Ethan looked at him.
"What do you suggest?"
"We give them what they expect."
Kira understood.
"A fake heir."
"Exactly."
They built the plan carefully.
Ethan would appear to accept the Crown.
Meanwhile, federal investigators would track the people who approached him.
It was dangerous.
But it was the only way to bring the network into the open.
Kira hated the idea.
Lorenzo knew.
"You don't have to do this."
She looked at him.
"Neither do you."
"I've been doing this my entire life."
"That's not a reason."
He smiled.
"No."
"It's a habit."
"Maybe."
Kira took his hand.
"You can have another habit."
"What?"
"Coming home."
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then nodded.
"I like that one."
That evening, Ethan received a message.
THE HEIR IS INVITED.
An address followed.
The Moretti family cemetery.
Kira stared at it.
"That's where your father was buried."
"Yes."
Lorenzo's face hardened.
"We're going."
Lorenzo and Adrian stood several feet apart.
Kira could hear her own heartbeat.
Adrian lowered his weapon.
"You don't understand what you're carrying."
Kira stared.
"The key?"
"The key is nothing."
"Then why did you come?"
"Because the vault contains the only proof that your father is still alive."
Lorenzo's expression changed.
"My father?"
Adrian nodded.
"He has been alive for eleven years."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
Kira stepped closer.
"Then who has him?"
Adrian looked at her.
"The Crown."
"Who leads it?"
He smiled.
"You've met him."
Kira thought of Marcus.
Then Walter.
Then Daniel.
Too many names.
Too many lies.
"Which one?"
Adrian shook his head.
"None of them."
The building shook.
An explosion sounded outside.
Everyone ducked.
The vault door began closing.
Lorenzo grabbed Kira.
"Move!"
They ran.
Adrian stayed behind.
"Go!"
Lorenzo looked back.
"Why?"
"Because I'm tired of being the villain in a story written by our father."
The door slammed.
Kira and Lorenzo escaped through the service tunnel.
Outside, snow covered the streets.
Ethan was waiting with Isabella.
Kira ran to them.
"Where's Dad?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
She felt tears burn.
"We'll find him."
Lorenzo looked at the burning building.
"Adrian sacrificed himself."
Kira shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted us to find something."
She looked at the key.
"What's behind the vault?"
Lorenzo answered.
"Another room."
They returned to the Moretti estate after the fire was extinguished.
The hidden room was damaged, but one wall remained intact.
Behind it was a small chamber.
Inside stood a desk.
On the desk was a tape recorder.
Lorenzo pressed play.
His father's voice filled the room.
"If you are hearing this, Lorenzo, then I failed."
Lorenzo froze.
His father continued.
"The Crown was never an outside organization."
Kira looked at him.
"It began inside this family."
The recording continued.
"I created it."
Silence.
Lorenzo staggered back.
"No."
His father's voice remained calm.
"I believed fear was the only language powerful men understood. I built an organization to protect our interests. It grew beyond my control."
Kira covered her mouth.
"And when I tried to destroy it, the people closest to me turned against me."
The tape clicked.
Then another voice appeared.
Isabella.
"You promised you would stop."
Lorenzo looked at Kira.
His mother.
His father.
All of them had known.
The recording ended.
A final message appeared on the wall.
THE CROWN BELONGS TO THE HEIR.
Lorenzo stared.
"Who is the heir?"
Ethan whispered.
"Maybe me."
Everyone turned.
He looked terrified.
She had imagined anger.
She had imagined questions.
She had never imagined seeing him point a gun at Lorenzo.
"Put it down," Kira said.
Her father's hand trembled.
"I can't."
Lorenzo stepped in front of her.
"Why?"
Her father looked at him.
"Because you don't know what the key opens."
"Then tell me."
"It opens the Crown's vault."
Silence.
Adrian appeared behind him.
Kira understood.
Her father had been working with Adrian.
"No," she whispered.
Her father looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
"You knew where Mom was."
"Yes."
"You let us believe she was dead."
"I had to."
"Why?"
"Because if they knew you existed, they would have killed you."
Kira's eyes filled.
"You didn't protect us."
He lowered his head.
"I know."
Adrian stepped forward.
"The vault contains everything."
Lorenzo raised his weapon.
"You're not getting it."
Adrian smiled.
"You don't have a choice."
He pressed a button.
The train station doors locked.
Smoke began filling the room.
Kira coughed.
Lorenzo grabbed her hand.
"Stay with me."
They moved toward a side exit.
Her father blocked them.
Then Isabella shouted.
"Enough!"
Everyone stopped.
She held the real ledger.
Adrian stared.
"You had it."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Isabella smiled.
"Somewhere you never looked."
She dropped it into a metal barrel.
Flames rose.
Adrian lunged.
Lorenzo tackled him.
The two brothers fought.
Kira pulled her mother away.
Ethan grabbed the emergency lever.
The doors opened.
Cold air rushed inside.
Lorenzo emerged with Adrian.
His brother was bleeding.
Adrian laughed.
"You think this ends here?"
Lorenzo stared.
"No."
Then police sirens approached.
Kira's heart stopped.
"Did you call them?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"I sent copies of the ledger to three federal investigators."
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"You wouldn't."
"I did."
Walter's remaining men scattered.
The station became a storm of shouting officers and flashing lights.
But Kira noticed something.
Her father was gone.
So was the second key.
Hours later, at Lorenzo's home, Kira sat beside the fireplace with her mother.
"Why did you burn the ledger?"
Isabella looked at her.
"Because no list is worth destroying innocent lives."
"But evidence could have exposed them."
"I made copies."
Kira smiled.
"You always were smarter than everyone."
Isabella laughed softly.
"Not everyone."
She glanced toward Lorenzo.
He stood near the window with his injured shoulder wrapped.
Kira walked to him.
"How bad?"
"Not bad."
"You're a terrible liar."
"So I've been told."
She looked outside.
Snow fell over Chicago.
"You saved Ethan."
"I would do it again."
"Why?"
He looked at her.
"Because he's your brother."
Kira's heart skipped.
"And me?"
His expression softened.
"You stopped me in the middle of my life and hugged me like I was someone worth celebrating."
She smiled.
"I thought you were Ethan."
"I know."
He took her hand.
"Maybe I needed the mistake."
Kira looked down.
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
Lorenzo pulled her down.
Glass exploded across the room.
His security team rushed in.
Isabella screamed.
Ethan ducked behind the sofa.
Lorenzo looked toward the street.
A black car sped away.
On the floor lay another black card.
The crown.
But this time there was no message.
Only a photograph.
Kira picked it up.
It showed her father standing beside Adrian.
And beside them stood a third man.
Her brother Ethan.
Except the photograph had been taken when Ethan was six.
Kira's hands shook.
"That's impossible."
Lorenzo stared.
"Who is the man?"
Isabella went white.
"My God."
"What?"
She whispered one sentence.
"That's your uncle."
Kira frowned.
"We don't have an uncle."
Isabella shook her head.
May you like
"Not anymore."
Then she collapsed.
