Chapter 8 - The Job She Thought She Chose.

Evelyn did not cry.

She became practical.

That was worse.

“Recruiter.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What?”

“The recruiter who contacted me.”

She opened her old email.

Harrison Vale Executive Search.

Recruiter:

Melissa Grant.

Phone dead.

Company website still active.

Address shared office in Midtown.

Dominic called no one until Evelyn nodded.

Good.

Hill requested records.

Within an hour:

Harrison Vale had existed for three years.

Legitimate placements.

Dozens.

But Melissa Grant did not exist under that legal name.

Payment for Evelyn’s placement fee came from Moretti Holdings.

Normal.

The recruiter’s commission later moved through another consulting company.

That company received funding from a Mercer-controlled research trust.

There.

Saul Mercer placed her.

Not directly.

Through enough layers to look ordinary.

Evelyn stared at the transaction.

“I chose this job.”

Dominic said nothing.

“I interviewed.”

“Yes.”

“I negotiated salary.”

“Yes.”

“I picked it over two others.”

“Yes.”

“But he put it in front of me.”

“Yes.”

The distinction hurt.

Agency manipulated by available options.

Not fake choice.

Not full choice.

She hated that complexity.

Jonah, now inside the lab again under Hill’s supervision, said:

“Mercer did that.”

Evelyn turned.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You worked for him.”

“Sometimes.”

“Do not say sometimes like it cleans anything.”

“It doesn’t.”

“Why would he put me here?”

Jonah looked at Dominic.

“Black Harbor.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“Why not put her somewhere else?”

“Because Moretti was the only family Mercer thought might eventually turn archive evidence outward.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Flattering.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Good.”

Jonah continued.

“Caruso would bury it. Bell would sell it. Sloan would weaponize it.”

“And Moretti?”

“He thought you were unstable.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Useful.”

“But redeemable.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Do not say that.”

“What?”

“Redeemable.”

She looked at Jonah.

“Mercer does not get to assign moral arcs to people.”

Good.

Dominic almost smiled.

Then the 04 channel activated.

MERCER:

I PLACED YOU WHERE THE ARCHIVE COULD FIND YOU IF IT NEEDED YOU.

Evelyn typed:

I AM NOT A FAILSAFE.

Response:

NO.

YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON I TRUSTED NOT TO WANT IT.

Silence.

That hurt because it sounded like praise.

Manipulative praise.

Still.

Evelyn typed:

YOU DIDN’T TRUST ME ENOUGH TO ASK.

Long pause.

Then:

TRUE.

Good.

No excuse.

Dominic watched.

Then Mercer sent:

DANIEL MORETTI IS ALIVE.

HE IS NOT SAFE.

THE 04 KEY HAS BEEN COPIED BY SOMEONE INSIDE MORETTI HOLDINGS.

Marco’s face hardened.

Again internal.

Evelyn typed:

WHO?

Response:

IF I KNEW I WOULD HAVE KILLED THE KEY.

Not person.

Key.

Interesting.

HOW DO WE FIND THEM?

Mercer answered:

OPEN 13.

Dominic.

Evelyn looked at him.

“What does open thirteen mean?”

Jonah said:

“Moretti authentication.”

Dominic frowned.

“With what?”

Mercer replied before Evelyn typed.

CARTER ASKS.

MORETTI ANSWERS.

THE ARCHIVE JUDGES CONSISTENCY.

Dominic looked offended.

“Archive judges.”

Evelyn understood.

“Behavioral key.”

“What?”

“Questions only you can answer, but not fixed answers. Mercer built a model.”

Aaron stared.

“A personality authentication system.”

“Primitive by modern standards, maybe.”

Jonah shook his head.

“Not primitive.”

Evelyn glared.

“Helpful.”

Dominic said:

“So Evelyn interrogates me.”

“Yes.”

“Wonderful.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

The archive generated the first question.

IN 2018, THREE MEN WERE HOSPITALIZED AFTER THE KINGSWAY PORT BETRAYAL.

WHY?

Dominic’s face changed.

Isabella had referenced it.

Violence.

Dominic answered:

“Because they sold route schedules to Bell.”

The system rejected.

INCOMPLETE.

He frowned.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why did you order it?”

“I just said.”

“No.”

She understood Mercer’s design.

Facts were easy to steal.

Motives harder.

“Why violence?”

Dominic stared.

“Because I wanted everyone else to be afraid.”

Silence.

Then:

ACCEPTED.

The room changed.

Dominic looked almost angry at the machine.

Next question:

DID YOU KNOW THE THIRD MAN WAS NOT INVOLVED?

Dominic froze.

Marco looked at him.

“What?”

Evelyn said nothing.

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

The room went dead.

“You knew?”

Marco whispered.

Dominic looked at the screen.

“Yes.”

“Why was he hurt?”

“Because he worked under the other two.”

Evelyn felt cold.

The system waited.

INCOMPLETE.

Dominic closed his eyes.

Then:

“Because if I spared him, people would think fear could be negotiated.”

Accepted.

Evelyn watched him.

This was not a flattering authentication.

Good.

Mercer built it against self-mythology.

Next:

DO YOU REGRET IT?

Dominic answered immediately.

“Yes.”

Rejected.

He stared.

Evelyn understood.

“Too easy.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What is true?”

His face changed.

“I regret the innocent man.”

Pause.

“I do not fully regret the fear it created.”

Accepted.

There.

Ugly truth.

Stronger than performance.

Marco looked away.

Dominic’s face was unreadable.

The questions continued.

Money.

