Chapter 7 - The Wrong Brother Had the Key.

Dominic wanted to believe the message.
Evelyn could see it.
That made it dangerous.
TELL DOMINIC HIS BROTHER SAYS HELLO.
Hope could compromise judgment as efficiently as fear.
She said:
“That proves nothing.”
Dominic looked at her.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Federal agent Hill logged the response.
Aaron analyzed transmission metadata.
Jonah watched from behind glass.
No direct access.
Good.
The 04 response came through a relay chain spanning Toronto, Reykjavik, and Newark.
Too obvious.
Designed to waste time.
Then Evelyn noticed punctuation.
No period after HELLO.
Mercer’s archive messages always ended full statements with periods.
Jonah’s texts did not.
Interesting.
She pointed.
“Could be Jonah.”
Hill looked through the glass.
Jonah raised both hands.
“Rude.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You knew 04 gets notified.”
“Yes.”
“You knew what language the response layer uses.”
“Partly.”
“You could fake this.”
“Not from inside your federal aquarium.”
Hill said:
“He has no device.”
True.
Not proof of innocence.
Dominic asked:
“What would Daniel say?”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn shrugged.
“I don’t know him.”
“Exactly.”
He looked at the message.
“My brother would not say hello.”
“How would he speak?”
Dominic’s face changed.
“Daniel hated dramatic openings.”
Interesting.
“He would ask a question.”
“What question?”
Dominic thought.
Then:
“Something only I knew.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Then challenge back.”
Hill allowed it.
Dominic dictated:
WHAT DID YOU BREAK THE NIGHT BEFORE YOU LEFT?
Evelyn looked at him.
He explained:
“My father’s watch.”
“Why?”
“We fought. Daniel threw it.”
“Then?”
“He repaired it badly and blamed me.”
Almost normal.
Painfully normal.
The response came two minutes later.
NOT THE WATCH.
Dominic stopped.
Then:
THE BLUE MUSIC BOX.
His face emptied.
Evelyn knew.
“Correct?”
Dominic whispered:
“Yes.”
No one else knew?
Maybe Isabella.
“Who knew?”
“Daniel. me. our nanny.”
“Alive?”
“No.”
“Your mother?”
“No.”
Good authentication.
Maybe.
Another message:
YOU LIED FOR ME.
YOU WERE ELEVEN.
Dominic sat.
The crime boss became briefly a younger brother.
Evelyn looked away.
Private.
Then:
I NEED CARTER.
NOT YOU.
Dominic’s face hardened again.
“No.”
Evelyn said:
“Ask.”
He looked at her.
“I think no.”
“Better.”
She read.
WHY CARTER?
Response:
MERCER IS DYING.
Evelyn’s chest tightened.
WHERE?
No answer.
Then:
THE ARCHIVE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED.
04 IS NOT MINE ANYMORE.
Everyone stopped.
If Daniel was messaging through 04 but said 04 was not his, then he had temporary access.
Or was warning them someone else controlled it.
Dominic typed himself now, with Hill approving each line.
WHO HAS IT?
Response:
ASK YOUR MOTHER WHO SHE PAID IN 2006.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Another family secret.
Of course.
He called Isabella.
This time no video.
Speaker.
“Mother.”
“What happened?”
“Who did you pay in 2006?”
Silence.
Evelyn looked at Dominic.
There.
“Dominic.”
“Answer.”
“Why?”
“Daniel asked.”
Isabella stopped breathing audibly.
“He is alive?”
“Answer.”
Evelyn did not correct the command.
Some moments allowed urgency.
Isabella whispered:
“Victor Sloan.”
Silence.
Dominic looked at everyone.
“What did you pay him for?”
“To move Daniel.”
The room changed.
Sloan had helped fake Daniel’s death.
“Victor was involved.”
“Yes.”
“Then he always knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why pretend to discover Black Harbor later?”
“I do not know.”
Evelyn did.
“Because knowing Daniel was alive and knowing Daniel held the archive were different.”
Exactly.
Isabella continued.
“Victor was a junior logistics officer then. He arranged transport, documents, the vehicle swap.”
“Why him?”
“Your father trusted him.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand.”
“Where from?”
“Family emergency account.”
“Recorded?”
“Yes.”
Aaron was already searching historical data.
Found it.
Payment to Sloan Risk Logistics.
2006.
Authorization:
I.M.
Isabella.
Then a second payment three days later.
Same amount.
Authorization:
A.M.
Antonio Moretti.
Dominic frowned.
“Father paid him too.”
Isabella’s voice changed.
“I did not know.”
There.
Why?
Double payment.
One from Isabella to save Daniel.
One from Antonio.
For what?
Evelyn looked at the date.
The second payment came after Daniel’s staged funeral.
Maybe Antonio knew.
Maybe he paid Sloan to find him.
Or silence him.
Dominic said:
“Mother, did Father know Daniel survived?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then why pay Sloan?”
“I don’t know.”
The response screen lit.
DANIEL:
HE PAID SLOAN TO KILL ME.
Silence.
Dominic’s hand froze.
Isabella made a sound through the phone.
“No.”
Another message.
SLOAN TOOK BOTH PAYMENTS.
HE MOVED ME INSTEAD.
Evelyn stared.
Victor Sloan—the man everyone considered enemy later—had taken money from mother to save Daniel and father to kill him.