Threats.

An informant he protected.

A nightclub owner he ruined.

A customs official he bribed.

A driver whose family he secretly paid after an accident.

Contradictions.

Not hero.

Not monster.

Pattern.

After twelve questions, MORETTI 13 authenticated.

The archive opened one layer.

Not files.

An index.

Thousands of entries.

Names.

Dates.

Organizations.

Judges.

Police.

Freight routes.

Political donations.

Criminal crews.

Federal contacts.

Then a category:

INTERNAL MORETTI — ACTIVE COMPROMISE.

Dominic leaned forward.

Three names.

SOPHIE TRENT.

MARCUS ELLIOTT.

MARCO RUIZ.

Marco stopped breathing.

His name.

Evelyn looked at him.

Dominic did not move.

Marco raised both hands.

Again.

“Open mine.”

Evelyn clicked.

Records.

Security credentials.

Payments.

Communications.

Some legitimate.

Then one transaction to Marco’s account from a consulting company linked to Victor Sloan.

$180,000.

Three months earlier.

Marco stared.

“No.”

Dominic’s face became still.

“Explain.”

“I can’t.”

“That is not useful.”

“I never received it.”

Aaron checked.

The bank account existed.

Marco Ruiz.

Same Social Security suffix.

But different bank.

Identity account.

Forgery.

Maybe.

Then internal access logs showed Marco’s credential used from HR.

Already known.

The archive had flagged him because data pointed there.

Not proof of guilt.

Good.

Sophie Trent’s file:

Systems engineer.

Credential export.

Travel to Toronto.

Payments from Sloan affiliate.

More direct.

Marcus Elliott:

HR director.

Accessed Evelyn’s file.

Approved contractor badge that Jonah cloned?

No.

Different.

He approved late-night facilities access for a company connected to Sophie Trent.

The pattern tightened.

Dominic said:

“Where is Sophie?”

Marco checked through secondary channels.

No answer.

Her apartment?

Empty.

Marcus Elliott?

At home.

Police contacted.

He answered.

Cooperating.

Claims Sophie asked him to pull Evelyn’s personnel file for “executive security review” using a request carrying Marco’s digital approval.

Forgery.

Sophie.

Likely internal compromise.

Dominic’s face hardened.

“Find her.”

Hill said:

“Police.”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

Good.

Then Black Harbor produced another alert.

SOPHIE TRENT — ACCESSING 04 NOW.

Aaron stared.

“She is online.”

Evelyn looked at Mercer’s channel.

No response.

Then the 04 holder sent:

TOO SLOW.

A location appeared.

Moretti Holdings.

Not elsewhere.

Here.

Building sublevel three.

Server vault.

Dominic stood.

Hill called building security and NYPD.

No private rush.

Evelyn looked at the index.

“Wait.”

Everyone stopped.

“What?”

“Why tell us where she is?”

Dominic understood.

“Trap.”

“Maybe.”

Marco groaned.

She almost smiled.

Then archive added:

SHE IS NOT ALONE.

A second internal identifier appeared.

D.M.

Dominic’s face drained.

Daniel Moretti.

Sublevel three.

Inside Moretti Holdings.

His supposedly dead brother had come home.

And whoever held 04 wanted Dominic to go downstairs and find him.

The 04 channel went silent after revealing sublevel three.

That bothered Evelyn more than threats would have.

Silence meant whoever held the key had either achieved the intended movement or realized the movement had failed.

She watched building-camera feeds from the federal lab.

Police entered Moretti Holdings through the loading dock.

Another team secured the lobby.

No sirens.

No dramatic breach.

Then sublevel cameras died.

Of course.

Dominic stood behind Evelyn.

Not touching.

“Can Black Harbor see internal building sensors?”

“Probably not.”

“Why?”

“Different network.”

“Probably.”

She looked back at him.

“Do not.”

He almost smiled.

Then a fire alarm triggered in Moretti Holdings.

Sublevel first.

Then floor twelve.

Then executive floor.

Hill swore.

“Evacuation.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“My people.”

Hundreds of employees.

Not soldiers.

Assistants.

Accountants.

Cleaning staff.

Night maintenance.

Dominic reached for his phone.

Stopped.

“Can I call building management?”

Evelyn stared.

“You are asking me?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I’m asking because if the network is compromised, calling internal management may expose police movement.”

Good correction.

Hill handled it through emergency services.

Evacuation began.

Nothing exploded.

No smoke initially.

Then sublevel three reported actual fire.

Small.

Electrical cabinets.

Suppression system activated.

Someone wanted the vault damaged.

Or hidden.

Police reached the corridor.

Found one person unconscious near the server door.

Male.

Mid-forties.

No identification.

Dominic saw the body-camera still and stopped breathing.

“Daniel.”

His brother.

Alive.

Bleeding from the forehead.

But alive.

No Sophie Trent.

The vault door remained locked from inside.

Then the 04 channel returned.

NOW YOU KNOW I CAN REACH BOTH BROTHERS.

Evelyn’s skin turned cold.

Whoever held Victor Sloan’s key was not Daniel.

Not Mercer?

Maybe.

Then another line:

OPEN THE ARCHIVE OR THE NEXT FIRE IS NOT ELECTRICAL.

Dominic looked at Evelyn.

This time he did not tell her what to do.

He only asked:

“What do you want?”

The question came exactly when coercion was strongest.

May you like

That was why the answer mattered.

Evelyn looked at the archive and understood the real danger. A system built to prevent one person from controlling everything had slowly become another tool people used to control one another.