Then chose the larger long game.
What did he do with Daniel?
Another message.
SLOAN OWNED MY LIFE AFTER THAT.
There.
Blackmail.
Control.
Dominic typed:
WHY DID YOU WORK WITH HIM?
Response:
I DIDN’T.
I SURVIVED HIM.
That distinction mattered.
Evelyn looked at Jonah.
He looked grim.
No jokes now.
Daniel continued:
MERCER FOUND ME IN 2010.
HE BROKE SLOAN’S CONTROL.
BLACK HARBOR WAS THE LEVER.
So Mercer gave Daniel access not just as external custodian.
As protection.
Evidence against Sloan, Antonio, everyone.
2011.
Then in 2018, Daniel moved it because Victor tried again.
Dominic asked:
WHERE ARE YOU?
Long pause.
Then coordinates.
Montreal.
A church property.
Hill immediately contacted Canadian authorities.
No private Moretti extraction.
Dominic hated it.
Accepted.
Thirty minutes later, Canadian police reached the property.
Empty.
Fresh coffee.
Blood on a towel.
One laptop destroyed.
One handwritten note:
TOO LATE.
No Daniel.
Dominic stared at the report.
Hope turned to fury.
Evelyn recognized the danger.
“Do not blame the police.”
He looked at her.
“I didn’t.”
“You were about to.”
His jaw tightened.
“Maybe.”
Progress.
Then Hill received another message from 04.
Not Daniel’s style.
No questions.
Full punctuation.
Different sender.
THANK YOU FOR LOCATING HIM.
Evelyn’s stomach dropped.
The challenge had not only allowed Daniel to contact them.
It had allowed someone else to trace Daniel’s temporary access.
They had exposed him.
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
She felt guilt hit instantly.
Her decision.
Use false phrase.
Trigger 04.
“Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He stood.
“This is not yours alone.”
She stared.
“I chose to ping.”
“I agreed.”
“Hill approved.”
“Yes.”
“Jonah suggested.”
“Yes.”
“But I typed it.”
Dominic’s face softened.
“Do not become me.”
She frowned.
“What?”
“Do not make responsibility mean ownership of every consequence.”
The sentence surprised both of them.
Good.
Hill said:
“We need identify the second sender.”
Aaron analyzed timing.
The full-stop punctuation.
Relay behavior.
One detail.
The response encryption used a formatting quirk.
Double spaces after colon.
Evelyn froze.
“What?”
Aaron asked.
She knew someone who did that.
Dr. Mercer.
Old habit from typewriters.
Every research memo.
Every comment.
Colon, two spaces.
“No.”
Dominic looked.
“What?”
Evelyn pointed.
“Mercer.”
Jonah’s face changed behind glass.
“What?”
“The punctuation.”
He leaned closer.
Saw.
His expression emptied.
“That is Saul.”
Hill said:
“You think Mercer is 04.”
“No.”
Evelyn felt cold.
“I think Mercer sent the second message.”
The man Jonah said was missing.
The man Daniel said was dying.
The man whose archive was supposedly compromised.
Another message arrived.
CARTER:
YOU STILL NOTICE THE WRONG THINGS FIRST.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Only Dr. Mercer had ever said that to her.
She typed before anyone stopped her.
WHERE IS DANIEL?
Response:
SAFE IF YOU STOP LOOKING.
She felt rage.
YOU USED MY WORK.
YES.
YOU USED MY BROTHER’S CASE.
YES.
YOU PREDICTED I’D WORK FOR MORETTI.
Long pause.
Then:
NO.
Evelyn stared.
Next line:
I ARRANGED IT.
The room disappeared.
Dominic looked at her.
Evelyn’s body went cold.
Her application.
Eleven months ago.
The excellent health plan.
The open secretary role.
The recruiter who contacted her first.
Mercer had not predicted she would choose Dominic Moretti.
He had manipulated the path so she would.
Before anyone moved on the server vault, Evelyn looked at Jonah.
“You said Mercer was dying.”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“He told me.”
“When?”
“Forty-eight hours ago.”
“Where?”
“Voice call.”
“Recorded?”
“No.”
“Convenient.”
Jonah’s face hardened.
“He sounded sick.”
“That is not evidence.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“Do you believe Mercer is manipulating us?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“All of it.”
That surprised everyone.
She continued.
“That does not mean every fact is false. It means every fact is arranged.”
The distinction mattered.
Mercer had taught her that too.
Never solve the problem they handed you until you know who benefits from the solution.
She looked at the server-vault location.
“Who benefits if Dominic goes downstairs?”
Hill answered:
“Whoever wants him physically separated from this lab.”
“And if he stays?”
“Daniel may remain at risk.”
Exactly.
Choice architecture.
Mercer’s specialty.
Or Sophie Trent’s.
Or Daniel’s.
Evelyn folded her arms.
“We stop choosing between two options someone else created.”
Dominic looked at her.
“What is the third?”
“Send police to the vault. Keep you here. Open the archive further.”
Jonah smiled.
“That sounds familiar.”
She glared.
“Do not be proud.”
But the plan was good.
Police moved first.
Dominic stayed.
He hated every minute.
That mattered too.
Sometimes restraint was not calm.
May you like
It was action aimed inward.
The frightening part was not that Daniel had the key. It was that every person who touched Black Harbor seemed to believe possession gave them the right to decide who else deserved the truth.
